Pakistan Terrorists' New Weapon: Target Killing

The situation in Pakistan these days is similar to that of a burning inferno. All the while it seems as if an explosion is ready to occur any time somewhere or the other. Earlier it used to be human bombs now it has been replaced by target killing. This new form of terrorism seems to have two advantages for the terrorists. First and foremost it saves their own lives and secondly they succeed in creating communal and sectarian hatred. -- Shakeel Shamsi

Terrorists modus operandi was that they used to reach a locality riding on a bike kill any known personality there and speed away. After that it used to come to light that the slain person was either a member of MQM, PPP activist, a Shiiite or a Hanfi Muslim. Most interesting was that in response to this some other person in some other locality used to be killed as revenge. These heinous crimes used to be committed with such foolproof plans that police was not able to take any action.

Target killing in Pakistan is not a new thing during the 80s in General Zia’s regime, people of a particular community used to be killed. Well known Doctors and Ulema of Karachi had been targeted and killed in a big number. Another objective of such kind of target killing was to create hatred between Shias and Sunnis. Even then anti-Pakistan forces did not succeed in creating a civil war. Hundreds of people were killed and then started counter attacks of target killing by the Sunnis even then it did not turn into a civil war.

Various leaders of Sipah-e-Sahaba and Lashkar- e-Jhangwi fell prey to this target killing. So much so that even General Zia ul Haque was blown away in an airplane due to this. People of Pakistan believe that Gen. Zia was killed to avenge killing of well known religious leader Aarif ul Hussain Hussaini. One of the crew members blew Gen. Haque in the plane. Although it is said that the bomb was planted in a basket of mangoes but these things never came to light or proved because the investigating team was never able to reach to any conclusion. It is not learnt till to day as to who blew Gen Haque’s plane. Not only Gen Haque but American ambassador Arnold Raefel and Horbert M Wasim who used to look after American army posted in Pakistan were also among those killed.

People of Pakistan were very annoyed of General’s high handedness. Pakistanis used to say that General is working for the benefit of America in the name of Nizam-e- Mustafa. He had given full control of Internal and External policies of Pakistan in the hands of America.

At the end of 1980s, attention of all the warrior groups of Pakistan moved towards Afghanistan hence people of Pakistan got some days of relief.

9/11 happened in the very first year of 21st century and Muslims were blamed for this and on this point America blackmailed all the Muslim countries. Whichever country refused to align with its terror tactics against the fight against terrorism was labeled a supporter of terrorism. As far as the government of Pakistan is concerned its rulers have always been its supporters hence they could not have been against attacks on Afghanistan. They had to support America. They did it with all their might they ordered Americans to attack the Taliban living on its border. This action of the Pakistan government created a terrorist group of the people who were against the Americans. The community who used to kill people in the name of community got so mad that they started killing people without any reason or cause whatsoever. The whole of Pakistan went in a state of shock because of these human bombs killings. Targeting mosques, Hospitals, schools, Imam Baras and graveyards became a daily routine.

Now the terrorists have stopped killing in the name of particular communities. Everyone is being killed without any particular motive. Pakistan army had to take stern action against them, after this. The terror organizations that were organizing crime in the towns and cities had now to fight the army of their own country. Pakistan’s majority took a sigh of relief after the terrorists organizations started fighting against the army as they were paying all their attention towards the army. After getting defeated the terror organisations started human bomb attacks but now they have stopped bothering who is being killed. When Pakistan government alerted its security with the help of people they started target killing.

Now the situation is that the terrorists kill anybody anywhere and escape. Last couple of days back they indiscriminately fired on the journalists who used to write against terrorism at Hyderabad Press Club. Pakistan government is fully unsuccessful in controlling these kinds of target killings. The government has forbidden pillion riders on bikes but this too has not brought any result. There is not a single day when a journalist, a social worker, a religious or political activist is not killed. The situation in the cities of Pakistan is so tense and bad that one cannot organize a Tebleegh congregation, Mehfil-e-Milaad or any other such occasion without police permission. People visiting a mosque are to go through a routine check so discussing them here is useless. International Jashn-e-Murtazwee which used to be organized every year was not possible this time because of the prevailing situation in Pakistan. Many poets from India used to grace this occasion but they could not get a Visa this year.

According to reliable sources we have been made to understand that as per new policy of Pakistan government now ulema, speakers, poets etc will have to first of all, submit the C D of their speeches, poetry and lectures. Only then visas will be issued after getting their nod.

When poets from India visit Pakistan for attending any family function they get the visa easily but when they return to India, the immigration personnel there ask so many questions that they prefer taking visa for literary functions which the Pakistan government does not issue easily. Indian government has not issued any such commandments for issuing visas to the Pakistani litterateurs. Pakistan government says that Indian literary society goes to Pakistan and delivers such speeches which create community tension. There are rules in Pakistan according to which Pakistan government can send back any one from its country without giving any explanation whatsoever. It means it does not wish to make the reason of not issuing Visa public.

May be, perhaps it thinks that Indian litterateurs and celebrities can be targeted for killing and it does not wish to make target killing an international issue.
