Change Is Coming To Islam

Last week, I took the Euro Star from St Pancras International station in London to Paris. Just after clearing immigration, I was stopped by a security officer. Nothing unusual in that, except I was the only one he stopped and questioned in literally thousands of passengers. I had some time to kill so I stood beside him to watch who else he interrogates . In 40 minutes, he only stopped two other people. The first was an old man clearly recognisable as a Muslim: beard, cap, badly-fitted suit, Arab (I guessed Tunisian) origins. The other was a person who strikes terror in the heart of every security officer: a Muslim woman in hijab.

This is perhaps the most noticeable feature of the passing decade for us Muslims. We are now universally regarded as objects of suspicion and subjects for interrogation.

The main reason behind this is the momentous atrocity that began the Noughties: the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington on September 11, 2001. It is hardly surprising that the last decade has been dominated by the consequences of that attack. Most of the negative as well as positive developments in the Muslim world during the last ten years can be traced to that fateful event.

Terrorism, however, was not new to the Muslim world: it had been a problem before 9/11. In Pakistan , Kashmir, Egypt, and in Palestine, the cycle of sectarian and ideological terror and counter terror had already cost innumerable lives. In Chechnya, Bosnia and occupied Palestine, Muslims were victims of what can only be described as state-sponsored terrorism. And the vast majority of the victims of this internal and external violence were Muslims.

Terrorism of the strong & terrorism of the weak, NewAgeIslam.com

The US- led war on terror serves as a useful ideological banner for purposes which have included support for repression in Algeria and the demonization of Islam and Muslims.

Virgilio Alfonso da Silva rejects the notion of a war on terror, for Al Qaeda- type actions are a “momentary affront to effective sovereignty”, not a warlike existential threat to countries or part of some project of territorial occupation. Unfortunately, even some who reject the war metaphor nonetheless seek interrogation tactics” and detention of mere suspects, to be denied legal recourse. --Achin Vanaik

India: Politicians are to blame for terror - Central agencies
S Balakrishnan, TNN

Sources in intelligence agencies said it is the political leadership which is to be blamed for the elusive Indian Mujahideen's current run of the country. A senior official said "Take the case of Hassan Ali, the Pune-based businessman. He was under the scanner of several Central agencies, including the Intelligence Bureau, Enforcement Directorate, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence and other bodies. Finally, it was found that he had handled hawala transactions valued at a mind numbing Rs 35,000 crore through Swiss banks.''

The bank accounts were traced and he was brought in for interrogation. How was it possible for a businessman to have access to so much cash, was the question on everyone's mind. The probe was stymied midway by vested interests with political clout. Ali has done the vanishing act. His wife and brother-in-law too are missing. "Why was he allowed to go scot free?'' asked an IPS officer.

Sources said there was no evidence of any concrete link between Ali and terror funds. "Nevertheless, why was he taken off the hook? In any other country, he would have been put through the grind given the volume of his transactions. But in India he has been treated with kid gloves because of the political backing that he enjoys,'' another official said.

Soft-drink bombs: SIMI's new weapon

Prototypes of liquid bombs were first experimented with in the Vagamon forests in Idukki district of Kerala where a SIMI camp was held in December 2007 to impart terror training to its cadres. The camp was organized by Kerala SIMI secretary, PA Shivli. The experiments with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) were revealed in the statement of SIMI general secretary Safdar Nagori during interrogation after his arrest by the Indore police on March 26 this year.

"Liquid bombs are as potent as the ones which use ammonium nitrate. The concoction can be injected in plastic or glass bottles of soft-drinks and detonated without attracting much attention," said a senior Madhya Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) official.

"The terrorists knew that the government would impose strict restrictions on supply of ammonium nitrate. H2O2 was a suitable alternative as it can be obtained from chemist shops easily," said the police official.

Officials said the soft-drink bottles could be placed in crates or stacked in closed goods carriers and then detonated. SIMI planned to use food colours to make these bombs look like the original beverage. They had also figured out how to fix the batteries and detonators for triggering the device.
