Muslim Boy Changed His Name to a Hindu Surname to Crack IAS Exam
May 11, 2016
Pune, May 11: Ansar Ahmad Shaikh, the son of an auto rickshaw driver from Jalna’s Shedgaon village, cracked the UPSC exam in his first attempt. Ansar Shaikh, who secured an All-India Rank 361, indeed faced religious discrimination while studying in Pune. Ansar had to change his name and became Shubham from Shaikh to get accommodation and food in the city.
Ansar Ahmad Shaikh came to Pune to pursue Bachelor of Arts, political science degree and UPSC preparations. In order to get proper accommodation and food, he was forced to change his name to a Hindu surname. “I remember when I went to look for a PG accommodation, my friends who were Hindus got rooms but I was refused. So the next time, I said that my name was Shubham, which was actually my friend’s name,” Ansar was quoted as saying by Indian Express.
“Now I don’t have to hide my real name. I am Shaikh, not Shubham. I can tell everyone now,” Ansar said with tears in his eyes. Shaikh stood firm against all odds and achieved phenomenal victory over them. Recalling the hardship he faced, Ansar said, “My father has three wives, my mom is the second. In my family, education wasn’t so important. My younger brother dropped out of school and my two sisters were married off at an early age and didn’t study much. When I called home and told them that I cracked UPSC and in all likelihood will be an IAS officer, they were shell shocked,” said Shaikh.
Ansar Shaikh’s story is all about courage and determination. But it also highlights the bias mindset of the society towards minorities. In a metropolitan city like Pune, people have to face discrimination for their religious identity, then one can think about the situation in rural areas.

Taliban claims to have ‘thousands of fully armed martyrdom seekers’
May 9, 2016
The Afghan Taliban said it would give “top priority” to retaliate against government agencies involved in the execution of jihadist prisoners and claimed it has “thousands of fully armed martyrdom seekers” at its disposal who are “awaiting to take revenge.”
The Taliban issued the statement yesterday on its official website, Voice of Jihad, after the Afghan government executed six jihadists, including a member of al Qaeda, for various attacks in the country.
One of the jihadists executed yesterday by the Afghan government was Khan Agha, who was better known as Abdul Rahman, according to Khaama Press. Rahman was involved in the assassination of National Directorate of Security Deputy Director Dr. Abdullah Laghmani on Sept. 2, 2009. Laghmani was one of 23 Afghans killed in a suicide attack inside a mosque in the city of Mehtarlam, the capital of Laghman province. The NDS captured Rahman and three associates in December 2009, and was described as a Taliban commander in the province. Al Qaeda and Taliban leaders often are members of both groups.
The Afghan government has indicated that it would continue to execute members of the Taliban and allied groups. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid responded by threatening agencies involved in the executions.
“From now onwards, Allah willing, the Mujahideen shall make all enemy bodies involved in martyring Mujahideen inmates as their top priority during military planning,” Mujahid said. “They will not be allowed to breathe peacefully nor will they ever be able to feel security.”
“We have thousands of fully armed martyrdom seekers awaiting to take revenge, we shall never relinquish our turn,” Mujahid concluded.
While Mujahid’s claim that the Taliban has “thousands of martyrdom seekers” may be seen as boastful, the groups has conducted numerous attacks against Afghan and Coalition facilities using multiple suicide bombers and armed fighters over the past decade. The Taliban possesses the infrastructure to recruit, indoctrinate, train and deploy these suicide assault teams throughout Afghanistan.
Such attacks are commonplace in Afghanistan, and many often take place in the capital of Kabul. In one of the more complex attacks that employed “martyrdom seekers,” the Taliban assaulted Camp Bastion, a sprawling military base that was shared by US Marines and British troops and located in the middle of the Dashti Margo desert in Helmand province. On Sept. 14, 2012, a 15-man Taliban team penetrated the perimeter at the airbase, destroyed six USMC Harriers and damaged two more, and killed the squadron commander and a sergeant. Fourteen of the 15 members of the assault team were killed, while the last was wounded and captured.
The Taliban has given some clues about the organization of its martyrdom units. It has identified two key leaders of its “Suicide Groups.” Mullah Taj Mir Jawad has been described as the head of a “martyrdom-seekers battalion.” Jawad swore allegiance to Mullah Mansour in a video released by the group in September.
Qari Abdul Raouf Zakir, the “commander” of the Taliban’s “suicide groups,” also swore allegiance to Mullah Mansour in the same video as Jawad. Qari Zakir, who was designated as a terrorist by the State Department in November 2012, has long commanded the Haqqani Network’s suicide operations.
The Haqqani Network is an al Qaeda-linked Taliban subgroup that operates throughout Afghanistan and is based in Pakistan, where it is supported by Pakistan’s military and the Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate (ISI). Sirajuddin Haqqani, the operational commander of the Haqqani Network, serves as Mullah Mansour’s deputy and as the head of the Taliban’s military.
The Taliban has also promoted suicide teams in its propaganda. The Muaskar ul Fida, one of several suicide squads operating in Afghanistan, swore allegiance to the Taliban’s new emir in November 2015.

A telephone survey of North Africans has found that they identify as Muslim first, citizens second, and that only 39 per cent of Egyptians condemn religious extremism.
10 May 2016
The raw data for the poll is apparently unavailable to the public but Africa Jeune, reporting, said that the president of Sigma – a Tunisian poll company “agreed to deliver the key lessons” to the French weekly.
Africa Jeune claims that the poll results “dismantle many misconceptions in an outstanding way”.
The poll was conducted in December last year for the Arab Observatory of Religions and Freedoms (OARL) and the German Konrad Adenauer Foundation, surveying people in the five countries of North Africa: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt.
Except for Tunisia, people in the other North African nations said they feel predominantly Muslim rather than citizens of their country. Africa Jeune comments that it is “as if belonging to Islam has, replaced over time the Arab identity advocated by strong states such as Egypt”.
The paper puts a positive spin on results regarding the niqab, (a garment covering the whole face except for the eyes) which is mandatory only in the extremist Salafi school:
“With 84.3% per cent of respondents who “strongly oppose” the niqab, Tunisia is the most averse to this type of veil a country in North Africa the most allergic averse to this type of veil.
“The progressive status of Tunisian women leaves its mark on the perception of religion among Tunisians,” says Hassen Mr Zargouni.
While that might be good news, the overall findings are less encouraging. Support for the niqab is at 45 per cent in Libya, 37 per cent in Egypt, 34 per cent in Algeria, 28 per cent in Morocco and 13 per cent in Tunisia.
A small majority of citizens agree that there should be separation of religion and politics, Africa Jeune only offering the Libyan figure of 61 per cent; but 38 per cent and 36 per cent of Algerians and Moroccans respectively oppose it.
But “nothing is simple”, as the magazine puts it, noting the contradictions regarding respondents’ opinions on Sharia law.
Seventy-nine per cent of Libyans believe Sharia should be the sole source of legislation as do 63 per cent of Algerians, 60 per cent of Egyptians, 55 per cent of Moroccans with, again, the only notable exception being Tunisia at 23 per cent.
Africa Jeune asks whether the universal enthusiasm for Islamic law is an expression of religious conservatism or real radicalisation, before stating that “the answer isn’t is not obvious”. The reason given is because the majority surveyed believed that the state must defend religion when it is attacked but, at the same time, imams must remain outside the political fields.
The findings perhaps do not bode well for freedom of speech in Western European countries which have large, and growing Muslim populations. It also suggests such countries are demographically, on their current course, on track to adopt Sharia law in the future.
The European Commission, which promotes a wide variety of feminist goals, seems shortsighted with regards to its determination for millions of Muslims to settle in Europe. Indeed in June 2015, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini declared: “The idea of a clash between Islam and “the West” – a word in which everything is put together and confused – has misled our policies and our narratives. Islam holds a place in our Western societies. Islam belongs in Europe. It holds a place in Europe’s history, in our culture, in our food and – what matters most – in Europe’s present and future.”
Africa Jeune also reports that respondents don’t do not differentiate between the words “Muslim” and “Islamist”, and states hopefully that this is “probably because the two terms are pronounced almost the same way”.
It also states that respondents agree “that religious extremism is ‘a misinterpretation of religion, and a slander of Islam’” – a favourite claim of politicians in the West.
Religious extremism is condemned by only 39 per cent of Egyptians, but is condemned by 83 per cent of people in Tunisia. Perhaps unsurprising given the country experienced a terrorist attack last year which left 27 dead and inflicted serious damage on its tourism industry, one of the country’s main source of revenue.

Iraq: ISIL Burns Entire Family in Kirkuk for Trying to Leave
May/11/2016
TEHRAN (FNA)- The ISIL captured and burnt all members of a family in an area under its control near the city of Kirkuk in Northeastern Iraq after they attempted to escape from the terrorists-held territories.
All five members of the Iraqi family, including three children, were burnt for trying to escape from Al-Riyadh region to the West of Kirkuk city, the Arabic-language Ara News quoted an unnamed local source as saying on Wednesday.
The ISIL has resorted to conducting odd execution methods to intimidate the people.
More than 50 mass graves have been discovered in the territory formerly controlled by the ISIL Takfiri terrorist group in Iraq.
UN Special Envoy for Iraq Jan Kubis told the Security Council that evidence of the "heinous crimes" committed by the militants in Iraq were being uncovered as territory is retaken from ISIL.
"More than 50 mass graves have been discovered so far in several regions of Iraq," he said.
Kubis announced that three graves containing a total of up to 40 sets of remains were found in a football field in the city of Ramadi on April 19.
Ramadi, the provincial capital of Anbar, was liberated in December, almost one year after it fell into the hands of ISIL.
Thousands of displaces families who had left their homes in the Western Iraqi city of Ramadi have returned home after the city was retaken from ISIL militants.
On Tuesday, the ISIL Takfiri terrorist group buried dozens of senior militants for escaping the battlefield in the strategic village of Bashir in Kirkuk province, and also executed a two-year female baby in her father's arms.
At least 45 ISIL terrorists were buried alive in Kirkuk province after escaping a recent battle which resulted in the Takfiri terrorist group's defeat in Bashir village.
The ISIL buried its disobedient militants in a mass grave in al-Qayara region in Nineveh province.
Meantime, the ISIL hanged a two-year girl, named Fatema Izzam, during its recent raid on Zaqniha village to the East of al-Bara region as she was lying in her father's arms.
ISIL's defeat in Bashir village has weakened the terrorist group, and its commanders and ringleaders are now trying to give a message to their fighters by making an example of defectors.

Terror threat hits economies in Middle East, North Africa
May 11, 2016
ISTANBUL -- An unending series of terrorist attacks in the Middle East and North Africa is taking a heavy toll on tourism-driven economies in the regions.
Turkey, Egypt and Tunisia, which depend heavily on money spent by foreign tourists, are getting hit especially hard. In these countries, bookings for this year's peak summer tourist season are sharply down from last year. The prospect of a sluggish tourism business is raising concerns about growing unemployment in some areas.

Terror kills as many or more in Africa than Mideast
10 May 2016
Washington (CNN)The number of people killed by terror attacks in Africa in the last year is as large, if not larger, than the deaths inflicted by ISIS in the Middle East, U.S. officials said Tuesday.
In response to the assessment, a senior lawmaker questioned whether race explains why the U.S. is not more involved in the fight there.
Obama administration officials testifying before the Senate said that even as Africans continue to struggle with militant groups such as Boko Haram and al-Shabaab, they face the specter of ISIS, also known as ISIL, working to infiltrate their continent in ways that could intensify the terrorist threat.

A year of attacks linked to Nigeria's Boko Haram
August 13, 2013
Boko Haram is an Islamist militant group waging a campaign of violence in northeastern Nigeria, particularly in the states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa.
The group's ambitions range from the stricter enforcement of Sharia law -- which is derived from the Koran as the "world of God" -- across the predominantly Muslim north of Nigeria, to the total destruction of the Nigerian state and its government.
The Nigerian government is struggling to control the bloodshed between the mainly Muslim north and Christian south that has claimed more than 3,000 lives since Boko Haram came to prominence in 2009, according to Human Rights Watch.

Saudi Arabia carries out 92nd execution of year
May 11, 2016
Riyadh: Saudi Arabia on Tuesday executed one of its citizens convicted of murder, raising to 92 the number of death sentences carried out this year in the kingdom.
Mohsen al-Dosari was found guilty of stabbing to death another Saudi man following a dispute, the interior ministry said in a statement.
Most people put to death in Saudi Arabia are beheaded with a sword
Murder and drug trafficking cases account for the majority of Saudi executions, although 47 people were put to death for “terrorism” on a single day in January.
According to Amnesty International, Saudi Arabia had the third-highest number of executions last year – at least 158.
That was far behind Pakistan, which executed 326, and Saudi Arabia’s regional rival Iran, which executed at least 977, said Amnesty, whose figures exclude secretive China.

Car Bomb in Baghdad Market Kills Dozens
May/11/2016
TEHRAN (FNA)- A car bomb exploded near a market in a Shiite area of North Baghdad on Wednesday, killing at least three dozen people, security and medical officials said.
Officials said that the blast, which hit the Sadr City area at around 10 am local time (0700 GMT), killed at least 30 people and wounded 95 people, Agence France Presse reported.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, but the ISIL terrorist group often carries out bombings in Baghdad and elsewhere in Iraq, especially targeting Shiite Muslims.
Iraqi forces have regained significant ground from ISIL, which overran swathes of territory North and West of Baghdad in 2014.
But the terrorists still control a large part of Western Iraq, and are able to carry out frequent bombings in government-held areas.

UK police apologise for Muslim phrase 'Allahu akbar' used in terrorism training exercise
May 11, 2016
In video footage of the exercise broadcast on British television, a fake Muslim terrorist dressed in black could be seen running into the complex in Manchester shouting the words before setting off a bomb and falling to the floor.
"On reflection, we acknowledge that it was unacceptable to use this religious phrase immediately before the mock suicide bombing, which so vocally linked this exercise with Islam," said Garry Shewan, a senior officer at Greater Manchester Police.
In a statement, Mr Shewan said the scenario had been based on "a suicide attack by an extremist Daesh-style organisation" — Daesh being an Arabic acronym for the Islamic State militant group — but added: "We recognise and apologise for the offence that this has caused."

Muslim family considers suit against Citadel over headscarf
May 11, 2016
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — The Citadel military college, known for its buttoned-up uniforms and strict discipline, decided Tuesday that a newly accepted female student cannot wear a traditional Muslim headscarf if she enrolls in the fall.
The decision disappointed the student, according to a family spokesman who said they are considering legal options because they believe "it's the same issue faced by African-Americans and women in this situation." The school didn't immediately embrace the first African-American cadets during the 1960s and fought the enrollment of women in the 1990s before relenting.

US defies Myanmar government request to stop using term Rohingya
May 11, 2016
The new ambassador of the United States to Myanmar said he would keep using the term Rohingya for the persecuted Muslim minority, even after the government – controlled by Nobel prize-winner Aung San Suu Kyi – asked him to refrain from it.
Members of the 1.1 million-strong group, most of whom live in desperate conditions in a remote part of northwestern Myanmar, are seen by many Myanmar Buddhists as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. The term Rohingya is a divisive issue.
Scot Marciel took over as the head of the US mission at a critical time after Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) won a landslide victory in historic elections, following decades of pro-democracy struggle.

Overseas Pakistanis send $16 billion in remittances, up 5.25%
By Our Correspondent Published: May 11, 2016
KARACHI: Overseas Pakistanis sent remittances amounting to over $16 billion in July-April, up 5.25% from a year ago, according to data released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on Tuesday.
Remittances amounted to $15.2 billion in the same 10 months of the preceding fiscal year. They amounted to $1.6 billion in April alone, which is 3.1% less than the remittances received in the preceding month, SBP data shows.
Remittances sent by overseas Pakistanis reach $11.2b
The year-on-year increase was 16.5% in 2014-15, as Pakistanis based in foreign countries sent home $18.4 billion. The slowdown in the pace of growth in remittances seems alarming in 2015-16 so far. According to the SBP, the slowdown is because of “very low inflation” across advanced economies and a slow global economic recovery.

Pakistan textbooks slur Christians and other faiths, study says
May 11, 2016
A new study by a U.S. government watchdog agency has found “deeply troubling content” in the way public school textbooks in Pakistan depict non-Islamic faiths, especially Christians and Hindus, charging that those religious minorities are styled as untrustworthy and fundamentally inferior.
The report, “Teaching Intolerance in Pakistan: Religious Bias in Public School Textbooks,” was issued by the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom.
Released in April, the study found that textbooks in Pakistan foster “public shaming” of Christians and other minorities, indoctrinating schoolchildren with a pro-Muslim prejudice from the earliest ages.
