Self proclaimed Islamic scholar and student of comparative religions Dr. Zakir Naik is a familiar name to Muslims and non Muslims alike, albeit for different reasons. While Muslims marvel at his “knowledge” and “wisdom”, others make good use of him for laughter therapy. Below are some of the grandiose statements made by this so called “scholar” and my unbiased attempt to dissect them. I do not know much about the Koran except for what I have read on this site and for this reason I chose to stick with the socio economic ideas of this man in an attempt to read his mind.

Dr. Naik – If two sisters were walking on the street, one in hijab and the other wearing a mini skirt, men would invariably eve tease the one wearing the skirt. So hijab protects the Muslim women from men and rape.

Reply – Don’t all countries have laws that protect women? It’s a different matter that laws in Islamic countries are heavily biased against women to the extent that they require more than one witness ( four in some countries) to prove a case against a man. In the civilized world of non Muslims, you cannot touch a woman even if she is in a bikini on the beach. This statement of Dr. Naik exposes the hypocrisy, double standards and status of women in Islamic countries. If you go by the way women are treated in Islamic societies, women there should be wearing the hijab to protect themselves from fellow Muslims!

This statement is factually wrong because Pakistan does not have deployed nuclear weapons and its missiles do not have the range to strike Israel. It is amazing that Mr Biden should have delivered this gaffe, billed as he is as a foreign policy expert. In any case, his statement is going to play in favour of those in Pakistan who say that the war against terrorism is not Pakistan’s war and that the US is less interested in fighting Al Qaeda than in destroying Pakistan’s nuclear capability. His comment on the growth of terrorism in Pakistan draws on the lack of support by the media — “it is not Pakistan’s war” — to the Pakistan army as it fights terrorists in the Tribal Areas. Of course Mr Biden didn’t say he did not believe Prime Minister Gilani when the latter said recently that terrorists in the Tribal Areas were training foreigners on Pakistani territory and that these elements could attack the United States. In fact, the Biden remark reflects the confidence he has in the democratic order now in place in Pakistan. Another government “backgrounder” from Pakistan says that Al Qaeda and the Taliban are “not different entities but one consolidated structure” planning to transform Pakistan into an Al Qaeda state.

Probe agencies say Indian Mujahideen, reported to be behind the blasts in Delhi, is a front for SIMI. The author of the first description about SIMI, Shahid Badar, the organisation's president during the first ban in September 2001, stated on oath before the Tribunal that “SIMI has ceased to exist after the first ban”. “SIMI does not endure any illegal or violent activities and has issued strong press statements condemning illegal and violent activities,” the organisation says in its affidavit. But the Home Ministry's take on the SIMI has achieved the fourth ban for the latter in the Supreme Court, followed with an extension till October. The ministry, in its affidavit, describes SIMI as an association which is not only “financially sound” but capable of orchestrating frequent trans-border movements of its cadres to partner with international terror outfits like Lashkar-e-Toiba, the architect of the 2005 pre-Diwali blasts in Delhi, Hizb-ul-Mujahideen and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

Should Women cover their faces?

The most definitive Qur’anic statement in this regard is: “Let them draw their head-coverings over their bosoms.” (24: 31) In fact, the statement refers to the opening at the top of a woman’s dress. It requires that the head covering should be drawn so as to cover the top opening of a woman’s dress. However, in translation we substitute the top of the dress by the part of the body it shows. There is no reference here to face, but to bosom. This means that the head covering should cover the bosom. This ensures that should the dress have a low cut, revealing part of the woman’s bosom, it is covered by her head scarf.

There are many Hadiths that speak of women talking to the Prophet or to his companions, with their faces uncovered. One Hadith mentions that on one Eid occasion, the Prophet went to the women to address them, realizing that they could not have heard his sermon already given. The reporter of the Hadith mentions that ‘a woman with dark red cheeks’ put to him a certain question. How could the reporter of the Hadith describe her in such terms if her face was covered?

This timidity translates into an inability to define war goals. Two high-level US statements from late 2001 typify the vague and ineffective declarations issued by Western Governments. Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld defined victory as establishing "an environment where we can in fact fulfil and live (our) freedoms." In contrast, Mr George W Bush announced a narrower goal, "the defeat of the global terror network" -- whatever that undefined network might be.

"Defeating terrorism" has, indeed, remained the basic war goal. By implication, terrorists are the enemy and counter-terrorism is the main response.

But observers have increasingly concluded that terrorism is just a tactic, not an enemy. Mr Bush effectively admitted this much in mid-2004, acknowledging that "We actually misnamed the war on terror." Instead, he called the war a "struggle against ideological extremists who do not believe in free societies and who happen to use terror as a weapon to try to shake the conscience of the free world".
