Quran written in Saddam's blood locked in Baghdad

London: A Quran written in the blood of the late Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein over two years has been locked behind three vaulted doors in Baghdad and not been opened for three years, it was reported here.
Over a two year period in the late 1990s, a nurse had drawn 27 litres of Saddam Hussein's blood, which was used by the calligrapher to transcribe the Quran, The Guardian reported.
The vault containing the Quran is in a vast mosque in Baghdad has remained locked for the past three years.
"What is in here is priceless, worth absolutely millions of dollars," Sheikh Ahmed al-Samarrai, head of Iraq's Sunni Endowment fund, was quoted as saying.
He said: "It was wrong to do what he did, to write it in blood...It is haraam (forbidden)."
After the US-led invasion in 2003, Samarrai hid pages in his house and moved others among his relatives.
"I knew this would be much sought after and we made the decision to protect it. But to see this now is not easy. There are three keys and none of them are held in the one place. I have one, the police chief in the area has another and there is a third in another part of Baghdad. There has to be a decision of a committee to let you in," he stressed.
Saddam Hussein was hanged to death in 2006.
A year before that in 2005, the government had set up a committee to oversee the removal of symbols linked to Saddam, the media report said.
Ali al-Moussawi, a spokesman for the prime minister, Nour al-Maliki, said: "Not everything built during this regime we should remove."
"There were some sculptures however that were solely about dictatorship and control over Iraq. Some spoke to dictators and battles and they should be removed. They have ethnic and sectarian meanings.
On the Quran written in blood, Moussawi said: "We should keep this as a document for the brutality of Saddam, because he should not have done this."
"It says a lot about him. It should never be put in a museum though, because no Iraqi wants to see it. Maybe in the future it could be sent to a private museum, like memorabilia from the Hitler and Stalin regimes."

(GIN)—A video of a woman being publicly whipped in Sudan for wearing trousers has been shocking internet viewers around the world.
The woman was being punished under Sharia law for wearing pants under her Islamic clothing. In a long black dress and a headscarf, she can be seen crawling on the ground, trying to ward off the lashes by two blue-uniformed police officers in what appears to be the yard of a government building.
The Sudanese Women’s Union called the incident a “shame, disgrace and humiliation to all Sudanese women.”
About 30 women were arrested Dec. 13 protesting the incident in front of the Ministry of Justice in the capital Khartoum. The governor there said there had been a mistake in the way the victim’s punishment was carried out.
Meanwhile, Sarah Cleto Rial of Wau, Southern Sudan and director of programs at My Sister’s Keeper, a Boston-based humanitarian organization, received the Eleanor Roosevelt Human Rights Award in a ceremony in Washington, D.C.
Created by President Clinton, it was first awarded in 1998 on the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which Roosevelt championed.
In Lynn, Massachusetts, Rial cofounded the African Women’s Empowerment Group helping immigrant and refugee women achieve self-sufficiency.
Rial said: “Part of my work is the inclusion of the women’s voices in different movements, whether students, community organizing, or youth organizing.”

Four wives beat Bangladesh man to death

A man in Bangladesh who kept his four wives in the dark about his multiple marriages was beaten to death, allegedly by all of them, a media report said Wednesday.
Yunus Bepari, 46, an autorickshaw driver, went to a village fair last Monday with two wives where he was confronted by his third wife. When the women exchanged information, they found that he had a fourth wife too.
The three women learnt that Yunus fourth wife was living in another village. The three women then took him to the residence of his fourth wife at Kabirpur where the four women together beat him up mercilessly, New Age newspaper reported, quoting local villagers.
He was taken in a critical condition to Faridpur Medical College Hospital where he died.
Islamic Shariah allows a man to take up to four wives, but that should be with the consent of his existing wives, the newspaper said.

Sweden: Imams issue fatwa against terrorism

The fatwa was written by Hassan Moussa, who sits on the European Council for Fatwa and Research. The fatwa is available in Swedish and Arabic on the Islamic Association site. I will add a translation to this posting later.
A group of Swedish imams condemned on Sunday the recent suicide bombing in central Stockholm, while the Security Service has confirmed that it believes the attacker was acting alone.
A number of imams issued a fatwa calling the attack in central Stockholm on December 11th “deplorable” and “reprehensible.”
Moderate Muslims reject all forms of extremism and fundamentalist interpretations of Islamic teachings, laws and practices. Destruction, the spread of fear, terror and killings have nothing to do with Islam, the imams wrote on Sunday in the fatwa.
“Muslim institutions around the world have already written about this for a long time. In Sweden, we don’t accept terrorism and refuse violence,” Mahmoud Khalfi, the spokesman for religious affairs of the Islamic Association in Sweden (Islamiska Förbundet i Sverige), told The Local on Monday.

Only one Baghdad church is celebrating Christmas fully this year, as Iraq's Christians fear a recurrence of the recent murders of their fellow parishioners and are forced to mark the occasion in the absence of over 1,000 families that have fled.
Five Islamist extremists burst into the church of Our Lady of Salvation in Baghdad in October, murdering two priests, holding the congregation hostage and eventually killing more than 50 people. Now Amnesty International has warned of a spike in violence in the run-up to Christmas and has urged the Iraqi government to do more to protect Christians, who are now believed to number less than 500,000, about half its level of seven years ago.
Only 40 people turned up for mass at Our Lady last Sunday. They sang and chanted, a forlorn gathering of survivors, the walls around them spattered with blood and cratered by bullet-holes. The bloodied hand prints of those who failed to escape marked the door in an ante-room.

Interfax - Co-chairman of the tutorial council of the CIS Interreligious Council, president of the Civilizations Interaction Foundation, a staff-member of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences Rakhamim Emanuilov is convinced that Islamic extremism is based on colonial past.
"I believe this extremism is rooted in colonial past of humanity... May be, someone doesn't like it, but Christian civilization is now far ahead," he said on air of the Komsomolskaya Pravda radio station.
According to him, "Islamic civilization has fallen behind," but "today Muslims have money and they want to get a worthy place in the world."
However, the Orientalist further said, "we know there was a time when everything was the contrary: future Christians wore fells while culture, science and medicine flourished in the East, in Islamic world."
"And no one is to blame for it, it's a historical process," Emanuilov said.

36pc women say 'wife beating justified'

A large number of women who are the worst victims of spousal violence believe that husbands have the right to beat up their wives if they neglect their children, argue with husbands or disobey the elders, specially mothers-in-law and fathers-in-law, revealed a government survey recently.
A total of 36 percent women believe that a husband is justified in bashing his wife for any of the aforesaid reasons, but the most widely accepted reason for wife beating among women in the country is disobeying elders like mothers/fathers-in-law, according to the 5th and latest Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey (BDHS) 2007.
Again, 24 percent women believe that if a husband beats up his wife for disobeying elders is justified, followed by 22 percent who believe that arguing with husbands is justified, 18 percent for going out without telling their husbands while 16 percent for neglecting children is justified. Only nine percent of women feel that denying sex is an acceptable reason for a man to beat up his wife.

Three White Men with “Improvised Explosives,” what if they were Muslims?

We are well aware of the fact that the AlQaeda threat is overblown, or to cite Australian Intelligence, “vastly overblown.” Articles from our writers in the past have also explored the fact that the Terror threat in the West in general is very low, that actual occurrences are lower than leftist/separatist attacks.
Even when terrorism does occur discussion inevitably leads to the 800 pound gorilla in the room that no one wants to talk about; occupation. Occupation, aggressive posturing against Muslims and the rise of Islamophobia in the West correlate significantly or in part to the well spring of terrorist recruitment. They don’t attack us for our “freedom,” they attack us because we are “over there.”
The news media has worked in tandem or as unwitting stooges in the propagation of the “myth” of the number one enemy being “Islam” or “terrorism.” In doing so they generally neglect or push to the side serious stories that highlight and expose “terror plots” amongst other groups.

The Falcons: Warriors against terrorism

RIYADH: Prince Muqrin, director of intelligence, on Tuesday launched a special security unit named The Falcons under his department and said the new force would carry out its duties in a professional manner.
Speaking to reporters after the launching ceremony at the department’s institute in Muzahamiya, he highlighted the cooperation between the Interior Ministry and the country’s intelligence force.
“There is unlimited cooperation between our two forces because our aims are the same,” Prince Muqrin said.
He said the Saudi leadership wanted to induct professionalism to intelligence officers. “They should be well-equipped and well-trained to confront terrorism,” the intelligence chief said.
Prince Muqrin highlighted the experience achieved by Saudi security forces in defeating terrorists. “We have the leadership and men as well as the necessary technology to defeat any terrorist operation.”

Show 'zero tolerance' to Islam-smearer: Bangladesh PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday categorically said the present government would show zero tolerance to those who are smearing the name of Islam, the religion of peace.
The government will continue its drive against terrorism and extremism in the country, she said.
She called upon the Olama-Mashayekh (religious scholars) to keep vigil so that none could engage in destructive activities using the name of Islam.
Hasina made the call while addressing the prize and certificate distribution ceremony of National Children and Juvenile Cultural Competition of Bangladesh Islamic Foundation at Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC).
State Minister for Religious Affairs advocate Md Shahjahan Miah presided over the function organised by the Islamic Foundation.

ABU DHABI - Visitors of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque say that Abu Dhabi, the UAE’s capital, is considered to be the symbol of tolerance and fraternity between religions and the respect for different values, faiths and cultures. The visitors highlighted the leading role assumed by the state, under the leadership of His Highness President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, may God protect him, in strengthening the values of inter-faith co-existence. This is besides the adherence to the constants of the true religion of Islam to spread peace and security across the region and the world, and the opening of channels of dialogue with people of different faiths to push dialogue between peoples forward.
This was revealed by an opinion poll conducted by the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre in Abu Dhabi which involved a random sample of 500 mosque visitors from twenty countries who represented various categories and age groups.

Keep pushing against the blasphemy laws

On November 25, 2010, Pakistan People’s Party MNA Sherry Rehman, submitted a bill to the National Assembly seeking amendments to the Blasphemy laws. Since then, the Islamist parties of Pakistan have been in a tizzy. Aside from the announcement of two major rallies – one on December 31 and the other on January 8 – we see that the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) or the ‘top Islamic body’ of Pakistan as it is known has a response to Rehman’s bill.
I admit that I am wary of the Council. My skepticism stems from their reaction to what could have been a great achievement, the Domestic Violence (Prevention and Protection) Bill. Many claim that the legislature has not been implemented primarily due to the obstacles created by the CII. The Council labeled the bill as ‘discriminatory,’ argued that it would allow police to violate the ‘sanctity of the home,’ and also lead to higher divorce rates. What it would have done is broadened the definition of abuse, and created protection committees providing legal care and medical facilities to victims of abuse. These are just a couple of the positive changes the bill would have brought.

Truckloads of Pak onions to the rescue of Indian curry

AMRITSAR: Delhi and other northern states are getting help from Pakistan to bring the zing back to their curries with about 350 tonnes of onions landing at Attari border on Tuesday. Pakistani onions are priced at Rs 19 per kg but there is no predicting their retail prices.
On Monday evening, 14 trucks carrying at least 140 tonnes of the pungent tuber from Pakistan crossed over to India. Though the landed cost of onions, after paying import and customs duty, comes to Rs 20/kg, the benefit is yet to be pass on to customers even in Amritsar a few kilometers from the border.
Deputy commissioner land custom station Attari, RK Duggal told TOI that at least 35 more truckloads of onions crossed over on Tuesday.

The FBI arrested Mohamed Osman Mohamud, a 19—year—old Somali—born American, for plotting to detonate a bomb as thousands of people attended the lighting of the Christmas tree in the centre of Portland, Oregon. It is thought he was inspired by al-Awlaki.

The discovery of an al-Qaeda ink cartridge bomb at East Midlands airport was described as the "most sophisticated" device seen for a decade. The bomb was masterminded by Ibrahim Hassan al-Asiri, a Saudi fanatic who fled to Yemen in 2008 and is in touch with Anwar al-Awlaki.

Al-Awlaki, who is in hiding in Yemen, is regarded by the CIA and MI6 as the driving force behind the transformation of AQAP from a regional group into an international terrorist organisation. Two attacks launched this year against the British Embassy in Yemen showed AQAP's continued ability to strike at will at key targets. In April, an al-Qaeda suicide bomber almost succeeded in killing Tim Torlot, Britain's ambassador to Yemen. In October Fiona Gibb, the deputy chief of the UK's embassy, also had a lucky escape when the convoy escorting her to the embassy compound came under attack.

NEW DELHI: Perhaps aware that Moscow's increasing security cooperation with Pakistan is not going down well with India, Russia on Tuesday called upon Pakistan to expeditiously bring all "perpetrators, authors and accomplices" of the Mumbai attacks to justice. Coming down heavily on Pakistan, the joint statement issued after PM Manmohan Singh's meeting with President Dmitry Medvedev said "states that aid, abet or shelter terrorists are as guilty of acts of terrorism as their actual perpetrators'.
"I believe that no modern civilized state can hide terrorists as law-abiding citizens and cannot proceed on the assumption that they will change," Medvedev said at a press interaction, calling for international cooperation to facilitate "an extradition process" against terrorists.

US commanders pushing to expand raids inside Pakistan

Growing frustration with Pakistani response to take on terrorists ensconced in its safe havens, US military commanders in Afghanistan are pushing for expanded ground raids across the border in Pakistan’s tribal areas.
The proposal seeks to escalate military activities inside Pakistan, where the movement of American forces has been largely prohibited because of fears of provoking a backlash, The New York Times reported on Tuesday.
“The plan has not yet been approved, but military and political leaders say a renewed sense of urgency has taken hold, as the deadline approaches for the Obama administration to begin withdrawing its forces from Afghanistan,” the report said.
Under the plan, US officers were said to be drawing up plans to begin ground operations to capture or kill leaders from the Taliban and the Haqqani network. Although the handful of American forays across the border into Pakistan have infuriated Islamabad, US military officers are said to be making the case for a shift in policy that would for more routine incursions. For the large part, the US operations in Pakistan have been confined to aerial attacks by CIA’s drones.

Rahul unaware of Indian history: RSS

NEW DELHI: Expressing shock over Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's remarks that radicalised Hindu groups could pose a "bigger threat" to India than the LeT, RSS said the statement indicated his lack of understanding of Indian history.
"The remarks of the Congress general secretary prove that he is totally unaware of the history of Hindutva as well as the concept of nationalism," Sangh mouthpiece 'Panchjanya' said in its editorial titled 'Think before you speak Rahul'.
"Will the Congress, which considers Rahul Gandhi as its future and the future Prime Minister, be able to protect its very base by relying on his ignorance. The electorate of Bihar has already given its reply," it said.
Such statements would not only weaken the nation's fight against "jehadi terrorism" but also encourage it.

Saudi Arabia's endeavors to solve Muslim issues lauded

MADINAH: Having donated over $1 billion to the Islamic Development Bank’s Poverty Reduction Fund, Saudi Arabia was at the top of a 2008 list of countries that offered the highest amount of voluntary and unconditional assistance for relief and humanitarian operations.
This was disclosed at the end of the three-day First World Conference on Saudi Arabia's Efforts to Solve Muslim Issues that ended on Tuesday in Madinah. The event, which was attended by over 100 researchers from 35 countries, was jointly organized by the Islamic University in Madinah and the King Foundation for Research and Archives in Riyadh.
It was also announced at the conference that the Kingdom has also generously contributed to the budgets of 18 international financing institutions and given more than $100 billion over the past three decades to about 95 countries. “This amounts to about four percent of the Kingdom's gross national product,” it added.

Jordanians translate WikiLeaks into Arabic

AMMAN: Two Jordanian websites have begun translating into Arabic the US State Department cables pertaining to Jordan released by WikiLeaks.
The sites, AmmanNet.net and 7iber.com, said Tuesday that they wanted to inform Jordanians and Arabs about the secret cables by “removing the language barrier” and called on experienced translators to help with the material.
One cable cites Jordanian officials expressing concern that any war between the US and Iran would only weaken the Arab moderates without ending Tehran’s support for terrorism or its controversial nuclear program.
AmmanNet website manager Mohammad Ersan urged for the creation of a “Jordanian Wikileaks” where citizens would publish important documents.

UK trained Rab: WikiLeaks

The British government trained members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), The Guardian reported Tuesday quoting leaked US embassy cables and strongly criticising the UK role.
Pointing out that the Rab has earned bad reputations like a name 'government death squad', as given by Human Rights Watch (HRW), for their involvement in 'extra-judicial killings', The Guardian report said that British officials trained Rab men in 'investigative interviewing techniques' and 'rules of engagement'.
One cable makes clear that the US would not offer any assistance other than human rights training to the Rab – and that it would be illegal under US law to do so – because its members commit gross human rights violations with impunity, the Guardian report said.
A harsh criticism of the UK government for training the Rab men, the Guardian report headlined "WikiLeaks cables: Bangladeshi 'death squad' trained by UK government" pointed out that Rab has been held responsible for hundreds of extra-judicial killings in recent years and is said to routinely use torture.

Here’s an update for those of you who were worried about the health and wellbeing of Mohamed Mohamud, the young Muslim who recently tried to commit mass-murder in the name of Islamic jihad by blowing up thousands of Infidels at the city Christmas tree-lighting ceremony in Portland, Ore.
Mohamud is in protective custody, separated from the rest of the prison population and supplied with a copy of the Koran, so that he can while away the hours in safety, fortifying his mind and heart with pious thoughts.
According to The Oregonian, Chief Deputy Michael Shults of the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office explained that Mohamud was being held in protective custody – having a cell to himself and eating his meals alone – because many of his fellow inmates in Portland’s Justice Center jail had friends or relatives at the tree lighting, although "there's no known threat . . . no known persons . . . in our system that [are] actively trying to harm him."

US braces for Qaeda plot to poison food in restaurants

A year after the abortive Christmas Day attempt to detonate a jetliner over Detroit, the US authorities are bracing for a new Al Qaeda plot by launching simultaneous poison attacks in hotels and restaurants at many locations over a single weekend.
The Department of Homeland Security has uncovered a plot that is said to involve the use of two poisons — ricin and cyanide — slipped into salad bars and buffets, CBS News reported as Americans prepare for the upcoming Christmas and New Year’s Eve celebrations.
Simultaneously, a new report from the Congressional Research Service (CRS) points to a spike in terror plots involving home-grown radicals over the last year and a half — as many as 22 uncovered plots.
In preparation for the holiday season, New York law enforcement authorities have simulated yet another and decidedly more elaborate Mumbai-type terror attack to test the city’s preparedness for a coordinated terror onslaught.

Rape victims fear being jailed in Mauritania

Nouakchott, Mauritania (CNN) -- Mahjouba was raped in March on the nighttime streets of Mauritania's capital, but she will not bring charges against the man she says did it since she may be the one who ends up in prison. The 25-year-old says the legal advice she received was to not go to court, leaving her to suffer in silence.
There is no law in Mauritania that defines rape.
According to a local U.N.-funded group working with the victims, the law criminalizes the women instead of their rapists -- and society ostracizes the women.
Mahjouba, who asked not to use her real name, said: "I am sure that if I raise my voice I'm going to be criminalized by my society and I will pay the price harshly ... and as a result I may stay single for the rest of my life."
She added: "I consulted a lawyer secretly, and he advised me sincerely not to seek justice because that would throw me in jail. I know what happened to other girls who decided to go to court and face the community. Their lives were destroyed completely forever. So I already know what would happen to me if I had to follow that path.

Dr Aafia’s attorney dissatisfied with US justice system

LAHORE: The attorney of Dr Aafia Siddiqui’s family and executive director of the International Justice Network, Tina Monshipour Foster, has said that she is dissatisfied by the American justice system, especially after the court’s decision on Dr Aafia’s case.
Foster, who is not directly representing Dr Aafia in the case but works as her family lawyer, was addressing a press conference along with some activists of Jamaat-e-Islami, including Pasbaan President Altaf Shakoor, spokesman Farooq Chohan, Dr Fauzia Siddiqui and IJN researcher Sara Hooward at the Lahore Press Club on Tuesday. Foster is founder of the IJN and serves as the lead counsel in several cases on behalf of detainees picked up by the US army and law enforcement agencies, mostly on the charges of terrorism from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq and Yemen.
Her organisation is defending a number of significant al Qaeda suspects, including Fadi al Maqaleh from Yemen, Amin al Bakri from Yemen, Haji Wazir from Afghanistan, Redha al Najar from Tunisia, Jan Sher Khan and Amanatullah from Pakistan.

Netanyahu to make formal request for convicted spy's release

Jerusalem (CNN) -- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday agreed to formally request the release of convicted U.S. spy Jonathan Pollard.
This comes a day after Netanyahu received a hand-delivered letter pleading for help from Pollard, a former U.S. Navy intelligence analyst who was caught spying for Israel in 1985 and was sentenced in 1987 to life imprisonment.
He has already served 25 years of his sentence.
"Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu today decided to accede to Jonathan Pollard's personal request and will, in the coming days, officially and publicly appeal to U.S. President Barack Obama regarding Pollard's release," the prime minister's statement said.
The decision to accede to the request was made following a series of talks and contacts that Netanyahu and his representatives have held on the issue in recent months with senior U.S. administration officials

Booming Beirut struggles to save its past

(CNN) -- Beirut has long been proud of its reputation for beautiful people, nightlife and beaches but, as the city re-emerges as a cosmopolitan capital, the furor that has erupted over its architecture is distinctly ugly.
After putting years of conflict behind it, the Mediterranean city is enjoying something of a renaissance, recapturing the pre-war glory days that once saw it named the "Paris of the Middle East."
This reawakened popularity has contributed to soaring property prices, prompting developers to reach for the sky with dozens of new skyscrapers containing apartments, office blocks and hotels.
Though great for Beirut's economy -- Lebanon's Central Bank says the property sector is worth $10 billion a year -- the construction boom has come at a price: the destruction of much of the city's ancient heritage.
With legislation aimed at preserving Beirut's architectural heritage making faltering progress through the parliament, according to pressure groups, they say it has fallen to them to try to preserve what remains.

Syria’s Assad says West moving away from Turkey

BERLIN: Turkey is playing an increasingly important role for regional stability as Western powers distance themselves from the emerging nation, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said in a newspaper on Tuesday.
Asked if he felt Turkey was moving away from the West, NATO and the United States in favour of Muslim countries, Assad told Germany’s mass-selling Bild daily that he felt the responsibility lay elsewhere.
“I’d say rather that the West is moving away from Turkey,” he said in an interview.
Western powers are somewhat concerned that Turkey is growing closer to fellow Muslim neighbours like Iran and Syria, although Ankara sees its role as a stabilising force in the region.

It was later moved to Gaza City’s main square where members of the public, many of whom have never seen the real thing, have been posing for photos. University student Rima al-Wadeya, 20, who had just had her picture taken by a friend, said she had never been to Jerusalem which is less than two hours away by car. Others said they visited decades ago, before violence erupted in late 1980s. “Getting to Jerusalem is like an impossible dream ... so we are taking a picture, trying to fool ourselves,” Wadeya said. Obama weighs review process for Guantanamo detainees

WASHINGTON: The Obama administration is considering the creation of a review process for Guantanamo Bay detainees who are deemed too dangerous to be released but who cannot be tried in either civilian or military courts.
An administration official confirmed that an executive order had been drafted that would establish “periodic reviews” for prolonged detentions. But the official said the order had not yet gone to President Barack Obama.
The order may be greeted warily by human rights groups.
While the administration sees the process as a way to provide clear standards for cases of indefinite detentions, many rights groups oppose any formalization of such detentions.
The Washington Post, which first reported that the draft order was under consideration, said it would create a system that would allow detainees and their lawyers to challenge incarcerations, possibly every year.

US, UN welcome formation of new Iraqi government

Washington/United Nations : The US and UN on Wednesday welcomed formation of a new government in Iraq saying it reflects the resolve of Iraqi people to thwart extremist designs and settle differences through open exchange of ideas.
"We encourage its (Iraq's) leaders to continue to pursue a federal, democratic, pluralistic and unified Iraq based on the rule of law and respect for human rights," UN Security Council said in a statement.
UNSC said this decision reflects the will of the Iraqi people as displayed by the parliamentary election of March 7, 2010.
US President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden each spoke to Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki to congratulate him on the formation of an inclusive government of national partnership that reflects the results of the national election.

Morarji had told US he would act if Pak exploded a nuke bomb

WASHINGTON: Refusing to enter into any formal agreement with Pakistan on non-use and non-development of nuclear weapons, the then Prime Minister Morarji Desai had told the US in 1979 that if Islamabad exploded a nuclear bomb, he would act to "smash it," a declassified US memo shows.
The conversation that transpired between Desai and the then US ambassador to India Robert F Goheen in a one-on-one meeting in June 1979 have been made public as part of a series of declassified documents yesterday.
The meeting with Desai that lasted for about 55 minutes was held at the instance of Goheen who was following the direction of the National Security Council of White House to meet the Prime Minister on an "informal, exploratory and non-committal" basis.
Starting with the premise that Washington wanted to work with New Delhi to "deflect" the Pakistani nuclear threat, Goheen could get across the idea that "India is an essential part of any solution".

AFTER acting against youth for their Facebook postings through summer, the police in Kashmir have for the first time arrested a schoolboy shown beating a policeman in a video on popular website Yo uTube.
The boy, a Class XII student, has been charged with attempt to murder, abduction and snatching of weapon. “We identified the boy on Yo uTube and later arrested him,”
Superintendent of Police, North Srinagar, Showkat Sarwar told The Indian Express. He has been identified as Shadab Hashmi of the downtown locality of Rajouri Kadal.
The specific video has been on sites like YouTube and Facebook since summer and has become, in a sense, an archetypal image of the unprecedented summer protests in the valley. It was also picked up and played on national news television channels for days.

Beleaguered mosque leader quits

An Islamic religious leader accused of preaching jihad – holy war – in a South Auckland mosque will leave New Zealand today, his supporters say.
Imam or mufti Abdul Qadir Siddiquei was said to have preached jihad against members of other Islamic sects at the country's biggest mosque, Auckland's 1000-member Jamia Musjid Al-Mustafa.
The mufti's supporters have struck back at the allegations, saying they were spread by a "disgruntled ex-member who was banned from the mosque because of his controversial beliefs".
South Auckland Muslim Association president Mohammed Hasim Khan said his organisation "vehemently refutes the allegations against Mufti Siddiquei".
Mr Khan said the mufti, who was "pretty upset", had tendered his resignation on December 11 to be with his sick mother in Pakistan.

Hizbul militant gets 10-year RI

GHAZIABAD: A Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist was sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for 10 years by a fast track court here on Tuesday for attempting to set off explosions in the city.
Additional District and Sessions judge Mukesh Singhal, while awarding the sentence to Fayaz, 21, called him a “threat to society.”
The Uttar Pradesh police arrested him, on August 12, 2008, near the Ghaziabad railway station with explosives and firearms. The prosecution said Fayaz, a Srinagar resident, was wanted in several bomb blast cases in Kashmir. The judge said he awarded a 10-year term in the hope that the youth would reform in future.

3 Pakistan choppers violate Indian airspace

Jammu: Three Pakistani military helicopters reportedly violated Indian airspace over the R.S. Pura sector in Jammu on Tuesday.
Official sources said that the helicopters flew very low over the Abdulliyan post between 1 p.m. and 1.30 p.m. before making a turn towards Sialkot.
Preliminary reports only said that three military aircraft had entered Indian airspace.
Of the 29 instances in which Indian airspace has been violated in last three years, Pakistani aircrafts have been involved 23 times, Union Defence Minister A.K. Antony said in Parliament recently.
Mr. Antony said that between 2007 and 2010, Indian airspace had been violated 29 times — 23 times by Pakistan, once by Bangladesh, thrice by China, and twice by the United States.

Iraq gets a new government after nine-month delay

DUBAI: Iraq's Parliament, after a delay of nine months, has confirmed Nouri al-Maliki as Prime Minister for a second term.
The formation of Mr. Maliki's national unity government has been an exercise in balancing the competing interests of Iraq's Sunni, Shia and Kurdish power blocs.
Ayad Allawi, the leader of the Iraqiya party that won 91 seats — two more than the Mr. Maliki's State of the Law coalition but was unable to form a government — has been appointed as the head of the national council for strategic studies, a newly created post.
Another prominent Iraqiya member, Rafie al-Esawi, has been appointed as the Finance Minister. The Iraqiya party had won heavily in Sunni-dominated areas and Mr. Esawi is also a Sunni.

Pakistan unfazed over U.S. “raid plan”

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Tuesday remained outwardly unfazed by a New York Times report suggesting senior American military commanders in Afghanistan were pushing for an expansion of Special Operations ground raids across the border into Pakistan's tribal areas.
Without commenting on the veracity of the report, Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit said: “The U.S. knows our position and redlines. We do not expect the U.S. to complicate matters involving counter-terrorism.” Maintaining that Pakistani security forces were capable of handling terrorists and militants, he said, “There is no question of allowing foreign troops inside Pakistan”.
As for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan trying to extend its operations to Pakistan, Mr. Basit said it had no such mandate. “We will not accept violation of our sovereignty.”

Pakistan test-fires nuclear-capable Ghauri missile

Pakistan on Tuesday test fired the nuclear-capable Ghauri ballistic missile with a range of 1,300 km that can hit targets in India, with Premier Yousuf Raza Gilani saying the launch demonstrated that the country’s defence capability is “impregnable”.
The Strategic Missile Group of the Pakistani army’s Strategic Force Command conducted the test to mark the conclusion of a field training exercise aimed at testing the operational readiness of the formation that controls the nuclear-capable missiles.
A military spokesman said the test was successful.
The Ghauri or Hatf-V is a “liquid fuel missile which can carry both conventional and nuclear warheads over a distance of 1,300 km,” the spokesman said. The military did not say where the missile was test fired.

Pak army will remain in Swat region: Kayani

Pakistan Army chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani on Tuesday said the force will remain in the restive Swat region until people’s confidence is restored as peace had been restored in the area after a lot of sacrifices and bloodshed.
Kayani made the remarks while addressing the earth-breaking ceremony for a bridge near Barikot in Swat, a district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province. Youths affected by the militancy and found involved in militant activities of a petty nature will be sent back to their homes as they have been trained at a rehabilitation institute and will prove to be good citizens in the days to come, Kayani said.
The army chief individually met the youths trained at the institute run by Pakistan Army for the “mental rehabilitation” of persons affected by the Taliban insurgency in Swat.
He expressed the confidence that 46 students who had been trained in different trades at the Rastoon Institute will become good citizens and the bread-winners of their families.

Kashmir Interlocutors apologise for goof-up

The three-member team of interlocutors headed by Dileep Padgaonkar apologised on Tuesday for the “goof-up” due to which they could not meet Jammu-based leaders of the BJP and Panthers Party in Jammu on Monday.
The leaders of the two main Opposition parties had taken serious note of the misconduct on the part of interlocutors and had also lodged a strong protest for the shabby treatment meted out to them.
Before leaving for Srinagar, the interlocutors formally apologised to the leaders. “It was indeed a goof-up and it should not have happened. We are apologetic,” Radha Kumar in the presence of team members Padgaonkar and MM Ansari said.

IT’S NOT easy to persuade Pervez Musharraf to appear for an interview. Unless the former Pakistan President is plied with Chivas Regal whiskey and Cuban cigars, that is.
This is what the makers of an acclaimed documentary on slain Pakistani leader Benazir Bhutto claim they had to do, to get Musharraf to do a short interview for their film.
The goodies were delivered to his hotel suite in Philadelphia when Musharraf was on a lecture tour of the US, Duane Baughman and Mark Siegel, the director and producer of the film respectively, wrote in an article for Foreign Policy . “ We asked him some tough questions. His appearance provoked a surprise visit from his son Bilal the following year at the Sundance Film Festival,” the duo wrote. Bilal, who lives in the US, accused the filmmakers of defaming his father.
The documentary Bhutto is currently playing in US theatres. It was released in Pakistan this year.
“ We suggested to Musharraf that more than the film, it was history that takes a dim view of dictators,” the filmmakers wrote.

'Coatings illegally exported to Pak nuke reactors'

WASHINGTON: A Chinese subsidiary of an American company has pleaded guilty of having illegally exported high performance coatings to an under-construction nuclear reactor in Pakistan, the US Justice Department has said.
The case's combined USD 3.75 million in criminal and civil fines represent one of the largest monetary penalties for export violations in the history of the US Department of Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security.
The guilty plea stemmed from actions by the Shanghai-based PPG Paints Trading that caused illegal export, re-export and/or transshipment of high-performance coatings from the US to 'Chashma 2' nuclear power plant in Pakistan, via a third-party distributor in China.
PPG Paints Trading entered the guilty plea yesterday morning and was sentenced in the afternoon in accordance with the terms of the plea agreement by the Judge Rosemary M Collyer in the US District Court for the District of Columbia.
Under the terms of the related civil settlements, PPG Industries and PPG Paints Trading agreed to pay civil penalties of USD 750,000 and USD 1 million respectively.

Cracks widen in Pakistan's ruling coalition, key ally quits

ISLAMABAD: The cracks within the ruling coalition in Pakistan widened Tuesday after a key ally made it clear that it had "no intention of returning to the (coalition) fold".
Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani last week sacked minister for science and technology Azam Swati, who was a cabinet member from Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F). This enraged JUI-F chief Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman. He not only decided to withdraw his party's support to the government, but also submitted resignations of four other ministers of the party.
Although Fazl-ur-Rehman has decided against resigning from the chairmanship of the Kashmir committee and council of Islamic ideology, which is giving the central government hopes of his return, he has made it clear that "he has no intention of returning to the (coalition) fold".
The party has also sought from the speaker allotment of opposition benches for its members in parliament.

The revelation by the Daily Mail throws new light on Assange's formative teenage years.

Parcel bomb found on Rome metro train: Official

ROME: A parcel bomb was on Tuesday found hidden inside a shoe box in a train carriage in Rome's metro system after passengers had got off at the train's last stop, officials said.
The device, which contained gunpowder and metal tubing, was found by a transport worker at around 10:00am (0900 GMT) at Rebibbia station on the outskirts of the Italian capital.
"It appears the device could not have exploded," Rome's mayor, Gianni Alemanno, told reporters, contradicting city council spokesman Giampaolo Polizzaro who earlier told AFP it had been "ready to explode."
"It seems it could have been activated by remote control because it had something that looked like an antenna," Polizzaro said earlier.
The website of the Corriere della Sera daily quoted a police source saying it could have been a pipe bomb.

Swedish police "bamboozled" women to file sex case: Assange

LONDON: WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, fighting a Swedish extradition warrant, on Tuesday said he fears that he would not get "natural justice" in Sweden where the police "bamboozled" two women to accuse him of sexual assault.
The 39-year-old Australian is currently free on bail in the UK while facing the extradition proceedings to Sweden.
Sweden wants Britain to extradite Assange to face questioning over allegations from two Swedish women that he raped one of them and sexually assaulted the other in Stockholm in August this year.
But Assange said the Swedish women who have accused him of sexual assault had got into a "tizzy" about the possibility they had caught a sexually transmitted disease from him.
He insisted he was fighting a Swedish extradition warrant because he believes "no natural justice" would occur in Sweden. "I don't need to go back to Sweden," Assange told the BBC.
"The law says I... have certain rights, and these rights mean that I do not need to speak to random prosecutors around the world who simply want to have a chat, and won't do it in any other standard way."

Prithvi-II ballistic missile successfully test-fired

BALASORE: India today successfully test-fired indigenously developed and nuclear-capable Prithvi-II ballistic missile, which has a striking range of 350 km, from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur off the Orissa coast.
"The missile mounted on a mobile launcher was test-fired from the launch complex-3 in the ITR at around 0815 hours", defence sources said.
The test-firing of the missile, which has already been inducted into the armed forces, was successful, the sources said, adding it was a routine trial conducted by the personnel of strategic force command (SFC).
