As Pakistan's Taliban take control of DARRA ADAM KHEL town, military stays in fort

In theory, Pakistan's security forces are in opposition to the Taliban, who are now firmly entrenched across the country's Federally Administered Tribal Areas and encroaching on the adjacent region in the North West Frontier Province, known as the "settled" areas. In reality, the government has ceded large swathes of territory to the extremists.

Some blame President Pervez Musharraf, who removed colonial-era local government structures and replaced them with weak elected local officials in the settled areas and the military in the tribal areas, who couldn't maintain law and order.

Late last month, the Frontier Corp, a paramilitary force, launched an operation against Islamist warlords not linked to the Taliban who were based on the outskirts of Peshawar in the Khyber agency, a part of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas.

The FC personnel have also arrested over two dozen armed men and recovered ammunition from their possession. The cross-firing came during a search operation that started on Saturday and continued on Sunday with intervals in Uch, Shah Zain and other areas. Helicopters and APC were being used in the operation.

The situation in Sui and Dera Bugti area is said to have become worse and security has been put on high alert in Naseerabad, Jaffarabad and Jhal Magsi also following the operation. More reinforcements have been deployed along the Sindh-Balochistan border.

Meanwhile, two main power supply pylons were blown off in Nasazai area of Kohlu district on Sunday. The bombs planted by unknown miscreants badly damaged the 132 kV Kahan-Kohlu transmission line. Electricity supply was suspended to the Kohlu district and surrounding villages. Qesco also failed to arrange alternate power supply to the affected areas.

In response, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) air strikes and limited ground incursions killed hundreds of armed Palestinians in Gaza, and Israel earned international censure for collateral civilian deaths and "disproportionate" tactics. Israel also imposed a land and sea blockade of Gaza, strictly controlling its supply of vital commodities such as a gasoline. But the policy enabled Hamas to hoard the fuel and declare a humanitarian crisis.

Israel never mounted the rolling, multi-month operation that the IDF had planned. Traumatized by his abortive performance in the Lebanon War, hobbled by financial scandals, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert balked at a military engagement liable to result in incalculable casualties and United Nations condemnations, but unlikely to halt Hamas aggression.

Like Hezbollah in 2006, Hamas won because it did not lose. Its leaders still walked Gaza's streets freely while children in Sderot and other Israeli border towns cowered in bomb shelters. Like Hezbollah, which recently wrested unprecedented powers from the Lebanese parliament, Hamas parlayed its military success into political capital.
