Jul 15, 2010 NEW YORK: The US-led forces fighting the Taliban fighters in Afghanistan might soon encounter 'gun-toting' monkeys, trained for 'jihad', if a rumour doing the rounds in the Chinese media is to be believed. NATO officials and military experts have scoffed at the report originating in the Chinese media, which says that the Taliban are training monkeys to fight the US-led military. The New York Post cited the state-run People's Daily as saying that the Taliban is "training monkeys to use weapons to attack American troops". "... the Taliban forces have tried any possible means and figured out a method to train monkeys as 'replacement killers' against American troops," Stars and Stripes quoted the Chinese daily as saying. The militants were arming the primates with AK-47 rifles, machine guns and trench mortars in the Waziristan tribal region bordering Pakistan and Afghanistan, it claimed. The monkeys soldiers are being turned into snipers at a secret Taliban training base and are in turn being rewarded with 'bananas and peanuts'. "We have absolutely nothing that leads us to believe that this tale could be even remotely based in reality," said NATO spokesman Lt Col Todd Breasseale when asked to react on the report. Christopher Coe, director of the Harlow Primate Laboratory at the University of Wisconsin, questioned the authenticity of the pictures that were carried with the report, showing a primate grinning next to a machine gun. "To my eye at least, it is a baboon, which lives in Africa," Coe said. "The more common monkey that lives in that part of the world is a rhesus monkey. They live in India and can also be found in China. But this photo is not of a rhesus monkey". Coe said the noise of weapon fire would certainly scare most animals. "While you could train a monkey to shoot a gun, I certainly wouldn't want to be anywhere in the neighbourhood after that. The brazen assaults included the killing of three British troops by a rogue Afghan soldier, an incident that has underscored concerns over efforts to build up the local army, a cornerstone of the US-led war strategy. Of the 12 dead, four were British troops and eight American. "We're in the toughest part of this fight," German army general Josef Blotz, a spokesman for NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), told reporters. Four US soldiers were killed in a Taliban-style bombing and a fifth by small-arms fire in the volatile south on Wednesday, an ISAF spokeswoman said. Late Tuesday, Taliban insurgents had set off a car bomb, then fired rockets and small arms into a police base in the southern province of Kandahar, killing three US soldiers and five Afghan civilians. Afghan police backed by international forces fought back "and prevented insurgents from penetrating the compound perimeter," ISAF said. Zalmai Ayoubi, a spokesman for the Kandahar government, told AFP the car bomb was set off by a suicide bomber, adding that several other insurgents attacked the base with rockets and machine-gun fire for more than 20 minutes. In a statement monitored by the SITE intelligence service, the Taliban claimed that 43 NATO and Afghan soldiers were killed in a five-man suicide raid on a police compound in Kandahar Tuesday. The Taliban, who have been known to exaggerate reports of battlefield success, made the claim in a communique quoting spokesman Muhammad Yusuf and posted on its website and jihadist forums. Separately, the Afghan interior ministry said another nine civilians were killed in the neighbouring province of Helmand on Tuesday when the minivan they were travelling in hit a roadside bomb -- the Taliban's weapon of choice. Insurgents had killed more than 160 Afghan civilians since June 1, Blotz said. At least 365 NATO soldiers have also died in the conflict so far this year, compared with 521 for all of 2009. On Tuesday, a renegade soldier killed three members of a British Gurkha battalion on a base in Helmand, one of the most violent parts of the country. A British major commanding the company was among the dead, killed as he slept in the base, London's Ministry of Defence said in a statement. The Afghan soldier who carried out the attack is still on the run. President Hamid Karzai and the Afghan army chief have vowed a full investigation into the shooting. Britain, the main US ally in the war against the Taliban, said it would not alter its strategy in working with local forces, which is key in enabling them to take over security and allow for an eventual exit for US-led troops. US General David Petraeus, who assumed command of NATO troops this month, said it was vital to ensure that the trust between Afghan and international forces "remains solid in order to defeat our common enemies". Officials of NATO's Training Mission-Afghanistan -- costing more than 10 billion dollars, mostly from US coffers -- say they aimed to recruit and train 171,000 soldiers and 134,000 police officers. Current figures are around 115,000 in the army and 104,000 in the police. Illiteracy, desertion and drug addiction are widespread problems. There have been fears that as the war loses ground with the Western public, pressure to reach quotas will override quality. Britain has around 10,000 soldiers in Afghanistan and Prime Minister David Cameron has signalled he would like to see combat troops withdraw within five years. The summer vacation has just started and will last for two months, including Ramadan. For those two months young men are likely to have nothing on their agenda that could be classed as fun. “I used to look forward to summer vacations when I was little as I used to go out with my family and have lots of fun activities but I have outgrown them now,” said high school student Abdullah Madani.  “I no longer find playing at the arcades or even riding my bicycle in my backyard as fun now that I’m older. I want to be involved in something more masculine with my male friends.” He added that any activities he does with his friends are often met with disapproval from people around him, even if they are harmless. “We need a place to have fun, where we can spend hours not worrying about what families and fathers would think of us,” he added. Malls in Saudi Arabia are perceived as for families only. Men usually cannot enter without the company of a woman, making it difficult for them to shop. “I was once told by a religious policeman that shopping was perverted and I should be ashamed for asking them to be let in a mall,” said resident Jameel Saleh. “He also told me to let my wife or mother do it for me because shopping is for women only and I should behave like a man.” Security guards at shopping malls think it is unfair to bar men from going to shopping centers. “I sometimes sneak in some men early in the morning so they can buy what they need from the shops because this is ridiculous,” said a security man at one of Jeddah’s shopping centers. “Authorities say that men who go inside malls are troublemakers and that’s why they want to stop them from entering in the first place. But that’s the reason we are around, so we can stop trouble from happening. But these are the rules and I cannot do anything about them.” According to another citizen, Omar Najjar, Saudi men need to have enough money to own their own beach house or private house so they can invite friends over, otherwise they are forced to roam the streets and do nothing. “My friends and I hang out at coffee shops to play cards or play video games and even that costs a lot of money. By the end of summer I find myself paying around SR5,000 and I did not even have fun,” he said. “Young men need something more, as our lives have turned into a daily routine that we spend inside the Kingdom. On vacations, it’s like we’re excited that school is over but then we realize that when we were in school we had something to keep us busy. During vacations we’re just bored.” Parking lots are packed with men who hang out and chat, often annoying families. “My friends and I tried a couple of times to just hang out by the beach and enjoy the view, getting a small carpet to sit on and play cards,” said high school student Mohammed Taher. “But every time we go there a religious cop comes and asks us to leave, claiming that we are bothering the families around us. That’s why we then shifted to malls and public parking lots because there are not many families around. Even then they think we are annoying them. “What do you expect us to do? Where do you want us to go? It’s like they are saying if guys are gathering together then they are up to no good.” It appears sport is the only activity that Saudi men can enjoy without being bothered by families or policemen. “All I do on my off days is go to the gym and play football with my friends. Other than that I have nothing to do. I just spend hours playing games and lifting weights so I can pass time and then go home to get some rest and do the exact same thing the next day,” said college student Ahmed Zaki. “I tried jogging in a public place, but people started staring at me as if to say I had an ulterior motive for being there. I really did not want to flirt or bother the ladies who were walking around. Speaking on the topic ‘Promotion of compassionate communities through interfaith participation’ , the religious leaders discussed how people belonging to different religions could resolve their differences that weaken communities. Director of the office for Interfaith and Community Alliance of Islamic Society of North America Dr Syed M Sayeed said that the American Muslims could become achievers only by becoming socially active and having dialogue with people of other religions on common grounds.  The idea of strengthening the Muslim community has been derived from pluralistic democracy. We derive strength from the people of other religions who have been carrying on this struggle for centuries. He said he was especially grateful to Allah who provided this unique opportunity to establish fraternity and unity with the people of Abrahamic religions. The series of interfaith dialogue and participation had been going on since the last decade thanks to which I now believe that all the human beings are the creation of one omnipotent God, he said. ------ War crimes trial should follow due judicial process: UK minister Jul 14, 2010  The British minister of state for international development, Alan Duncan, has observed that the trial of 1971 war criminals should be conducted acting on rule of law and applying due judicial process, and not by political means. ‘It must be a judicial process and not be a political one,’ he told a pre-departure press conference at Lake Shore Hotel. However, the British minister appreciated the move for holding trial even after 40 years as the issue runs high in Bangladesh. About the opposition BNP’s current abstention from parliament, Alan Duncan who met the prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, and the leader of the opposition, Khaleda Zia, said he was a strong believer in parliamentary politics. The two members of the militant outfit’s top decision making body, the ‘majlish-e-shura’ members Salahuddin alias Salehin, 37 and Assaduzzaman Ponir, 27, were produced in Dhaka’s Speedy Trial Tribunal- 4 on Wednesday. Judge Md Rezaul Islam sentenced them to life imprisonment (30 years) and for 20 years for offences under two different sections of the act. However, the verdict also stated that the two sentences will run parallel to each other, meaning that they will actually stay in prison for 30 years. The duo were also fined Tk 35,000 each and will have to serve an additional two years if they fail to pay the fines. Meanwhile, no casualty or injury was reported during explosion, witnesses told media. According to sources, some unidentified miscreants blew up with explosives a mosque, Masjid-e-Ishkhel, and some shrines located within the boundary wall of mosque late on Wednesday night and succeeded to flee. No loss of life was reported during the explosion sources told media, adding that the demolished mosque was 100-year-old and only mosque in the locality. Thousands of devotees would come to visit those shrines that have been demolished with explosion, mosque caretaker said. Mr Amiri left New York by a Qatar Airlines flight at 10.30pm on Tuesday and arrived in Qatar on Wednesday where he was taken into custody by Iranian officials and transferred to an Iranian plane, diplomatic sources told Dawn. Mr Amiri had mysteriously arrived at the Iranian Interests Section of the Pakistan Embassy in Washington on Monday, asking to be sent back to his home country. Before his departure, Mr Amiri gave an interview to Iran’s PressTV, saying that he had been kidnapped in Madina during the Haj by three men in a van. He said he was then drugged and transported to “American territory” in a military plane, adding that in the US he faced “psychological warfare and pressure that are much worse than being in prison”. The police were on the lookout for Viqaruddin ever since he went underground immediately after the Mecca Masjid blast here in May 2007. He narrowly avoided arrest on December 3, 2008, after firing at two policemen. He is also believed to be behind the fatal attacks on policemen at Falaknuma on May 18, 2009 and May 14, 2010. The Counter Intelligence Cell also detained his brother, Sulaiman, and two others after raiding a single-room tenement they had taken on rent at Shabajiguda of Padmaraonagar. Among the detained was a homeopathy doctor, Mohammed Haneef, of Musheerabad, who sheltered Viqaruddin. Based on Viqaruddin's confession, two youths were picked up from Miryalaguda in Nalgonda district, 140 km from here. They are being questioned.
