Viewed historically, the father of Osama bin Laden is Napoleon; the heinous expedition of 1798 is the Western world’s most paranoid act, which – completed with the post-WW I ridiculous congresses and trashy treaties signed against the Ottoman Empire’s existence and territories – triggered in and by itself the Islamic radicalism and terrorism, as reaction of the Islamically uneducated Muslims. The earlier completed collapse of the Islamic Civilization in the late 16th – early 17th century deprived the Islamic World from any comeback possibility to the heights of civilization that prevailed throughout Islam for a millennium.

It was simply inane for the Western powers to assume that any effort of Westernization of the Islamic world could possibly happen at the same time with the destruction of its political structure, namely the Ottoman Empire, the Safevid – Qadjar Empire of Iran and the Mughal Empire of India. When a society or a number of societies are forced to brusquely change through humiliation, detrimental self-depreciation, and manoeuvred developments geared to trigger rejection of any concept of progress, improvement, explorative spirit, and search for historical integrity and cultural authenticity (the absence of which leads to national disintegration, total blockage of the nation-building process, and socio-economic and political self-destruction), the final stages of the decayed involve reactionary obscu

rantism, extreme radicalism, and terrorism.

Contribution of Islam to world civilization

Let us consider the hundreds of scientific facts mentioned in the Holy Quran. For example, the fact that the earth was previously a part of the sun and after its separation, it became a habitable place for humankind, as mentioned in chapter 21, verse 30. That matter is made up of sub-atomic particles (chapter 10, verse 61). That the embryo in the mother's womb in enclosed by three epithelial coverings (chapter 39, verse 6). That each human being has a unique fingerprint (chapter 75, verse 4) etc. There are thousands of other scientific facts in the Holy Quran.

Regrettably, today the West is at its peak and we have lagged behind so far. However, our downfall is not due to Islam, as the West would like us to believe, but due to our sheer neglect of Islamic principles. We must realize that Islam is undeniably the most progressive religion, which is in fact a way of life with a very wide scope.

Of course, life is a very hard struggle. However, struggle is an inbuilt instinct of human nature. Struggle is a way but not an accomplishment or attainment in itself. We should make an effort and struggle but at the same time make Du'aa. This is where Tawakkul, i.e. trust in Allaah comes because destiny supersedes thought. We must trust in Allaah for our betterment, because if success depended merely upon one’s personal struggle, then nobody in the world would be unsuccessful. Furthermore, struggle is itself predestined by Allaah. Man should do his best, then leave the rest to Allaah, Most High.

A wave of counter-propaganda to ease people out of the stranglehold of militants needed

Gunship helicopters hover over the region, the boom of guns is heard once more and some reports say a cleric believed to be the mastermind behind past suicide attacks has been killed. Both sides blame the other for breaking the terms of the peace deal. From an outside perspective, it seems though the key blame for this must lie with militants who began a new campaign of attacks on schools and shops, with the leader, Maulana Fazlullah, issuing an unabashed threat of still greater violence.

Clearly, the militants care nothing for promises or for the people of the area, trapped in a conflict that has ripped the economy and social structure of the area into small shreds. One can only wonder what the Buddha, who still looks down serenely on parts of the Swat Valley from rock cliffs that stand over the area, makes of this descent into chaos in a part of the world where the Gandhara civilization once flourished. Of course, in some places, even Buddha himself has not been spared -- with his image blown up by militants bent on destruction and driven by blinding intolerance.

Since Samuel P Huntington has theorised the concept of clash of civilizations in the 21st century and beyond on cultural and religious basis, first in his article and then in his book, the world seems to have grown more intolerant and insecure. Identities have always been an important area of concern in human life. The tribal setup has had a strong tendency to preserve identity by means of language, mannerism, religious symbols, etc. Every religion epitomised symbolism to build a distinction about itself among other religions. Clashes on the basis of cultural and religious biases have a primitive history. Perhaps Huntington had thought that after attaining super academic heights and relentless technological breakthroughs, human beings would dump the tribal instinct. When that instinct in its natural course unfurled simultaneously in many parts of the world, opening new wounds and bruising the old, Samuel was taken aback and a theory came about that had nothing new about it.
