Almost All My Hindu Friends in Bengal Love to Have a Juicy Beef Steak ------ Laakh Zaalim Ho Zamana Magar Itna Bhi Nahin; Tu Jo Baahon Mein Rahe Waqt Thahar Jayega (Agreed, the world is ruthless, but when you're in arms, even time will come to a standstill) Photo: BBC.com ------- The Animal Welfare Board of India has issued a notice, urging people to celebrate Cow Hug Day on Valentine's Day, Feb 14. The current political dispensation has relegated this country to a butt of ridicule across the world. After hugging a cow, the bovine government might issue a new edict to marry this sacred animal! We're making a fetish of our idiosyncrasies. This pathological love and respect for cow has become a national obsession. But look at the vote politics of this government. Beef is still not banned in the Seven Sisters (north-east states) and Hindus as well as Christians, Muslims and Zoroastrians in Kerala relish beef. Almost all my Hindu friends in Bengal love to have a juicy beef steak. My ex-Hindu girlfriend left a poor vegetarian like me and Maharashtra when beef was banned in Maharashtra in 2015! She went back to Bengal where she still gorges on beef steak and Chapali Kabaab (best Chapali Kabaabs are made of minced beef). Vedic India was enjoying beef and it was religiously sanctioned. Suddenly, cow has become so sacred in a Hindu Rashtra that it's being advised and exhorted that we all must hug this 'poem of pity' (Gandhi ji called cow ' A Poem of Pity ') instead of our beloveds and wives. Jay Ho! Why's Valentine's Day looked down upon by Sanatanis? Is love for a woman a western idea or construct? Isn't it a universal emotion? A few years ago, the most lecherous conman Asaram started Matri-Pitr Poojan Day in lieu of Valentine's Day. That scoundrel is now cooling his heels in a slammer in Jodhpur for raping and sodomising. We seem to have become collectively too irrational. Neo-Hinduism has driven this nation crazy. Apropos, will you hug a cow? I'd rather hug my squeeze (pun intended) on that day. ---- A regular columnist for New Age Islam, Sumit Paul is a researcher in comparative religions, with special reference to Islam.
