Human beings are rewarded with the instinct of wisdom and intellect by Allah, the Almighty, by birth. They use their wisdom and intellect depending on the environment they live in. And their good deeds, as well as bad deeds, are the outcome of the teachings of their surroundings.

Transformation to a Spiritual Conscience
There must not be anyone in this world without a conscience. We all have it. Our conscience speaks to us. It asks us to do good deeds and refrain from the bad ones. Every human being has spirituality in himself because where there is a spirit there is spirituality. Those who do not let their conscience die are spiritual people and those who do not listen to their conscience are non-spiritual. Spirituality and conscience are made for each other.
Our spiritual conscience is deep within us. One does not have to create it. Our sleeping spiritual conscience sometimes comes out of its deep slumber unconsciously on the drop of a hat just because of a smiling face of an innocent child, the cries of a dying person or sometimes on the sight of the beauties of nature.
There are many stories of the change of hearts of dreaded criminals and their transformation into a noble person. Any incident or accident may bring about spiritual changes in a person. This is the sign of Allah, who wishes the world to know that His creation is not aloof of His spirituality and He can transform anyone at any time from bad to good.
Transformation to a Non-Spiritual Conscience
Our fickle mindedness, our hasty decisions and our weak faith in our Creator create our non-spiritual conscience. Humankind is very fickle minded. He does not understand the signs of his Creator and rather than thinking about the happenings of his life, he takes decisions.
Human beings life is full of incidents. It endeavours for a pleasant life and expects every incident that happens in his life needs to be pleasing. Some happenings are very saddening, disheartening and unpleasant. Whatever happens in our life is from the God but for all the happenings which human being does not like blames the God and for everything pleasing takes the credit himself. It is because of our ignorant behaviour that we do not understand the happenings of our life is the reaction of some of our actions. In our ignorance, we make decisions that are devastating for us.
God loves His creation so He never does anything bad for him, hence, thus goes the saying, ‘all that happens is for the betterment of the human being’. Therefore stop and think, take help from your religious books and leaders, before any action.
Good Deeds Erase Bad Deeds - The Holy Quran
Good deeds are the sign of the awakening of our conscience. Any good deed performed for the sake of reward is not a good deed. Good deeds rewards are in the form of improved spirituality that is achieved when one is free of selfishness and opportunism. Good deeds are the ones that have the light of humane tendencies like humility and service to mankind. Good deeds are keeping away from the hatred of every kind, social or religious.
Following Ayat of Surah Hud guarantees people that the good deeds burn the sins of bad deeds. Therefore not thinking that there is no tunnel left to return to the spiritual life, humankind has to have faith in Allah’s command:
وَاَقِمِ الصَّلٰوةَ طَرَفَىِ النَّهَارِ وَزُلَـفًا مِّنَ الَّيۡلِ ؕ اِنَّ الۡحَسَنٰتِ يُذۡهِبۡنَ السَّيِّاٰتِ ؕ ذٰ لِكَ ذِكۡرٰى لِلذّٰكِرِيۡنَ
And establish prayer at the two ends of the day and the approach of the night. Indeed, good deeds do away with misdeeds. That is a reminder for those who remember. (Surah Hud - 11:114)- Saheeh International
In continuation to the Ayat above, there is a Hadees narrated by Hazrat Aisha (RA) as follows:
“O people, you should do whatever good deeds you can, for Allah does not get tired (of giving reward) until you get tired.
And the most beloved of good deeds to Allah is that in which a person persists, even if it is little. If the family of Muhammad (SallAllahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) started to do something, they would persist in it.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
Another Hadees narrated by Abu Dharr Jundub ibn Junadah, and Abu Abdur-Rahman Muadh bin Jabal regarding a good deed which wipes out the bad deed. Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
“Have taqwa (fear) of Allah wherever you may be, and follow up a bad deed with a good deed which will wipe it out, and behave well towards the people.” (At-Tirmidhi)
Of all the good deeds Sadaqah is considered to be of a higher rank and it is simple to perform. In a Hadees Abu Hurairah (RA) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said:
“On every person’s joints or small bones (i.e. fingers and toes), there is sadaqah (charity) every day the sun rises. Doing justice between two people is sadaqah; assisting a man to mount his animal, or lifting up his belongings onto it is sadaqah; a good word is sadaqah; every step you take towards prayer is sadaqah; and removing harmful things from pathways is sadaqah.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
Turning to good deeds after one accepts his being at fault should start with repentance. Allah says in the Holy Quran:
“Believers, turn to Allah in sincere repentance; “(Chapter at Tahrim: 8)
And the saying of Ali (KW) goes, as under:
“The best deed of a great man is to forgive and forget.”
Cleansing of the heart is the first thing human beings will have to do for the sake of being a good person, loved and respected by all. Forgiving and forgetting is a virtue that is cultivated with much patience and kindness, the virtue of a noble person. A noble person does not have any ill-feeling against any person, religion, caste or creed and resultantly always performs good deeds. Good deeds can be performed only when there is no bad feelings of anger, hatred or revenge. One should leave all things that have hurt him to God and forgive and forget the wrongdoers.
And Allah Knows the Best.
