The shame of terror: Father knows best

Surely, the most important, interesting — and, yes, heroic — figure in the whole Christmas Day Northwest airliner affair was the would-be bomber’s father, the Nigerian banker Alhaji Umaru Mutallab.

Mutallab did something that, as far as we know, no other parent of a suicide bomber has done: He went to the US embassy in Nigeria and warned us that text messages from his son revealed that he was in Yemen and had become a fervent, and possibly dangerous, radical.

We are turning ourselves inside out over how our system broke down — and surely it did — in allowing Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the would-be suicide bomber, to board that airliner. But his father, in effect, told us something else: “My family system, our village system, broke down. My own son fell under the influence of a jihadist version of Islam that I do not recognise and have reason to fear”.

The Times, quoting a cousin, said the son had sent the father a text message from Yemen in which he declared that “he had found a new religion, the real Islam” and that he was never coming home again. A February 20, 2005, Internet posting attributed to the son and quoted by the Associated Press said: “I imagine how the great jihad will take place, how the Muslims will win ... and rule the whole world, and establish the greatest empire once again!!!”

Bigamy against true Islamic law, says Indian law panel

New Delhi: Taking on a potentially explosive issue, the Law Commission has said that bigamy conflicts with ‘‘true Islamic law in letter and spirit’’ and added that the popular perception that Muslim law in India allowed men to take four wives was faulty.

‘‘We fully agree that traditional understanding of Muslim law on bigamy is gravely faulty and conflicts with true Islamic law in letter and spirit,’’ the commission said in its 227th report to the government, reflecting the unanimous view of chairman Justice A R Lakshmanan and members Tahir Mahmood and B A Agrawal.

The panel stopped short of suggesting a change in Muslim law as it feared this could stir ‘‘unhealthy controversy’’ as religious leaders were not prepared for legislative reform.

Needless to say, it is not an inescapable secret that what prompted the generals of Mauritania to come wrest their people of their God given and hard won freedom and democracy is that bastion of anti-democratic maturity, were the Bedouins who have been the enemies of all oppressed people in the region from the Atlantic to the Gulf (Persian that is, according to the standard definition of "Gulf", as much as it is to the dislike of our Northern neighbours). Yes, from Yemen to the Sudan and now to Mauritania, there is no doubt in the observer's intuition that our beloved northern neighbours have a hobby of pouring their dough on the barracks of deprived soldiers, who are all of a sudden awash with hundred dollar bills, which they could never in the past dream of seeing with their very eyes, let alone holding in their very hands! Time and again, the Saudi penchant for overthrowing democratic regimes, before they have a chance to get off the ground has sprung up again in the far corner of the Maghreb Al-Arabi to ensure that the model democracy initiated by Col. Ely Ould Mohamed Vall, who took over at Nouakchott to free Mauritania from a previous oppressive military regime to herald his country onto the path of righteous government: for the people, by the people and for the eternal welfare of the people – a distant cry from the idea of governance as the Saudis understand it.

Council members also stressed the importance of the private sector and its role in helping to decrease unemployment. Faris Al-Himyari, head of the YCC’s media and culture committee, said, “It’s important to talk more about the private sector’s role and seek better cooperation between the public and private sectors. We’re talking about the future here, so I believe it’s important for all sides and parties to help build a safe one.”

In the council’s final statement, members indicated that there should be more cooperation between all educational bodies in Yemen, adding that they look forward to creating a better future for young Yemenis by providing them more jobs.

As Mejalli stated, “Yemen’s Ministry of Higher Education and the Civil Services Ministry should have a strategy of cooperation so that college graduates will be able to find jobs. This also would help dispel the many unacceptable phenomena that are growing in this country, one of which is terrorism.”

Al-Qahtani, a high-school graduate from southern Saudi Arabia, is thirty-years-old and has a son named Mohammad. Al-Qahtani is wanted by Saudi authorities on terror-related security charges. Six Al-Qaeda detainees provided this information to Yemeni security forces after they were arrested in July.

The sources said Al-Qahtani is responsible for the financing of several terrorist operations targeting Yemeni facilities as well as major sectors, including the attack on Spanish tourists in mid-July.

The sources said that Al-Qahtani has not taken part in the operation but that he was taking refuge, along with two other members of the network, in a mountain shelter adjacent to the Obaidah tribe area close to the Yemeni border with Saudi Arabia.

In a message titled “Come to Yemen” posted in March on Al-Qaeda.

Web sites, Naif Al-Qahtani called on Al-Qaeda agents present in Saudi Arabia to move to Yemen and that he would worry about financing their move.

The current regime in Yemen tries to get closer to the Gulf States via imitating the negative aspects of those regimes in terms of bequeathing power to the sons and distributing wealth and resources to particular families and groups, but at the same time depriving the absolute majority of Yemeni citizens of benefiting from the natural resources in their homeland. These imitators don’t understand that the ruling dynasties in the Gulf did not once bear any malice against their peoples. Instead, they expend hard efforts for the sake of their peoples’ happiness and prosperity.
