Senior Sunni-Sufi Islamic scholar Maulana Yaseen Akhtar Misbahi hosted a special meeting in his research centre and publishing house, Darul Qalam, Jamia Nagar, New Delhi to discuss the issues of terrorism perpetrated in the name of Islam and Jihad. Expressing his grave concerns over the recent turbulent situations and unpleasant developments in the Muslim countries, he said that “an obnoxious concept of Jihad is created by the mischievous elements through misinterpreting and cherry-picking Qur’anic verses and injunctions, with an aim to defame Islam, Qur’an and Jihad”. He lamented that as a result, any act of terrorism perpetrated in India or any part of the world today is conflated with Islam and Muslims in common. Maulana Misbahi further elaborated in this brainstorming discussion that “at a time when Islamophobes and anti-Muslim elements are actively engaged in demonising Islam and Muslims on the pretext of Jihadist activities, some groups of misguided Muslim youths in different parts of the Muslim world wrongly but quite boldly attribute their militant goals and violent acts to Jihad”. “They are actually playing as tools in some hands to serve their vested interests”, said Maulana Yaseen Akhtar Misbahi.
It is worth-mentioning that Maulana Yaseen Akhtar Misbahi is a noted Sunni-Sufi scholar, who was in the news recently for having been picked up by the Delhi police for questioning in the pre-Obama-visit security sweep of the city. He was picked up for a couple of hours by the police from Zakir Nagar, Okhla area of Delhi for questioning about the numerous telephone calls he receives from Pakistan. However, he was let off when it became clear that he is known for his moderate views and writings on Islam and Jihad and the phone calls he gets from Pakistan are from his moderate Muslim fans. He was released after an hour-long questioning with an apology by the chief officer of the police station.
Expressing his deep regret on the extremists’ brazen violation of Islamic commandments and misuse of Jihad and other Islamic doctrines, Maulana Misbahi further said that “even in the state of defensive war, Islam did not permit the killing of women, children, innocent and non-combatant civilians. How, then, Islam can sanction the grave brutalities of a terrorist outfit or an individual Muslim extremist in the name of Jihad? However, he opined that those who, despite seeing the true picture of the story, purposefully put the blame on the Islamic doctrine of Jihad are actually supporting the terrorists to achieve their nefarious goals. “Terming an act of terror “Jihad” or declaring Jihad as “Terrorism” is the gravest form Jihad in the 21st Century.
On this occasion, Maulana Yaseen Akhtar Misbahi announced that he is going to organise a national-level “Anti-Terrorism Conference” with an aim to explain the true essence of Jihad strongly condemning every form of terrorism.
Maulana said that he strongly felt the need to organise an anti-terrorism conference in view of the recent terrorist attacks in various parts of the Muslim world in the name of Islam and Jihad. “This is going to be an unequivocal, unambiguous, strong and well-reasoned condemnation of all such terrorist handiworks, with substantial supportive evidences from the Qur’an and other Islamic and historical sources”. He also pointed out that this will also help the people of Ahle Sunnat wa Jam’at (known as Sunni-Barelvis in India) take an uncompromising stand on this issue. “It is about time we come all out and proclaim our established identity and ideology of a peaceful and moderate people in front of the world. Those who fail to maintain their real identity and true religious, cultural and social ideology are ultimately fated to vanish from the existence”, said Maulana Misbahi.
Maulana Aqleem Raza Misbahi, the chairman of Limra Foundation, Shaheen Bagh, said expressed his gratification about the anti-terrorism conference and said that it will draw a clear-cut distinction between Jihad and terrorism removing the misconceptions of many misguided and misinformed common masses.
Conference media co-ordinator, Muhammad Zafruddin Barkati told us that the event will be organised on April 19, 2015, in the auditorium of New Delhi’s Constitution Club, on Sunday from 2pm to 8pm. He intimated that clerics and intellectuals representing different faith traditions will come and address the conference.
