True submission to God means a happy acceptance of whatever comes from Him and a determined effort to carry out His commandments and implement His guidance. Worship plays an important role in all this. It strengthens the relationship between man and God and makes it an active relationship, which affects man’s behavior, values and ideas. In Islam, worship does not belong to the cosmetic or idealistic side of life. It is indeed an important part of the essential and practical side. By offering five prayers a day, everyday, Muslims acquire a very real sense of God’s presence with them every second of their lives. Thus, they have no chance to forget or overlook the fact that they have submitted themselves to Him. Hence, all their actions, ideas, and concepts about life, their role in it and their destiny are conditioned by this fact. Their overriding ambition becomes simple: to win God’s pleasure.

The Prophet cherished Khadeejah’s memory for the rest of his life. This manifested itself mostly in the way he treated her friends and those who had anything to do with her. He inquired after them and would send gifts to them. If he had a sheep slaughtered, he would send some meat to her friends. Once an old woman visited him and he was so kind to her. When the woman had left, Ayesha asked him about that. He said: ‘She used to visit us at Khadeejah’s.’ Another woman called Zufar was the recipient of regular kindness from the Prophet simply because she was a hairdresser who attended to Khadeejah’s needs.

Should Women cover their faces?

The most definitive Qur’anic statement in this regard is: “Let them draw their head-coverings over their bosoms.” (24: 31) In fact, the statement refers to the opening at the top of a woman’s dress. It requires that the head covering should be drawn so as to cover the top opening of a woman’s dress. However, in translation we substitute the top of the dress by the part of the body it shows. There is no reference here to face, but to bosom. This means that the head covering should cover the bosom. This ensures that should the dress have a low cut, revealing part of the woman’s bosom, it is covered by her head scarf.

There are many Hadiths that speak of women talking to the Prophet or to his companions, with their faces uncovered. One Hadith mentions that on one Eid occasion, the Prophet went to the women to address them, realizing that they could not have heard his sermon already given. The reporter of the Hadith mentions that ‘a woman with dark red cheeks’ put to him a certain question. How could the reporter of the Hadith describe her in such terms if her face was covered?
