Saudi youth advocate polygamy to solve problem of spinsters

JEDDAH: A group of young Saudis have launched a Facebook campaign to promote polygamy as a way to end spinsterhood among women in the country.
Called “We Want Them Four,” it asks every capable Saudi man to marry four women to reduce the number of spinsters in the country.
There are no statistics on the number of unmarried women in Saudi Arabia, but their number is believed to be high due to high wedding costs.
“Every Saudi and Arab man who is financially and physically able to marry more than one wife should not hesitate to do so in order to end spinsterhood among our women and help cap the high marriage costs that have deterred many young men from getting married,” the campaign page says.
Arab families have also been urged not to complicate marriage preparations by asking for a huge dowry and other financial obligations that young men are unable to meet.
The campaigners also ask men who marry more than one wife to be fair and treat them equally as advocated by Islam. Another group of young men has launched another similar Facebook campaign, which says Islam did not invent the idea of polygamy but only formalised it. They said the West was looking suspiciously at Muslims who marry more than one woman, especially as some of them did not observe Islamís rules on the matter.
‘You should not get a second wife just for the sake of it. You should marry when there is a need for a second, third or fourth wife and you are financially able to support them and be fair and just in your treatment of them,’ the campaign page said.
Meanwhile a new Internet service has asked all those wishing to marry to register their names and data.
The service promised to keep the data of those who registered completely confidential while looking for a match for them.
The organisers of the forum said most of the applications they received were from men seeking a second or a third wife.

Al-Qaida bomb plot: 3 arrested in Oslo

Oslo: Three suspected Al-Qaida members have been arrested in what Norwegian and US officials say was a terrorist plot linked to similar plans in New York and England.
The three men, whose names were not released, had been under surveillance for more than a year. Officials believe they were planning attacks with portable but powerful bombs like the ones at the heart of last year's thwarted suicide attack in the New York City subway.
US Attorney General Eric Holder has called that one of the most serious terrorist plots since 9/11. On Wednesday, prosecutors revealed the existence of a related plot in Manchester, England.
Officials believe the Norway plan was organized by Salah al-Somali, Al-Qaida's former chief of external operations, who was killed in a CIA drone airstrike last year.

CNN editor loses job over tweet praising Lebnor cleric Fadlallah

New York: CNN has fired an editor responsible for Middle Eastern coverage after she posted a note on Twitter expressing admiration for a late Lebanese cleric considered an inspiration for the Hezbollah militant movement.
Octavia Nasr later apologized for her tweet, but CNN's senior vice president for international newsgathering, Parisa Khosravi, said on Wednesday that Nasr's credibility had been compromised.
The Atlanta-based Nasr worked at CNN for 20 years, starting as an assignment editor on the international desk. Her job was mostly off the air, but she occasionally would appear as an onscreen analyst during discussions of Middle Eastern news.
Lebanon's Grand Ayatollah Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah died Sunday after a long illness. He was staunchly anti-American and linked to bombings that killed more than 260 Americans, a charge he denied.
In a Twitter posting over the weekend, Nasr said she was sad to hear of Fadlallah's death. She called him "one of Hezbollah's giants I respect a lot."
CNN issued a statement on Tuesday calling it an error in judgment for Nasr to write such a simplistic tweet.
Nasr later said in a blog that she had been referring to Fadlallah's attitude toward women's rights. The cleric had issued edicts banning so-called "honor killing" of women and giving women the right to hit their husbands if attacked first.
She wrote that Fadlallah was "revered across borders yet designated a terrorist. Not the kind of life to be commenting about in a brief tweet. It's something I deeply regret."
But Khosravi said in a memo Wednesday that she spoke with Nasr and "we have decided that she will be leaving the company."

Hindutva party demands dual citizenship for Pakistani Sikhs and Hindus

New Delhi, July 8, 2010: The BJP has demanded dual citizenship for Pakistani Hindus and Sikhs in line with the Hindus and Sikhs residing in other countries. The party has also demanded that the government should discuss the citizenship of the Hindus and Sikhs with the foreign ministry who have already immigrated to India in the last 20 years. BJP also demanded that people migrating to India should be paid Rs 500 every month. The BJP has formed a three-member committee headed by Avinash Ray Khanna to look into the matter. Mr Khanna said that he had spoken to a number of families in Jullundur, Rajpura and Amritsar who have immigrated from Pakistan because they were being persecuted but have been leading a miserable life since. But despite their repeated pleas, the Indian government had not granted them citizenship.

Plot to kill Zardari in Lahore foiled, says Pak

ISLAMABAD: Six suspects arrested for alleged links to several major terror attacks in Pakistan were planning to assassinate President Asif Ali Zardari and Punjab chief minister Shahbaz Sharif, a media report claimed on Wednesday.
During interrogation, the suspects told investigators that they were planning to attack Zardari at the Governor House during his upcoming visit to Lahore, an unnamed security official was quoted as saying by the Daily Times newspaper.
The suspects said that they had collected explosives to blow up the Governor House to assassinate the president, the official said.
The suspects revealed that they wanted to target Punjab governor Salmaan Taseer and chief minister Shahbaz Sharif as well, the official said. Police found a detailed map of the Governor House in Lahore among documents seized from the suspects.
Police and other security agencies arrested the six suspects in the wake of the suicide attack on the Data Darbar Sufi shrine in Lahore last week that killed 45 people.

Indian-American Muslim chosen mayor of Jew dominated US town

WASHINGTON: An American Muslim of Indian origin has been elected as the mayor of a Jewish dominated township in New Jersey, across the Hudson river from New York.
Mohammed Hameeduddin, whose roots have been traced to Hyderabad, has become one of the few Muslim mayors in the United States. He was elected the mayor of Teaneck Township in New Jersey last week, following a fierce debate among its council members.
Hameeduddin, who won a council seat two year ago, earned five out of seven votes at the annual reorganisation of township government on July 1. It also elected Adam Gussen, a devout orthodox Jew, as the deputy mayor.
"No where else is this possible," the newly elected mayor was quoted as saying by ABC News.
"The opportunity to bring two communities together and break down stereotypes that have belittled our nation is both monumental and humbling," he said.

Blast destroys 19 cars in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: A bomb blast destroyed 19 cars and damaged the building of a car bargain centre in the limits of the Faqirabad police station on the Charsadda Road early Wednesday morning, sources said.
A police official said the blast occurred at 4.55am which left a three feet wide and two feet deep crater. He said 2kg explosives packed in plastic had been used in the blast.
However, the FIR registered by SHO Shaukat Khan stated only three cars had been destroyed.
City Circle SP Imran Kishwar said investigation was underway to ascertain if it was a militant attack or the result of some dispute between the bargain centre owner and his customers. He said the bargainers usually had monitory disputes but police had so far no concrete information in this regard. Investigators, he said, were working on different aspects.

30 pilgrims among 38 killed in Iraq attacks

BAGHDAD, July 7: Militants struck across the Iraqi capital on Wednesday, killing 38 people, including 30 in a suicide bombing targeting pilgrims commemorating a revered Imam, Musa Kazim, Iraqi police said.
Police said the bloody suicide bombing split the hot Wednesday evening air as Shia pilgrims were about to cross a bridge leading to the a shrine in the Kazamiyah neighbourhood where the seventh Imam is buried.

Chidambaram tells Kashmir youths to stay indoors, says curfew to continue

SRINAGAR: The government on Thursday appealed for parents in Kashmir to keep their teenage sons indoors after the deaths of several young men in violent protests over the last month.
At least 15 people have died in separate incidents as security forces opened fire to break up angry demonstrations held across the Muslim-majority Kashmir valley.
Each death has triggered further violence despite appeals for calm from the state's Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Teenagers and young men have often been among those throwing stones at security forces during the rallies.
"It is important that people do not come on to the streets and start stone pelting," Home Minister P. Chidambaram told reporters in New Delhi, saying the restrictions on all public movement would remain in force for some days.
"Children, especially young boys, should remain indoors. I think there is a responsibility of parents to ensure that," Chidambaram said.
Tens of thousands of Indian soldiers, paramilitary troops and police were on patrol in Indian-controlled Kashmir, enforcing the curfew in Muslim-majority towns.
The shutdown was imposed in Srinagar on Tuesday after three protesters died in firing by the security forces.
The city has been the focus of protests since June 11, when a 17-year-old student died from a police tear gas shell.

Separatists planned instigated Kashmir violence?

NEW DELHI: Involvement of hardline separatists in engineering some of the violence in the Kashmir valley is indicated by an intercepted conversation between two of them during which they discussed killing of at least 15 people in a procession near Srinagar on Wednesday.
A large procession had started in Budgam district on the outskirts of Srinagar in the evening and two senior office-bearers of the hardline Hurriyat faction led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani discussed how to utilise it to create casualties, according to the transcript of the conversation available with the Home Ministry.
According to the transcript, one of the office-bearers, Ghulam Ahmed Dar, was heard telling Shabir Ahmed Wani, another office-bearer, that a procession of nearly 20,000 people had started from Magam and was going towards Budgam.
Wani tells Dar, "You guys enjoy payments sitting at home and do nothing."
Dar, in his response, says, "The management of crowd becomes difficult later.....it gets difficult to manage the mob later."
Dar then ends up by saying, "At least 15 people should be martyred today."
However in the event, the police dispersed the procession with a mild cane charge and no untoward incident took place.

Maldivian president reappoints cabinet

The Maldivian president, Mohamed Nasheed, on Wednesday reappointed his cabinet in a bid to end the power struggle between himself and parliament, an official said.
Nasheed swore in his 13-member cabinet in the seafront capital of Male, giving ministers the same portfolio they had before they resigned last Tuesday, a senior official in the president’s office said.
‘The president said after the swearing-in ceremony that the cabinet had resigned for a valid reason,’ the official, who declined to be named, told AFP by telephone from Male.
‘The president said a minority of MPs were allegedly involved in buying votes in return for blocking legislation. The police investigation is still ongoing and cabinet can return to work,’ the official said.

Mousavi lashes out at Ahmadinejad over Iran sanctions

Iranian opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi lashed out at President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Thursday for dismissing UN sanctions and urged the government to brief people about the impact of the measures.
"To say that this resolution is like a 'used hankie' will not ease the hardships arising from demagogic policies, as it is clear to me that this resolution will affect our nation's security and economy," Mousavi said in a direct attack on Ahmadinejad.
He was referring to a UN Security Council resolution adopted on June 9 that imposed new sanctions on Iran over the country's refusal to halt enrichment of uranium as part of its nuclear programme. Ahmadinejad dismissed them, saying they were like a "used hankie and must be thrown in the dust bin."

Afghan soldiers killed in “friendly fire”

Ghazni (Afghanistan): Six Afghan soldiers were killed when their post came under fire from NATO aircraft in central Afghanistan, said the police, describing the bombing as “friendly fire”.
The air strike was aimed at Taliban militants in Ghazni, a restive province in south-central Afghanistan, said Nawruz Ali Mohamoodzada, a provincial police official, on Wednesday.
The incident took place late on Tuesday, he said.

Several government servants as well as police officials of the Jammu and Kashmir government are under the scanner of the Central intelligence agencies following reports that certain elements within the state administration, who have a “soft corner” towards separatists as well as militant outfits, are reportedly indulging in flaring up the current situation in the state, which is highly volatile.
Inputs also suggest that certain elements having soft corner with these groups in the state police have reportedly been provided with additional weapons by the separatists and militant groups.
This has forced intelligence agencies to examine whether those who died in the recent firing were killed by the bullets being used by the central security forces or the ones allegedly fired from the weapons provided by the militant outfits, sources added.

Afghan vote body bans candidates for militia links

Afghanistan’s voting authorities Wednesday banned 36 people from standing in parliamentary elections this year after they failed to prove they had no links to illegal armed groups.
The men, who had registered to run in the September poll, were given more than a month to defend themselves against charges they had ties with illegal militias.
‘They failed to prove they were not part of illegal armed groups. They have been banned from participating in the elections,’ Zia Rafat, a commissioner at the Electoral Complaints Commission, told reporters.

More than three decades of war has

Shifting war crime cases to tribunal recommended

The Ekatturer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee on Wednesday sent nine recommendations to the government, which include transfer of the cases against war criminals now pending in different courts to the tribunal to expedite the war crimes trials.
The recommendations were sent to finance minister AMA Muhith, law minister Shafique Ahmed, home affairs minister Sahara Khatun, foreign affairs minister Dipu Moni, planning minister AK Khandker, liberation war affairs state minister ABM Tajul Islam and housing state minister Abdul Mannan Khan for their consideration.
The Platform for Supporting International Crimes Tribunal’s convener Shahriar Kabir, its member secretary Barrister Turin Afroz, Nirmul Committee’s president Justice Mohammad Golam Rabbani and its secretary-general Kazi Mukul signed the recommendations.
In its recommendations, the Nirmul Committee also criticized the ministers who were speaking in the media over the mode of investigation and method of trial and arrest, and demanded the appointment of a spokesman who would have the only right to talk to the media on war crime trials and related affairs.
‘The way the ministers are talking to the media, the people may think that the tribunal is controlled by the government,’ it said.

Terrorists target boys’ college in Bajaur

PESHAWAR: A boys’ degree college was damaged in a bomb blast in Khar, Bajaur Agency, on Wednesday.
Political administration officials told Daily Times that unidentified terrorists planted three bombs around the college. One of the bombs went off, partially damaging the building. However, security personnel managed to defuse the other two bombs.
The local political administration has arrested 12 tribesmen under the collective responsibility clause of the Frontier Crimes Regulations after the attack.
In Peshawar, a bomb blast destroyed five vehicles parked outside a showroom. “The blast completely destroyed five cars and left 20 others partially damaged in the showroom,” said Muhammad Waris of Faqirabad Police Station.
He said that terrorists had planted a bomb near the showroom, which went off at 5:45am.
The blast created panic in the area, and a large number of police personnel immediately arrived at the site. However, no injuries were reported in the blast.
Police says around 1.5 kilogrammes of explosive material was used in the blast.
He said that a case had been registered against unidentified militants. Police said they have arrested a suspect from the area. The suspect has been shifted to an undisclosed location for interrogation.

Despite much progress in understanding HIV infectious spread globally, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region stands as the only region where knowledge of the epidemic continues to be very limited, inaccessible, and subject to much controversy. In fact the MENA region is still widely perceived as the anomaly in the HIV/AIDS world map and a real black hole in terms of HIV/AIDS data.
A new World Bank report, Characterizing the HIV/AIDS Epidemic in the Middle East and North Africa: Time for Strategic Action, aims at addressing this dearth of strategic information on HIV spread in MENA through a joint effort of the World Bank, the United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Kashmir bar association chief arrested

JAMMU: J&K police booked Kashmir Bar Association president Mian Qayoom under stringent Public Safety Act and sent him to Jammu’s Hiranagar jail on Tuesday, official sources said.
Under PSA, a person can be jailed without trial for two years to maintain public order.
The state police is also looking for 400 people, including separatist hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani’s aide Masarat Alam, who has been calling for the strikes across the Valley.

Pakistan, Afghanistan agree to establish rail links

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Afghanistan on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for establishing the Torkham-Jalalabad and Chaman-Spinboldak-Kandhar rail links.
The MoU, covering feasibility studies for both the projects, was signed by Federal Railways Minister Ghulam Ahmed Bilour and Afghan Finance Minister Hazrat Omar Zakhilwal on Wednesday.
However, both countries failed to break the deadlock over the transit facility for Indian goods that would be sent to Afghanistan via Pakistan under the proposed Afghan -Pakistan Transit Trade Agreement (APTTA).

Terror camps still running in Pak: US

The Obama Administration has maintained that it is receiving significant counter-terrorism contribution from Pakistan, even as a fresh chargesheet filed by the US Department of Justice revealed that al-Qaeda is still running terrorist training camps in that country.
The plot to bomb New York's subway system, uncovered in September 2009, was directed by the al-Qaeda leadership in Pakistan, the Justice Department said.
The eleven-page chargesheet, which was filed in a New York federal court, said that five of the accused had received training from al-Qaeda in Waziristan in 2008 and early 2009.
US prosecutors have accused al-Qaeda leadership of directing the accused to attack the New York subway system last year.

Two injured in grenade attack on NATO tanker

QUETTA: Two people were injured in a grenade attack on a NATO oil tanker near Chaman town on the Afghan border on Wednesday. According to sources, unidentified armed motorcyclists hurled a grenade at the NATO oil tanker, which was returning from Afghanistan after supplying fuel to allied forces based there. As a result, driver of the vehicle Niaz Ali and cleaner Zahid Khan were injured, while the assailants managed to flee. The injured were shifted to the Civil Hospital, Quetta, for medical treatment where the condition of one of the injured was reported to be critical. ISLAMABAD: While public attention has been focused on the political barbs flying between Islamabad and Lahore, behind the scenes the Pakistan Muslim League-N has earned itself a new and very powerful adversary thanks to its inaction against the ‘Punjabi Taliban’ -- the Pakistan Army.

At a recent meeting at the General Headquarters (GHQ), senior intelligence officers conveyed their serious concern to the Punjab government over its failure to act against terrorists based in the province on the basis of information provided to it.
Other issues that were discussed included the lax handling of detained terrorists, especially of an injured assailant apprehended after the recent attack on Ahmadi places of worship (he was allowed to communicate with his accomplices from his hospital bed by a cellphone which allowed them to launch an attempt to free him).

US reveals new charges against 5 in NY subway plot

WASHINGTON—The U.S. Justice Department on Wednesday unsealed charges against five men, accusing them of directing and being involved in the plot to attack the New York subway system at the behest of al Qaeda leaders in Pakistan. Those charged include Adnan El Shukrijumah, a Saudi native, who is believed to be a leader of al Qaeda’s operations program and allegedly recruited Najibullah Zazi and others to carry out attacks in the United States.
Zazi pleaded guilty earlier this year to the plot. A failed plot to set off bombs in the New York subway system last year was part of a larger al-Qaida terrorist conspiracy that planned a similar attack in England, U.S. prosecutors said Wednesday. In an indictment unsealed Wednesday, prosecutors added several al-Qaida figures to the case, including Adnan Shukrijumah, an FBI most-wanted terrorist.

First Army march in Srinagar in a decade

NEW DELHI: The rapidly deteriorating situation in J&K forced the government to get the Army march through Srinagar as a deterrent against mobs running riot on the streets in the towns across the Valley.
This was the first time in over a decade's time that Army had been called out to help stem violence, and the decision, coming against the background of Centre's painstaking effort to show the return of normalcy to the border state, fully brought out the anxiety of authorities in Delhi and Srinagar to the sharp turn of events.
The government's growing concern found expression in Congress's accusation that Pakistan was behind the trouble.
Army is being kept on stand-by near population centres as a message to the trouble mongers who, Centre suspects, are working to a plan to reverse the gains - as reflected in the conduct of two successful elections, success against terrorists, diminished support for secessionists and revival of tourism - made over past few years.

Country first: India to engage Iran

NEW DELHI: Stepping up further economic engagement with Iran, India will hold the 16th session of the Joint Commission with the strategically important country from Thursday. The two-day Joint Commission is co-chaired by Indian foreign minister S M Krishna and Iran's finance minister Seyed Shamseddin Hosseini.
Inia and Iran have been holding discussions at regular intervals on issues relating to economic cooperation under the aegis of the Joint Commission mechanism, which was established in July 1983. The last session of the Joint Commission was held in Tehran in October 2008.

'Iranian planes not denied refueling'

TEHRAN: Iran has dismissed reports claiming that its passenger planes have been denied refueling rights at airports in Britain, Germany, and the United Arab Emirates.
"Based on the latest reports, airport officials from Britain, Germany, and the United Arab Emirates have denied this report, and Iran's passenger planes continue to be refueled," Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast told reporters at a weekly press briefing here yesterday.
"False information is being reported with the aim of creating a negative atmosphere of psychological warfare against Iran," he added.

Afghans do not see return of Taliban: Hillary Clinton

WASHINGTON: US secretary of state Hillary Clinton on Wednesday said that majority of the people in Afghanistan do not see return of the Taliban, and expressed her full faith in General David Petraeus, the new commander of US-led NATO forces in Afghanistan.
"In every survey that's been done, the people of Afghanistan do not want to see the return of the Taliban. Yet, at the same time, they are constantly under attack by a relatively small, but nevertheless lethal suicidal band of extremists," Clinton said in an interview.
"The trick is to create the conditions where the people will feel secure enough to stand up to the Taliban. And in much of the country that exists, but in many key areas --particularly in the south -- it is still a very difficult fight," she said.

Al-Qaida leaders in Pakistan directed 2009 New York subway plot

WASHINGTON: Veteran al-Qaida terrorist leaders in Pakistan directed and managed a foiled 2009 plot to attack New York's subway system and also planned to strike the United Kingdom, US prosecutors have alleged.
The revelations came as prosecutors on Wednesday unsealed a terrorism indictment charging Adnan El Shukrijumah, al-Qaida's leader of external operations, who has been the subject of a worldwide manhunt for seven years, with helping to recruit Colorado resident Najibullah Zazi for the foiled attack.
Zazi's attempt to assemble and detonate improvised explosive devices was derailed by federal investigators on the eve of the eighth anniversary of the Sep 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Zazi pleaded guilty in February to his role in the plot.
Attorney General Eric Holder has called the thwarted New York plot one of the most dangerous since 9/11.

Iran clerics tress-pass: Dictate men’s hairstyles

Washington: The photos, disseminated on Iran’s semiofficial news sites, look ordinary enough: young men with short haircuts, some with 1950s-style quiffs and a touch of gel on top.
But these haircuts are not just a summer fashion. They are being promoted by Iran’s ministry of culture and Islamic guidance as Islamically permissible models, part of an effort "to halt the spread of unconventional styles and promote Islamic culture." More styles are set to be unveiled on Sunday as part of Veil and Chastity Day festival.
The haircut catalog is part of the Iranian government’s long-running battle against western cultural influence. Every summer, the country’s morality police renew their crackdown on "un-Islamic" dress and styles, including loose veils on women and long hair or ponytails on men.

Suicide bomber kills three Shiite pilgrims in Baghdad

BAGHDAD: A suicide bomber wearing an explosives-filled belt killed at least three Shiite pilgrims on Wednesday in an attack against worshippers at a major festival in Baghdad, a security official said.
The attack occurred around 7:45 pm (1645 GMT) in Adhamiyah, a Sunni district across the Tigris river from Kadhimiyah, an area named after Musa Kadhim, the seventh of 12 revered imams in Shiite Islam, whom the pilgrims are honouring.
An interior ministry official said three people were killed and 18 wounded in the suicide attack. Many of the pilgrims pass through Adhamiyah en route to the imam's mausoleum.
Tens of thousands of Shiite worshippers streamed into the Iraqi capital earlier in the day amid heavy security for the pilgrimage, a day after six people were killed in violence. Around 25 people were also wounded in yesterday's mortar and bomb attacks as they travelled to the mausoleum.

Srinagar Army deployment driven by panic?

NEW DELHI:Early in the morning, half a company of soldiers from the Army's Srinagar-based 31 sub-area command rode from the cantonment to the airport. In the afternoon, the troops returned, this time driving through tense inner-city neighbourhoods.
Wednesday was the first day in 17 years that the Indian Army had been ordered out to assist civilian authority in Srinagar — but, ironically enough, there were fewer military vehicles on the city's main highways than are seen on normal days. No actual Army deployment has taken place in the city and, Defence Ministry sources told TheHindu, none is planned: the Srinagar-based XV corps has instructions only to stand by in the event of a crisis.
The Jammu and Kashmir government called for military aid after three weeks of bruising urban violence, which broke out on June 11. Four people were shot dead by police and Central Reserve Police Force personnel on Tuesday, bringing the fatalities in the recent violence to 15. Police say six other civilians were killed in clashes earlier this summer, as well as in incidents linked to clashes.

China, Pakistan reaffirm ties during Zardari visit

BEIJING: China and Pakistan on Wednesday agreed to deepen cooperation on fighting terrorism and economic issues, but were silent on their controversial plans to expand nuclear engagement which have stirred debate.
Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, here on a working visit, held talks with President Hu Jintao on Wednesday afternoon. Expanding trade and cooperation on security issues, particularly combating terror, were the focus of the talks, said officials.
The Pakistani media reported that expanding nuclear cooperation was also on the agenda, though Chinese officials declined to confirm it.
The China National Nuclear Corporation recently announced China would set up two power reactors in Pakistan, a move that some countries say goes against China's non-proliferation commitments as a member of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG). China has already set up two power reactors in Chashma, under an agreement which predated its joining of the NSG in 2004.

U.K. does a Basra in Afghanistan

LONDON: In what is seen as a replay of Britain's humiliating pull-out from Basra, Iraq, three years ago, British troops are to be withdrawn from the Sangin region of Afghanistan's Helmand province after suffering heavy losses. As, in Basra, they will be replaced by American forces.
Nearly one-third of all British casualties in Afghanistan since the invasion in 2001 have been in the Sangin area.
The announcement by Defence Secretary Liam Fox on Wednesday came amid diminishing public appetite for a war that has already cost more than 300 British lives. The growing clamour for the 8,000 British troops in Afghanistan to be brought home prompted Prime Minister David Cameron recently to indicate a five-year timeline for the withdrawal.
The BBC said while the military insisted that the move was a “redeployment'', the “Taliban are certain to portray it as a defeat''.

Musharraf prepares to storm Pak politics

Former president and ex-chief of Pakistan Army Pervez Musharraf has secured himself a launch pad for his return to the country from his exile in London: a political party which is founded with the desire of bringing about "a great change".
"We are happy. There is still a lot of work to do, but we have the concept, the objectives and the will," asserted retired General Rashid Qureshi, who was the military and presidential spokesperson for Musharraf and is now one of the "masterminds" behind the All Pakistan Muslim League (APML).
The APML emulates the name of the historical Muslim party that played a decisive role in the independence of Pakistan in 1947, after decades of struggle for freedom from the dominion of British Empire.
The official launch of the party took place quietly in the southern metropolis of Karachi in June where its leaders announced that the party wants to be for "all Pakistanis" without distinction of religion, ethnicity or social class.
"The people of Pakistan are tired of the government's incompetence. It is time for a great change," Qureshi told EFE, and affirmed that the party "has already been registered" and hopes to establish headquarters in all the big cities and provincial councils.

According to ground reports, after exchanging intermittent fire throughout the night, firing from the Pakistani side resumed around 5 am and continued till 6.15 am, during which Pakistani Rangers also fired mortar shells.

With the Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah facing the heat for the worst crises in the Valley since the 2008 Amarnath law row, his political opponents in the mainstream politics are again aspiring for his ouster.
Governor N.N. Vohra’s taking the first available flight to relocate to New Delhi after being called by the Centre for consultation while Srinagar was burning on Tuesday spurred rumours that the Manmohan Singh government may be looking for alternatives, a political changeover being among the probable. However, the Centre is learnt to be in no mood to dislodge Mr Abdullah at this stage. Rather it seems willing to lend him a hand to overcome the crises.
But that may not put an end to the veiled efforts to impress upon the PMO, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, the MHA and all others at the Centre about the “urgency” for a change of guard in Jammu and Kashmir.

Arrested terror suspects came for Zardari, Shahbaz

Islamabad: Six suspects arrested for alleged links to several major terror attacks in Pakistan were planning to assassinate President Asif Ali Zardari and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, a media report claimed on Wednesday.
During interrogation, the suspects told investigators that they were planning to attack Zardari at the Governor House during his upcoming visit to Lahore, an unnamed security official was quoted as saying by The Daily Times newspaper. The suspects said that they had collected explosives to blow up the Governor House to assassinate the President, the official said.

Progress on Pak-Afghan transit pact failed

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Afghanistan failed on Wednesday to make progress on an upgraded version of the transit trade agreement, but decided to work for developing rail links.
Finance Minister Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh and his Afghan counterpart Hazrat Omar Zakhilwal led their respective sides at a meeting of the Joint Working Group.
The two sides are deadlocked over issues of Afghan imports through the Wagah border and smuggling.
Afghanistan says that a clause in the Afghan Transit Trade Agreement signed in 1965 allows it to import Indian goods through the Wagah border. But Pakistan disputes the contention and says that all Afghan imports have to be made through seaports.

Death to killer of PPP leader

GUJRANWALA, July 7: The local anti-terrorism court No 2 on Wednesday handed down death sentence on two counts and 27-year imprisonment along with a fine of Rs350,000 to accused Faisal Shahzad in the murder case of city PPP’s former president Chaudhry Khalid Humayun and his three men.
He will have to undergo one-year additional jail in case of non-payment of fine.
According to the prosecution, Faisal along with his accomplices had killed Khalid Humayun, his two guards, a driver and a passer-by over murder enmity near mini stadium on Nov 25, 2002. The court had already declared Haji Muhammad Sadiq, president of vegetable and fruit market, proclaimed offender while his three sons namely Asif, Kashif and Tahir were awarded death sentence in the same murder case.

Jirga orders marriage of two minor girls

SUKKUR: A jirga held in Nawab Ali Bambal village near Thull town in Jacobabad district on Wednesday reportedly ordered marriage of two minor girls as compensation to settle a karo-kari dispute, according to sources close to the jirga.
Two groups of villagers led by Mohammad Yaqoob Bambal and Kamal Din Bambal, cousins, had been at loggerheads with each other over a karo-kari issue for three years.
The jirga concluded after hearing both the parties that Mohammad Umer, nephew of Mohammad Yaqoob, had illicit relations with Bashiran, wife of Ali Hyder Bambal of Kamal Din group, and decided to impose Rs500,000 fine on Mohammad Yaqoob group and give in marriage two minor girls aged 5 and 7 years.

US diplomat worked as terror group’s agent

WASHINGTON, July 7: A former US lawmaker pleaded guilty on Wednesday to obstruction of justice and working as an unregistered agent for a foreign charity linked to global terrorism, officials said.
Mark Deli Siljander, 59, a former US representative from Michigan, pleaded guilty to charges contained in a 2008 indictment related to his work for the Islamic American Relief Agency (IARA) of Columbia, Missouri, the Justice Department said.
Co-defendant Abdel Azim El-Siddig, a former IARA fundraiser, also pleaded guilty to conspiring with Siljander and others to hire Siljander to lobby for IARA’s removal from a Senate Finance Committee list of charities suspected of having terrorist ties.Siljander, who also had been an alternate representative to the United Nations General Assembly, had concealed the organisation for whom he was lobbying, prosecutors said.

Six Afghan soldiers killed in Nato ‘friendly fire’

GHAZNI, July 7: Six Afghan soldiers were killed when their post came under fire from Nato aircraft in central Afghanistan, police said on Wednesday, describing the bombing a “friendly fire”.
The air strike was originally aimed at Taliban militants in Ghazni, said Nawruz Ali Mohamoodzada, a provincial police official. The incident took place late on Tuesday, he said.
“It mistakenly hit an army post in which six soldiers were killed. An investigation has been launched,” he said.
There was no immediate comment from US-led Nato military in Afghanistan.—AFP

Sanctions may slow down work, but won’t stop N-activity: Iran

TEHRAN, July 7: Iran acknowledged for the first time on Wednesday that newly imposed sanctions “may slow down” its nuclear drive, including its sensitive uranium enrichment work, but said it will not halt it.
The comments by the head of Iran’s atomic energy, Ali Akbar Salehi, were the first admission by a senior official of the impact of new UN sanctions imposed on June 9.
“One can’t say sanctions are ineffective,” Iran’s ISNA news agency quoted Salehi as telling a press conference in the southern port city of Bushehr.
“If sanctions are aimed at preventing Iran’s nuclear activities... we say they may slow down the work, but will not stop the activities. This is a certainty.” Previously senior officials, including President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, had been defiant in their dismissal of the new sanctions.

Govt urged to rid country of arms

KARACHI: A conference attended by representatives of over a dozen political and religious parties here on Wednesday condemned the incidents of terrorism in the country, including the dastardly attacks on Data Darbar in Lahore and Ashura procession and Nishtar Park gathering in Karachi, and pointed out that terrorism, extremism and sectarianism had no place in Islam.
The conference hosted by the Jafaria Alliance Pakistan decided to launch a ‘Save Pakistan movement’ and called upon the government to make the country weapon-free and to stop banned organizations from working under new name.
The representatives of the Pakistan People’s Party, Muttahida Qaumi Movement, Awami National Party, Jamaat-i-Islami, Sunni Tehrik, Pakistan Muslim League-N, PML-LM, PML-F and other parties adopted a 14-point resolution demanding arrest of terrorists and their protectors and hanging them in public.

China, Pakistan vow to step up fight against terrorism

BEIJING, July 7: Pakistan and China on Wednesday pledged to step up efforts against terrorism, separatism and religious extremism, terming the scourge a threat to both nations.
The commitment came during a meeting between Presidents Asif Ali Zardari and Hu Jintao at the Great Hall of the People.
The two leaders also agreed to expand trade and economic cooperation.
They saw the signing of six agreements ------ in the fields of agriculture, healthcare, justice, media and technology. China promised a grant of 50 million yuan for implementation of the deals.
“China and Pakistan are both victims of terrorism,” Mr Hu said during his meeting with Mr Zardari.

Indian army enforces Kashmir curfew

SRINAGAR, July 7: Indian army joined police and paramilitary troops enforcing a curfew across much of occupied Kashmir on Wednesday, in a bid to help authorities quell violent protests in the region.
The curfew was imposed on Tuesday after two men and one woman died when Indian forces opened fire to contain angry separatist demonstrations that have been fuelled by the deaths of several protesters over the past month.
Curfew orders have been widely ignored in recent days, and the presence of the Indian army was seen as a show of force designed to end the increasingly violent protests.
“We have conducted flag marches through the streets of Srinagar,” Indian army spokesman J.S. Brar said.

Two Pakistani nationals charged in Zimbabwe

HARARE: Two Pakistani nationals were arrested two weeks ago in Zimbabwe as they tried to enter South Africa, host of the Football World Cup, have been charged with using forged travel documents, police said on Wednesday.
Imran Muhammad, 33, and compatriot Warraich Chaudhry Pervez Ahmed, 39, appeared before the court yesterday on immigration charges, and are to come to court again on July 22. Police spokesman Wayne Bvudzijena said that the charge of terrorism was a media creation.

One killed, 100 hurt as police attack BNP human chains

One person died in Naogaon and more than 100 were injured across the country as the law enforcers charged with truncheons at opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party activists at places during the party’s human chain on Wednesday.

Govt to ban SIM card sales to underaged

The government decided on Wednesday to tighten registration of cell phone Subscriber Identity Module and prohibit its sale to the youths under 18 to curb growing crimes using cell phones, home minister Sahara Khatun said.
‘We are framing a policy to curb the crimes and misuse of cell phones,’ she told reporters after an inter-ministerial meeting on the issue.
She said that the policy would be finalised in two months.
