NOSTALGIA: Memories of a Gandhian childhood

For months I'd been eyeing a frilly silk frock for my birthday but my hopes were shattered because the only money my father had -seditious Rs. 10 and Rs. 100 notes with Gandhiji's profile in one corner - would be accepted only at Khadi Bhandar. So we went to Khadi Bhandar. My mother bought a khaddar sari, my father a khadi silk coat and something for my brother. I sulked because I didn't like any of the frocks; they were so ugly and rough. Even the silk ones were not pretty but since I knew we would not be going to any other shop I chose a frock. I don't remember ever wearing it.

At that time, my father was editing a fiercely nationalist paper called Voice of India, now defunct. He was a great writer but knew nothing about managing money, so he asked Sarojini Naidu to join him as Manager and Director believing that a woman could handle finances better. He was so wrong! They ran up debts and had to declare insolvency after a spell. Both were hauled up in court. Incidentally Jinnah was the judge before whom they were produced.

Obama can heal this rift between the US and Muslims and the world at large

That Obama is a visionary nonpareil has once again been demonstrated in the way the senator has handled this turning point in the presidential race. While staking his claim for the Democratic ticket, he went to great lengths to praise his bitter and often times mean rival, Hillary Clinton, to the skies with a dignity and humility that would have made Gandhi proud. I am sure if Obama had lost this race to the Clintons, he would have accepted his defeat with the same grace and humility.

Perhaps this is what distinguishes winners from losers. Maybe this is what leadership is all about. So even as he smoothly went on winning one primary after another, picking up more and more votes and delegates and conquering the hearts and minds of the Americans cutting across race, colour and culture, his rival didn't know how and when to quit with dignity. Even after it became clear that she had lost the numbers game to her more charismatic and credible challenger, Hillary kept on insisting 'we are winning' — whatever that meant. Even in her final speech Tuesday night after Obama emerged victorious with 2,144 delegates in his kitty — 26 more than required to win the nomination — she did not have the courage to concede her defeat. Having lost the game and tried every trick in the book against Obama, the Clintons are now shamelessly eyeing the second spot.

Pakistan: Wise Gesture expected from Chief Justice Choudhry to help save democracy
Minus one, minus two

Plus, “for the first time the higher judiciary is working with the people rather than with the army or the bureaucracy. And right now there is only one issue in Pakistan — the restoration of the chief justice.” A year later, this observation too remains valid, despite all the changes since then, including the transformative experience of Benazir Bhutto’s assassination. The year that was saw a new hope dawn when the Supreme Court restored the chief justice to office, a decision Musharraf accepted even if reluctantly. Over the next few months, the superior courts were seized of several significant cases with the potential to deeply impact Pakistani politics. Some related directly to restrictions imposed by the military dispensation, like the right of an exiled politician to return and participate in politics, or police brutality on lawyers and journalists.
