Now Christians Have Also Joined The Fray!

By Sumit Paul, New Age Islam 16 November 2024 The Free Press Journal, Bombay (November 15), has carried a funny news item that Christian groups in Bombay have objected to the titles in a book series called, 'Sex Bible,' for sale on the e-commerce site, Flipkart (refer to, Christians flip over titles of books). This is outright ridiculous! Don't these Christian fanatics know that the word 'Bible' is also used to describe an authoritative book or a magazine on a specific subject, for instance, a fashion or fitness Bible? I'm sure they know because Christians, esp. of Bombay, are anglicized people. Now the followers of all faiths have become over-sensitive and touchy about their respective faiths. This is indeed strange and also ironic because these laughable things are happening in the age of AI and scientific and technological 'advancement.' Moreover, the Biblical perception of sex and sexuality is extremely puritanical that borders on sin and abnormal prudery. That's why Christianity has a bizarre and highly condescending belief of Original Sin that condemns all humans as congenitally sinful because we're the products of parental sex but the putative Christ was not because he was born out of Immaculate Conception! In other words, his mother, Mary, remained a Virgin despite giving birth to him. What nonsense! You want to eat the cake and have it too! In the mid-sixties, a British newspaper described Hugh Hefner, the founder and publisher of ' Playboy ' as The High Priest of Sex and Sleaze. Priests in all faiths are perceived as 'holy' people. That they're just the opposite is a different revelation altogether! A 'high priest' is a chief male advocate or proponent of a particular belief or practice. No one objected. Not even priests felt insulted! Around that time, the Australian edition of The People described this randiest gentleman of the last century as The God of Pornography. Neither god nor its followers objected because they understood that these words and adjectives were metaphors. Sophia Loren was called the 'Goddess of Eroticism.' No goddess took umbrage. When an Englishman, whose name I can't recall at the moment, extolled Malang Vatsyayan as God's amanuensis whose treatise Kamasutra on love, sex and life's myriad facets was edited by the god himself, Indians felt good, nay euphoric, from within and didn't mind that a Brit made god the editor-in-chief of Kamasutra! Those were really tolerant times. These are correspondingly intolerant times. Anything is associated with religion and god. An over-intelligent reader and contributor writes that Sumit Paul leaves no stone unturned to condemn religions. Not just Sumit Paul, all sane and sensible people will condemn this kind of pathological religiosity that has plagued all man-made bogus faiths and mankind at large. Instead of thinking in a universal and cosmopolitan way, we're stuck in our gods, books and religious tenets as if defending them will get us the Nobel in Religion! I've a hunch that the way the Nobel Committee added Economics in 1968 to the original five disciplines for the Nobel Prize, Religion will soon be introduced to this august list as the seventh discipline.
