Prof attack: Police summon Kerala chief of Islamist outfit

The Kerala Police on Monday asked top State leaders of the Islamist outfit, Popular Front of India (PFI), to appear before them for evidence-collection in the July 4 attack on Prof TJ Joseph at Muvattupuzha. The move comes in the wake of the police conviction that the State leadership had prior knowledge of the plan to attack the professor.
The police asked Nazeeruddin Elamaram, State president of the Front, to appear before the investigating officers on August 12. They also asked Prof P Koya, member of PFI national council and chief editor of outfit's organ Thejas, to appear on August 16 for cross-examination.
In the meantime, State PFI general secretary Abdul Hameed and Ashraf Moulvi, president of Imams' Council, an associate forum, failed to turn up before the police for questioning on Monday. They sought one week's time.
Sources said Abdul Hameed had telephoned the Circle Inspector's office on Monday morning to inform of his inability to appear as he was occupied in organising the outfit's Freedom Parade slated for the Independence Day.
The police decided to question the top Front leadership after they got strong indications suggesting that Front's Ernakulam district committee had clear knowledge about the plan. They also learnt that Nasser of Aluva, prime accused in the attack on the professor, and his associate Ashraf were State committee members. However, the Front leadership had said that Nasser was not a member of the State committee.
It is said that there were earlier reports that the local unit of the outfit had decided to cut off the right hand of the professor for preparing a question paper that blasphemed Prophet Muhammad in April last itself. Reports said the State leadership had opposed it as such an act could weaken its position in society. However, the local unit had taken a firm position that Joseph had to be punished for blaspheming the Prophet, which the State leadership was forced to accept ultimately.

Pak Hindus say looted at gunpoint in flood-hit areas

KARACHI: Pakistan's Hindu community has called for deployment of army in the flood-affected areas of Sindh province to safeguard the lives of thousands of Hindus allegedly being looted by the locals.
Addressing the media at the Karachi Press Club, Pakistan Hindu Council chief Ramesh Kumar appealed to the government to move in the army in affected areas. "Our families are being targeted at gun-point by the locals of their localities. About 95 shops and 50 houses have been ransacked and looted by the miscreants," the News quoted Kumar, as saying.
Kumar said that those who were evacuating the areas for safe places were also being targeted and their vehicles were being looted. He said that the situation was out of control as the police had abandoned the area, and there was no one to help the affected people.

Three killed in Kabul suicide attack: police

KABUL: Two suicide bombers attacked a residential area of central Kabul on Tuesday, killing at least three people, police and security sources said.
One police source said at least one of the bombers had blown himself up. Another said a guesthouse used by foreigners had been the target.
A government security source said the bodies of at least three Afghans could be seen close to the site of the attack. The source said the target appeared to be an American company but had no further details.
Interior Ministry spokesman Zemarai Bashary said it was not clear what the target was. “There have been casualties but I do not know how many people, whether Afghan or foreigners,” he told Reuters.
“It was a suicide attack. The situation is under control,” Bashary said.
Another police source said it was not clear whether the second bomber had blown himself up, been captured or was still at large.
The attack came only hours after the United Nations mission in Afghanistan released a report that said civilian casualties had risen 31 per cent in the first six months of the year, compared with the same period in 2009.
More than three-quarters of those casualties were blamed on the Taliban and other insurgents battling foreign forces and the Afghan government.
Violence across Afghanistan has reached its highest levels since the Taliban were ousted by US-backed Afghan forces in late 2001, with the death toll for foreign troops also hitting record levels.
Some 150,000 foreign troops are squared off against the insurgents.
A suicide bomber killed four Afghans in an attack apparently aimed at a convoy of foreign forces in Kabul on July 18, and insurgents embarrassed Afghan officials by firing rockets at a major peace conference in the capital in June.
In February, two suicide bombers killed 14 people and wounded 32 when they blew themselves up near Kabul's biggest shopping centre and a hotel.

Ishrat encounter: Guns tell a different tale

AHMEDABAD: The Ishrat Jahan encounter case is springing surprises, much like the Sohrabuddin and Tulsiram fake encounters -- under investigation of CBI and CID respectively.
The Ishrat case is now under trial at Gujarat High Court. The court is hearing the case in connection with a petition filed by Ishrat's mother Shamima Kausar in Supreme Court. Kausar has raised questions over the veracity of the encounter and demanded a CBI probe.
The latest twist in the tale is a ballistic report of the Directorate of Forensic Science (DFS) in Gandhinagar. The report says that of the seven weapons submitted by the high court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) purportedly used by the cops involved in the encounter, two had not been used in the incident.
It means that at least two police officers are lying. "This is very suspicious as these cops had not fired during the encounter and yet have submitted their weapons and are ready to take the blame for shooting down Ishrat, her boyfriend Javed Sheikh alias Pranesh Pillai, and two alleged Pakistani nationals Amjad Ali Rana and Zeeshan Johar, in June, 2004," said sources in the SIT, which was investigating the case. HC has now stopped the SIT from further probe.

Attacks target Iraq security forces, killing six

BAGHDAD: Explosions and gunmen in Iraq killed six people Tuesday, including two members of an anti-al-Qaida group and two policemen, officials said.
The attacks, which also injured 15 people, reflect the persistent violence directed at people responsible for protecting Iraq as American forces leave. Violence across the country has spiked in the past month as the US moves ahead with a major drawdown of its troops set to be completed by the end of the month.
The most deadly incident happened in the Baghdad neighborhood of Baiyaa in the southwestern part of the city, which was wracked by a series of blasts.
Police and hospital officials said first a pair of bombs exploded on a main street in Baiyaa, without causing any injury. When a police patrol arrived minutes later, a third bomb exploded, killing three people and wounding eleven others. A policeman was among the dead and four were injured.

'ISI has relationship with Taliban'

Washington : Against the backdrop of the WikiLeaks disclosure about ISI's double-game in Afghanistan, former US Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage has said the Pakistani spy agency has a relationship with the Taliban.
"When we got muddled down to 2005 to 2008 or so, I think Pakistan and the ISI changed their mind and they wanted to have a vote at the Pashtun table in Afghanistan and they started (having a relationship with the Taliban)," he said in response to a question at the popular Charlie Rose show on PBS.
His remarks came weeks after WikiLeaks, a whistle-blower website, made public thousands of classified US military documents on the Afghan war, which also revealed ISI's double
game including its Taliban links.
However, Armitage said when he was the Deputy Secretary he did not find any evidence of such a relationship between the ISI and Taliban.

Don't accept any foreign aid for flood victims: Taliban to Pak

The Pakistan government has been approached by an unexpected financial-aid giver for the victims of the worst flooding in the country.
The Pakistani Taliban has urged the government not to accept any foreign aid for victims.
Taliban spokesperson Azam Tariq said on Tuesday that the Taliban would themselves provide money if the government stopped accepting international help.
The Taliban has often attacked foreign aid groups, which they say serve a Western agenda.

US raises Pakistan aid to $55 million

WASHINGTON: The United States on Tuesday announced an additional $20 million for flood victims in Pakistan, bringing its contribution to date to $55 million.
“This disaster is so vast … and as we get better insight into the scope, our contribution may well grow as well,” said US Deputy Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Daniel Feldman while announcing the new package.
“We obviously are closely monitoring what is an unfolding and ongoing disaster in Pakistan,” said P.J. Crowley, Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs.
Mr Feldman said that since weather in Pakistan on Tuesday was good, US helicopters were able to fly and move about 100,000 pounds worth of humanitarian commodities and transported more than 700 Pakistanis stranded in the remote areas.
“Just as the flood is moving south, we are going to move south,” he added. “We are going to expand those activities with new organisations and existing organisations.”

U.N. Reports Rising Afghan Casualties

KABUL, Afghanistan — The number of civilian casualties in Afghanistan continued to climb in the first half of 2010, with an increasing number of children in the toll and a spike in the recently troubled northeast. More than ever, the deaths were caused by insurgents, the United Nations said in a report released Tuesday.
In its midyear report, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, known as Unama, said the number of civilians wounded and killed increased by nearly a third in the first six months of the year, as coalition forces raised the level of military action against insurgents.
In that period, 1,271 civilians were killed and 1,997 were wounded, the report said, with more than three-quarters attributable to what it called “antigovernment elements.”
Death and injury to children were up 55 percent, with 176 killed and 389 wounded, the report said, noting that improvised bombs were often placed in areas frequented by the young, like parks and markets.

US reassures India on military aid to Pakistan

NEW DELHI: A senior US defence official sought Tuesday to soothe India's concerns about US weapons supplies to arch-rival Pakistan.
US Undersecretary for Defence Michelle Flournoy told reporters in New Delhi that Washington was “clearly observing” how these arms were being used by Pakistan.
The United States is “mindful of these concerns as we take steps to support the equipping of Pakistan for the current counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism purposes,” she said at the end of a two-day trip to India.
Indian Defence Minister A.K. Antony said last month that the scale of US military assistance to Pakistan was “disproportionate to the war on terror” for which it was intended.
“We feel that there is every possibility of diverting this sophisticated equipment against India,” Antony said, during talks with the chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen.
India has previously protested the proposed delivery of unmanned US drones to Pakistan.

Bollywood nightingale Lata to visit Pakistan

NEW DELHI — Legendary Bollywood singer Lata Mangeshkar, 81, has been invited by Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani as a state guest.
In what’s being described as a serious Track II diplomacy to restore friendly relations with India, Islamabad’s move to invite Mangeshkar is essentially aimed at spurring cultural ties with New Delhi.
Lata is likely to travel to Pakistan soon, said officials. Though top officials in the government here did not confirm the real nature of her visit, they said she has been requested to attend a ceremony where Gilani will be honoured.
Lata has said she will be very happy if her singing in Pakistan can improve ties between the two countries. She told a Pakistani news channel that she was once invited to perform during the rule of the late Gen Zia-ul-Haq but the show was called off at the last minute, as the organisers said they could not take responsibility for the show.
“I would love to visit Pakistan but no one has invited me in the last 20 years. If he (Gilani) invites me, I will come,” said Lata. The singer, well known as melody queen and bestowed with Bharat Ratna, India’s top civilian award, has recalled her long association with her late friend Noorjehan, Pakistan’s “Mallika-e-Tarranum”.
Prime Minister Gilani supposedly raised the issue of Lata’s long pending visit to Pakistan in a conversation with Bollywood singer Adnan Sami recently. Media reports quoted the Prime Minister as telling Sami: “She owes (a visit) it to her fans in Pakistan, which includes me.”
Lata is currently working on an album titled “Sarhadein” (Borders) that features four singers each from Pakistan and India. “We have recorded three songs so far. We are in the process of recording more songs. The album will be released soon,” she said.
Pakistani singers Mehdi Hassan, Farida Khanum and Abida Perveen will sing solos for the album, while Lata has a duet with Hasan on the album.

Pakistan: Demolition of mandir condemned

A meeting of Pakistan Hindu Sikh Social Welfare Council condemned demolition of a Mandir in Bhabra Bazaar, Mohallah Shah Chan Chiragh, by its owner.
According to a press release, the meeting was held here Monday under the presidentship of Jag Mohan Arora and was attended by a large number of members including Rangi Ram, Aakash Raj, Saroop Anand, Gulshan Raj Kumar, Ravinder Kumar, Anil Prashad, Heera Lal, Naggash Raj, Jag Desh Bhattti And Suresh Kumar.
The participants of the meeting condemning the action said that Auqaf Department is bound to save such Mandirs and it is their duty to safe the building related to the minorities.
They appealed to the government to direct the Auqaf Department to take action against demolition of Mandirs in future.

Condemned woman accuses Iran of lying over charges

LONDON– A woman sentenced to death by stoning in Iran for adultery accused authorities of lying about the charges against her so they could execute her in secret, in an interview published Saturday.
Sakineh Mohammadi-Ashtiani, 43, spoke through an intermediary for the interview with the Guardian newspaper and also put her treatment down to gender, adding "they think they can do anything to women in this country".
The case of the mother of two has sparked an international outcry, with Brazilian President President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva last week offering her asylum in his country.
Mohammadi-Ashtiani, whose sentence has been temporarily put on ice, accused Iranian officials of lying by saying she had been found guilty of conspiracy to murder her husband as well as adultery.

Outcry as Malaysian state allows child marriages

A Malaysian state's decision to allow child marriages caused an outcry Wednesday, with rights groups condemning new rules that allow Muslim girls below 16 years to wed.
The decision by the Islamic religious council in southern Malacca state has been billed as an attempt to curb premarital sex and baby dumping, after a string of cases of newborns being abandoned.
"Child marriage amounts to paedophilia. We should not condone child marriages," said Ivy Josiah, executive director of leading activist group Women's Aid Organisation.
Malacca chief minister Mohamad Ali Rustam reportedly said that marriages for Muslims below the current minimum age of 16 years for females and 18 for males would be allowed with the permission of parents and religious courts.

Bashir: Father of militant Islam in Indonesia

Abu Bakar Bashir is regarded as the spiritual leader for radical militants in Indonesia, but the white-bearded 71-year-old has always denied involvement in terrorism.
The softly spoken Muslim preacher, who was arrested on Monday, served almost 26 months for conspiracy over the 2002 attacks on Bali nightspots that killed 202 people, before being cleared and released in 2006.
Bashir was active in the early 1960s in several Islamic student organisations at Al-Irsyad University in his home town of Solo, Central Java, before founding in 1972 the Al Mukmin Muslim boarding school at nearby Ngruki.
He and close friend Abdullah Sungkar, both of Yemeni descent, were jailed by the Suharto regime from 1978 to 1982 for inciting people to reject the secular national ideology in favour of an Islamic state.

Jakarta: Indonesian anti-terror police detained radical Muslim cleric Abu Bakar Bashir on Monday and several other militants in a crackdown on a network found making bombs and planning to attack the countrys president.
The detention of Bashir,considered by many foreign governments as a driving force for radical Islamic movements in Indonesia,shows Jakarta is stepping up a fight against a relatively new network plotting a coup to form a sharia state.
From documents,we knew this group had for some time made the president the target of their attack, said police spokesman Edward Aritonang.
Bashir,who said his detention was a plot by the US,was linked by the polices anti-terror unit Detachment 88 to a militant training camp in Aceh.He is the leader of Islamist group Jemaah Ansharut Tauhid,and a founder of the al-Mukmin boarding school at Ngruki,one of whose graduates was executed for planning the Bali bomb attacks in 2002 that killed over 200 people.

Washington : The Taliban do not represent the popular will of the people in Afghanistan, a top Obama Administration official has said, a day after a former ISI chief told a US news network that the militant group represents the national resistance movement of that country.
"They (the Taliban) do not represent the popular will in Afghanistan and every poll, every survey - I'd particularly bring your attention to the BBC/ABC/ARD poll of earlier this year - shows that their support is in the single digits,"
US Representatives for Pakistan and Afghanistan, Richard Holbrooke, told reporters at a news briefing.
"But entrenched, ruthless people have the ability to kill unarmed people who were coming back from a humanitarian mission. It's not hard to do. It just illustrates the nature of the enemy," he said in response to a question.

Pakistan has better delivery system: US

WASHINGTON: Pakistan doesn’t only have more warheads and fissile material than India but also better delivery systems for such weapons, says a report by the Federation of American Scientists.
“As far as I can gauge, apart from nuclear testing where India started first, Pakistan has always been a little ahead in warheads, fissile material and delivery systems,” says Hans M. Kristensen, director of the FAS nuclear information project.FAS was founded in 1945 by scientists who worked on the Manhattan project to develop the first atomic bombs.
Later, they dedicated themselves to informing public policy-makers of potential dangers from scientific and technological advances. In his latest write-up for FAS, Mr Kristensen observes that neither India nor Pakistan could claim any nuclear moral high ground.

Pak Army to help locate Indian soldiers missing in floods

ISLAMABAD—Military sources of Pakistan have confirmed that India has formally requested assistance in helping to locate 33 missing Indian soldiers, including three GCO’s, who were swept away by floods. The Indian soldiers were posted at a check post near Tarkot, when they were swept away by a flood at LoC, near Laddakh.
Pakistani authorities have assured that they were closely monitoring the flood situation and have so far denied having any knowledge of presence of these drowned Indian soldiers. Indian army was also actively searching the area for these 33 drowned soldiers, but had little success so far in locating them.

Afghan civilian casualties up 31 per cent: UN

KABUL: Afghan civilian casualties rose by 31 per cent in the first six months of 2010, with 1,271 people killed, the United Nations said Tuesday.
“Afghan civilian casualties have increased by 31 per cent compared to the same period last year,” said Staffan de Mistura, the UN's special envoy in Afghanistan.
“Thirty-one per cent means what in civilian lives? It means 1,271 civilians died, 1,991 were injured, most of them severely,” he told a press conference in Kabul.
He said anti-government forces were responsible for three quarters of civilian casualties, up from just over half last year.

SHC issues orders to declare Musharraf a PO

KARACHI: Sindh High Court (SHC) on Tuesday issued orders to declare former president Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf a proclaimed offender.
A division bench of the court, headed by SHC Chief Justice Sarmad Jalal Usmani, issued the order while hearing a petition by Maulvi Iqbal Haider.
Haider in his petition had contended that a case should be filed against the former president under Article 6 of the Constitution.
The petition accused Musharraf of violating the constitution, illegal usage of national resources, damaging the federation and soiling the state’s reputation.
The SHC had issued notices to Musharraf to appear before the court several times, however, he did not follow the orders.
The court at this took action and ordered to publish advertisements in British and national newspapers directing Musharraf to appear before the court.

Bangladesh bans corporal punishment in schools

DHAKA: Bangladesh today banned corporal punishments in schools after upsurge in such incidents, warning the teachers of legal action if they hand down "inhuman punishments" like canning and beating to pupils.
"It has been noticed that teachers of some educational institutions impose inhuman punishments on the students for various reasons including violation of discipline and negligence in study. The school management committees will identify the teachers," read an education ministry order.
The order said also said that teachers should help flourish physical and mental growth of the students and groom them up as worthy citizens while "students' progress gets hampered due to physical punishment."

Iran slaps 20-year jail terms on 7 Bahais: French Bahai

PARIS: Iran has sentenced seven leading members of its Bahai religious minority to 20-year jail terms, a spokeswoman for the French members of the faith told AFP on Monday.
The US and the European Union had criticised Iran’s detention of the Bahai members, and their reported jailing will revive calls for Tehran’s Islamic regime to respect religious freedom.
“On Sunday, authorities orally announced 20-year sentences to the defendants’ lawyers,” said Sophie Menard, spokeswoman for the Bahai community in France, adding that the group was awaiting confirmation of the terms. “The lawyers have begun proceedings to seek an appeal, which ought to allow them access to the written judgements,” she explained. Iran arrested seven Bahai leaders in May 2008 and this year put them on trial on charges of “spying for foreigners” and of cooperating with Israel.

After a daylong break in strikes, the separatist-sponsored protests resumed in Kashmir valley on Monday even as authorities imposed curfew and other prohibitory orders in Srinagar and several other towns to prevent demonstrations. The police arrested hard-line separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani’s sidekick and former legislator Ghulam Nabi Sumbji from an uptown hideout. Sumbji was one of the three underground leaders who were issuing calendars for shutdowns and protest demonstrations for the “Quit Kashmir campaign”, which started June-end.
The Valley woke up to a tense morning on Monday as the news spread about the death of a 20-year-old youngster Fida Nabi injured in police firing in Shalteng locality on Srinagar outskirts. Nabi had been injured when police and paramilitary fired in the area on August 3 to quell a strong pro-freedom protest demonstration. While another youth Suhail Ahmad died on the spot in the police action, Nabi succumbed to injuries in Soura medical institute on Sunday evening.

Srinagar: A day after curfew was lifted from across the Valley,authorities reimposed restrictions on peoples movement at several places in Kashmir to prevent protests after a 17-yearold boy succumbed to his injuries a day earlier.
Police said Fida Nabi was injured when security forces fired at demonstrators protesting the spate of killing in the Valley last week at Shalteng on Srinagar outskirts.He succumbed to his injuries after battling for his life for five days at Srinagars Sher-I-Kashmir Medical Sciences.
The toll from security forces firing on demonstrators mounted to 51 since June 11 when the violence escalated after a 17-year-old boy was killed when a teagras shell hit him on his head as he was caught in a clash between police and demonstrators protesting an alleged staged encounter of three Kashmiri youth.
The Army,which was called in to impose a strict curfew for the first time in decades,brought a fragile calm that was shattered on July 31 when two people were killed in police firing.More than 30 people,including a 7-year-old boy and a teenaged girl,have died in police firing since then.T

Despite PM Manmohan Singh directing the two ministries to break the deadlock at the earliest,senior government officials on Monday said no progress has been made on the AFSPA front.Discussions at various levels,among different stakeholders,are being held to achieve common ground.The AFSPA matter is also likely to be discussed in the meeting called by the PM with the all-party delegation (excluding the PDP) from J&K on Tuesday, said an official.

New terror plan Germany shuts mosque tied to 9/11

Berlin: A Hamburg mosque once frequented by some of the September 11 attackers was shut down on Monday because German authorities believed the prayer house was again being used as a meeting point for Islamic radicals.
The Taiba mosque was closed and the cultural association that runs it was banned,Hamburg officials said in a statement.We have closed the mosque because it was a recruiting and meeting point for Islamic radicals who wanted to participate in so-called jihad or holy war, said Frank Reschreiter,a spokesman for Hamburgs state interior ministry.
He said that 20 police officers were searching the building and had confiscated material,including several computers.He was not aware of any arrests.However,the homes of leading members of the cultural association were searched and the groups assets were confiscated,the Hamburg state government said in a statement.

Pak flood surpasses tsunami,Haiti quake in misery: UN

Islamabad: The number of people suffering from the massive floods in Pakistan exceeds 13 million more than the combined total of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami,the 2005 Kashmir earthquake and the 2010 Haiti earthquake,the United Nations said in a statement on Monday.
The death toll in each of those three disasters was much higher than the 1,500 people killed so far in the floods that first hit Pakistan two weeks ago.But the UN estimates that 13.8 million people have been affected over 2 million more than the other disasters combined.
The number of people affected by the floods is greater than the other three disasters combined, Maurizio Giuliano,spokesman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs,said.
Meanwhile,soldiers and aid workers struggled on Monday to reach at least a million people cut off by landslides that have complicated relief efforts.Poor weather has grounded relief helicopters and more rain was expected to compound the misery of more than 13 million people about 8% of the population whose lives have been disrupted by the floods,including two million homeless.

Islamabad : Landslides triggered by the worst floods in Pakistan in 80 years are hampering already troubled relief efforts, with aid workers using donkeys or traveling on foot to reach millions in desperate need of help.
Poor weather has made it difficult for helicopters to deliver food to some parts of the Swat Valley, northwest of the capital Islamabad and among the areas first hit by the deluge.
Many roads have been destroyed and landslides have added to the isolation of many areas.
The catastrophe, which has put unpopular President Asif Ali Zardari on the defensive and raised the profile of the military which is spearheading relief efforts, has killed more than 1,600 people and left two million homeless.
“It’s hard to get supplies there. I would like to emphasize we are moving by foot or donkey. We are making all kinds of possible efforts. We are unable to get in to most places of Swat Valley,” said Maurizio Giuliano, spokesman for the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

A BRITISH surrogate mother who agreed to have Osama Bin Laden’s grandchild is expecting twins.
Louise Pollard was given the news during her eightweek scan at a private clinic in Manchester.
She had conceived via IVF using the sperm of Bin Laden’s son Omar and the eggs of his 54- year- old British wife, Zaina, a six- times- married grandmother of five who was previously known as Jane Felix- Browne.
The couple, who married in 2007, had proved unable to have children together and contacted 24- year- old Pollard through a surrogacy website.

5 JMB men get life for Bogra serial blasts

A Bogra court on Tuesday awarded life term imprisonment to five members of banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) in connection with serial bomb blasts in Bogra town on August 17, 2005.
Bogra Additional District and Sessions Judge Nitai Chandra Saha also fined them Tk 20,000 each. If they failed to pay the amount, they will have to serve two more years, the court verdict added.
The convicts are Mamun, 28, Sirajul, 27, Abdur Razzak, 25, Golam Kibria, 25, and Waliullah, 22.
According to the case history, the convicts exploded bombs at five different places in Bogra town including Bogra court premises and Bir Shreshtha Square during the countrywide serial blasts on August 17, 2005, reports our Bogra correspondent.
The names of JMB chief Shaikh Abdur Rahman and his second-in-command Bangla Bhai were dropped from the charge sheet of the case as they were executed earlier in another serial blast case.

Victims of Afghan massacre gave years of service

KABUL: One gave up a lucrative practice to give free dental care to children who had never seen a toothbrush. Others had devoted whole decades of their lives to helping the Afghan people through war and deprivation.
The years of service ended in a hail of bullets in a remote valley of a land that members of the medical team had learned to love.
The bodies of the 10 slain volunteers – six Americans, two Afghans, a German and a Briton – were flown back to Kabul by helicopter Sunday, even as friends and family bitterly rejected Taliban claims the group had tried to convert Afghans to Christianity.
Also flown to the capital was the lone survivor of the attack, an Afghan driver who said he was spared because he was a Muslim and recited Islamic holy verses as he begged for his life. The International Assistance Mission, which organized the trip, said the driver had been a trusted employee with four years of service.

Trial to begin for Guantanamo’s youngest prisoner

GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE: Eight years after his capture as a teenager on an Afghan battlefield, a long-delayed trial is beginning Tuesday for Guantanamo’s youngest detainee.
A US military judge ruled Monday that purported confessions by Canadian detainee Omar Khadr can be used against him, dismissing arguments they were tainted by mistreatment and dashing the defense’s last hope for derailing the trial in the slaying of an American soldier.
His age – Khadr was only 15 when he was captured in 2002 – has exposed the administration of President Barack Obama to criticism from child advocates. The prosecution will receive added scrutiny as this is the first trial under the embattled war-crimes tribunals inherited from the Bush administration.

Arrest Warrant Sought for Egyptian Muslim Cleric for 'Hate Speech'

(AINA) -- A Christian Coptic human rights group is seeking to initiate an international arrest warrant in the United Kingdom against the leading Muslim fundamentalist cleric Sheikh Yousef al-Badri for inciting Muslims to kill apostates from Islam in Egypt. Al-Badri, who is a member of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs and is associated with the primary Islamic institute of al Azhar University, is reported to have stated "God has commanded us to kill those who leave Islam."
Although Christianity in Egypt is not illegal, it is under a common interpretation of Islamic law that conversion to another religion from Islam is punishable by death. Muslims, mainly fundamentalists, see no difference between apostasy and subversion; they fear that allowing conversion will ultimately undermine Islam.

German authorities shut 9/11 plotters’ mosque

An affiliated cultural centre called Taiba was also banned. “Hamburg must not become a cradle of violent Islamists,” the city-state’s chief interior affairs official, Christoph Ahlhaus, told reporters.
“We closed the Taiba mosque today because young men were converted to religious fanatics there. A purported cultural association shamelessly exploited the freedoms of our democratic state under the rule of law to recruit for holy war behind the scenes.”

KARACHI: Bundles of Jang newspaper being taken to Thatta from Karachi have been burnt to ashes near Dhabeji after the driver was tortured by unknown armed men on Tuesday morning, Geo News reported.
Meanwhile, police, renowned for being stubborn as always, has refused to register FIR of the incident, sources said.
According to details, a vehicle, carrying newspapers including Jang, Thenews and others, was intercepted by over a dozen armed assailants near Dhareji, who forces driver to abandon newspapers but on issuance of denial from him, they not only tortured driver but also set bundles of Jang and Thenews newspapers on fire.
Driver said attackers were chanting slogans, ‘Aik Zardari Sub Par Bhari’ means ‘Zardari alone is more powerful than all’.
Dhabeji police has been apprised of the incident but it refused to register complaint, driver said.

Pentagon plans steps to slash security budget

WASHINGTON: Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said Monday that he would close a military command, restrict the use of outside contractors and reduce the number of generals and admirals across the armed forces as part of a broad effort to rein in Pentagon spending.
Gates did not place a dollar figure on the total savings from the cutbacks, some of which are likely to be challenged by members of Congress intent on retaining jobs in their states and districts.
But they appear to be Gates’s most concrete proposals to cut current spending as he tries to fend off calls from many Democrats for even deeper budget reductions, and they reflect his strategy of first trying to squeeze money out of the vast Pentagon bureaucracy.
While large headquarters have been combined and realigned over the years, Pentagon officials could not recall a time when a major command was shut down and vanished off the books, even though some jobs will probably be added elsewhere to carry on essential parts of the mission.

US rescues 1,000 people from floods: WH

WASHINGTON: The United States has helped save more than 1,000 lives in Pakistan as the country struggles with massive flooding, the White House said Monday.
"US helicopters are supporting rescue efforts and have saved more than 1,000 to date," said a statement from National Security Adviser General James Jones.
The US government has provided 35 million dollars in financial aid in flood-related assistance, including 436,000 halal meals, 12 pre-fabricated bridges, water filtration units and emergency generators, he added.
US military aircraft, including six US Army helicopters, "will continue to work closely with our Pakistani allies to help evacuate stranded citizens and transport urgently needed supplies to hard hit areas," Jones said.
The United Nations in Pakistan said massive floods had affected 13.8 million people and eclipsed the scale of the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.
It estimates 1,600 people have died and the Islamabad government has confirmed 1,243 deaths. About 220,000 were killed by the December 26, 2004 tsunami in South and Southeast Asia.

FBI probes medic murders in Afghanistan

KABUL: The FBI is conducting its own probe into the deaths of six Americans who were among eight foreign workers on a medical aid project gunned down in Afghanistan in an attack claimed by the Taliban.
The Afghan interior ministry is also investigating the killings in the country's northeast, which US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton condemned as "a despicable act of wanton violence".
The bodies of the workers -- five US men and three women, an American, a German and a Briton -- were found in Badakhshan province on Friday. Two Afghans were also shot dead and while the group's driver survived.
The murdered foreigners were volunteers with the Christian aid group International Assistance Mission (IAM) and were mostly medics working on an eye care project, but also included a US filmmaker.
US officials and the charity denied Taliban claims that they were proselytisers and spies.

Patient accuses doctor of sexually abusing her

RIYADH: When Badia went to hospital with severe back pain that has hindered her from walking properly, she had no idea she would be sexually abused by the doctor who was supposed to help her.
“The feeling of humiliation and abuse still haunts me even after two months,” said the 43-year-old housewife and mother of a 17-year-old boy.
Badia was admitted into hospital on June 14 where a day later she was seen by a neurologist. Although he had a nurse with him, the nurse was occupied with other things. The doctor, who was of an Asian nationality, then began inspecting her without giving any warning.
“All of a sudden he came from behind, pulled my abaya up and shoved his bare hands underneath my clothes, unhooking my bra and working his hands forward toward my breasts,” said Badia.

Hezbollah accuses Israel of Hariri assassination

The leader of Lebanon’s Hezbollah has presented aerial reconnaissance footage that he said implicates Israel in the 2005 assassination of Rafik Hariri.
But Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, who has been in hiding since his Shia Muslim group battled Israel in a monthlong 2006 war, acknowledged the material was not absolute proof.
“This is evidence, indications ... that open new horizons for the investigations,” Nasrallah said at a lengthy press conference late on Monday in which he spoke to reporters via satellite link.
The speech comes as pressure is mounting on Hezbollah over a Netherlands-based tribunal investigating Hariri’s assassination, which is set to issue indictments this year. If Hezbollah is indicted, there are fears it could spark riots between the Sunni supporters of Hariri and Shia followers of Hezbollah.

Iranian Akbar Ganji named ‘press freedom hero’

VIENNA — The International Press Institute on Monday named Iranian journalist and dissident Akbar Ganji as its 59th “World Press Freedom Hero” in honour of his defence of freedom of speech and equal rights.
Ganji, 50, spent six years in Iran’s infamous Evin prison for articles that accused high-level political figures and clerics of involvement in the assassinations of intellectuals and dissidents, IPI said in a statement.
Despite the brutal conditions, he continued to write, outlining steps by which Iran could achieve a secular democracy and emphasising respect for human rights and an independent press and judiciary.
He was released in 2006 and left Iran but continued to campaign for freedom and liberty for his country, the statement said.

US blocks money for Lebanon’s army

WASHINGTON - U.S. lawmakers said on Monday they were blocking U.S. funding for Lebanon’s military after a deadly border clash last week between Lebanon and Israel.
Two key Democrats, Representatives Nita Lowey and Howard Berman, announced they were holding up $100 million that has been approved for Lebanon’s army but not yet spent. A senior House Republican, Eric Cantor, said future funding should be stopped too, pending an inquiry.
“This incident was tragic and entirely avoidable. U.S. assistance is intended to enhance our safety and that of our allies. On August 3, I placed a hold on 2010 assistance to Lebanon in the wake of this outrageous incident,” said Lowey, who chairs the House subcommittee on foreign aid.
The State Department said the Obama administration was not planning to re-evaluate its military cooperation with Lebanon. Spokesman P.J. Crowley said officials were not aware of any U.S. equipment being used during the incident.
