Let's Shed A Few Drops Of Tears

By Sumit Paul, New Age Islam 4 September 2025 "Men have shed more tears than all the waters lying in the great oceans." The Buddha Ashkon Ko Dil Mein Na Rahne Do Aate Hain Aankhon Mein Toh Bahne Do (Don't let tears remain in the crevices of your heart / Let them flow when they appear in the eyes) Hansne Pe Theen Bandishein Kayee Aaj Kya Rone Ki Bhi Ijazat Nahin? (There were many restrictions on laughing / Is there no permission even for crying?) The readers may be aware that crying clubs are emerging like laughter clubs in the metros (esp. in Bombay). Inspired by Japan’s ‘tear-seeking gatherings’, ruikatsu, and organised by event management companies, these clubs provide what erstwhile families did, a shoulder to cry on but without any judgement, albeit at a cost. What is noteworthy is that it is not just millennials and Gen Z that are thronging these clubs, but people across age groups, genders, and professions are seen to be gravitating to these gatherings. This indicates that, as a society, we have stopped listening to fellow citizens. Crying is cathartic. Humans must cry because when they hold their tears back, the pent up sorrow breaks them. Cry whenever emotions overwhelm you. Cry for your own sake. Cry for your mental, physical and emotional well-being. There's a Persian adage, ' One who doesn't cry is capable of committing the most heinous crimes.' Tears are catalysts of humane aspects that constitute our persona and make all of us humans. They (tears) cleanse the firmament of our turbid existence and the azure blue sky of our life paves the way for a bright and rejuvenating sunshine. In the silence of our tears, lies the strength of our resilience. By allowing ourselves to feel and express our emotions, particularly through tears, we are actually tapping into a wellspring of inner strength and resilience. This idea reminds us that it is okay to feel pain and sadness, and that through these difficult experiences, we can emerge stronger and more capable of facing life's challenges. In embracing our tears and finding strength within them, we are able to navigate through adversity with courage and grace. Sometimes the strongest hearts carry the heaviest burdens in silence. Even those with the strongest hearts can face immense challenges and burdens that they carry alone. These individuals may put on a brave face for the world, but deep down they are silently struggling with their own battles. They must shed tears to unburden themselves of the pain they've been carrying silently, for, the truest expression of pain is found in the silent tears we shed. Sometimes the most potent form of pain is not found in loud cries or dramatic outbursts, but in the silent tears we shed when no one is around to witness our suffering. In those moments of solitude, when we are left to confront our innermost emotions, our tears speak volumes about the depth of our pain and heartache. The quietness of these tears also underscores the isolating nature of suffering, as we often bear our burdens alone, silently enduring our struggles. Although tears may be silent, their existence is a powerful indicator of the depth of our feelings. They can convey a range of emotions, from sorrow and pain to joy and relief. When we shed tears, we are expressing a part of ourselves that words cannot always capture. They are a physical manifestation of the emotions that lie within us, a raw and honest reflection of our innermost thoughts and feelings. In this way, tears are not just a sign of vulnerability, but also of strength and resilience. They show that we are capable of feeling deeply and experiencing the full spectrum of human emotions. When words fail to adequately convey the depth of our emotions, tears step in to express what is truly in our souls. In moments of overwhelming joy or profound sorrow, tears speak volumes about the state of our hearts. They are a raw and unfiltered expression of our innermost thoughts and feelings, revealing a depth of vulnerability that words alone cannot capture. In their quiet, unassuming way, tears reveal the true language of the soul, offering a window into our most profound emotions and experiences. Behind the façade of a smile, there may be pain, sadness, and struggles that are hidden from the outside world. It highlights the importance of being compassionate and empathetic towards others, as we never truly know what someone may be going through behind closed doors. While the tears themselves may not be heard by others, they serve as a powerful expression of the deep anguish, pain, and longing that the heart silently carries. Like an echo reverberating in an empty space, these tears speak volumes about the hidden depths of our emotions and the unspoken cries of our soul. In moments of vulnerability and solitude, tears can be a poignant reminder of the complexity and depth of human experience. Tears are the unsung heroes of our emotional journeys. While outward displays of strength and courage may be recognized and praised, it is often the silent shedding of tears that truly reflects the depth of our struggles and challenges. These tears are a testament to the battles we fight within ourselves, the pain we endure, and the healing process we undergo. They are a reminder that it is okay to feel and express emotions in our own way, even if it is not always visible to others. Tears may go unnoticed by the world, but they play a vital role in helping us navigate our emotional journey and emerge stronger on the other side. When we allow ourselves to feel our pain and sorrow in solitude, we are able to truly confront and process our feelings without distraction. In the quiet of our tears, we can reflect on our thoughts and emotions, finding solace in the knowledge that we are capable of facing our troubles head-on. It is in these moments of introspection and self-reflection that we can truly understand ourselves and find healing in our own company. In our moments of pain and vulnerability, there is a certain kind of beauty that can be found. When we allow ourselves to fully experience our emotions, including the sadness and the tears, we are able to connect with a deeper part of ourselves that is often hidden. It is in these moments of brokenness that we can discover our resilience, strength, and capacity for growth. By embracing our tears and facing our pain head-on, we are able to see the beauty in the raw and authentic parts of ourselves that make us human. Ultimately, it is through our struggles and our tears that we can find healing, growth, and a deeper sense of self-awareness. So, cry until the tear ducts are dry. Cry, because it's therapeutic. Cry to show your humaneness. Cry because after rains, often comes sunshine. Finally, don't feel shy when you cry. ----- A regular columnist for New Age Islam, Sumit Paul is a researcher in comparative religions, with special reference to Islam.
