Peaceful revolution beginnings across Muslim-Jewish divide by Haroon Siddiqui

The twinning will "strengthen the moderates," and help combat anti-Semitism and anti-Islamism.

Jewish peace activists continue to work with Palestinians and Arab Canadians, including in Toronto.

The annual Voices Forward festival is finishing its third run. As reported by the Star's Nicholas Keung, movies, music, plays and lectures about the Israeli occupation have triggered a peaceful dialogue, according to artistic director Amit Breuer, who moved to Canada from Israel four years ago.

A photo exhibit about Hebron is at the XEXE Gallery, 624 Richmond St. W., until next Saturday.

Yet another photo exhibit about the West Bank is in Toronto. Bil'in – Village Against the Wall catalogues the weekly protests held by that village against the Israeli security fence. The show is at Tinto's Café, 89 Roncesvalles Ave. until Tuesday.

There are other instances of co-operation across the religious divide.

The Canadian Jewish Congress and the Canadian Somali Congress have started a mentorship program to match young Somalis with accountants, engineers, lawyers, etc.

Bernie Farber of the Jewish Congress was quoted as saying: "The stress here is on the `Canadian' part of our names. We are trying to forge a path and make a statement we haven't been able to make before."

He told me: "This is Canada."

Kashmir: Some Indian intellectuals’ dangerous disenchantment
India minus K-word

Syed Ali Shah Geelani, self-proclaimed leader of the separatist movement, is no M K Gandhi. But what if he and his followers were to adopt the strategies of non-cooperation and satyagraha which were used to gain independence, and were the prenatal influences which shaped the idea of India? Could the Indian state use physical force against such a peaceful mass movement — if in fact it did arise, as some say it now has — and still retain its moral idea of itself?

It could — and inevitably will — be argued that drawing a parallel between Gandhi's 'Quit India' movement and contemporary Kashmir's 'Quit, India' upsurge is untenable and unconscionable: the British were an alien occupying force; Kashmir is an integral, constitutionally legitimised part of India. But after more than 60 years of concerted

effort — military deployment, repeated elections, the giving of subsidies — India has been unable effectively to counter the demand for azadi.

Islam and Politics
A culture of peace
By Hans Koechler
The situation has been made even more difficult by the instrumentalization of the so-called "global war on terror" for the advancement of a worldwide anti-Islamic agenda. The international developments triggered by wars that are being conducted in the name of (Western) "civilization," of "secular" values and "human rights" which, in their Western version, are ex cathedra declared as universal (whether in Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, or other Muslim countries), are threatening the peaceful living together of communities not only in the Middle East, but in many other regions of the globe, including Europe. This modern "crusade" has profoundly destabilized the social order at the domestic and regional levels and it threatens to destabilize the complex web of interaction within, and equilibrium of, modern multicultural societies.
