Taliban training monkeys for Jihad?
Jul 15, 2010
NEW YORK: The US-led forces fighting the Taliban fighters in Afghanistan might soon encounter 'gun-toting' monkeys, trained for 'jihad', if a rumour doing the rounds in the Chinese media is to be believed.
NATO officials and military experts have scoffed at the report originating in the Chinese media, which says that the Taliban are training monkeys to fight the US-led military.
The New York Post cited the state-run People's Daily as saying that the Taliban is "training monkeys to use weapons to attack American troops".
"... the Taliban forces have tried any possible means and figured out a method to train monkeys as 'replacement killers' against American troops," Stars and Stripes quoted the Chinese daily as saying.
The militants were arming the primates with AK-47 rifles, machine guns and trench mortars in the Waziristan tribal region bordering Pakistan and Afghanistan, it claimed.
The monkeys soldiers are being turned into snipers at a secret Taliban training base and are in turn being rewarded with 'bananas and peanuts'.
"We have absolutely nothing that leads us to believe that this tale could be even remotely based in reality," said NATO spokesman Lt Col Todd Breasseale when asked to react on the report.
Christopher Coe, director of the Harlow Primate Laboratory at the University of Wisconsin, questioned the authenticity of the pictures that were carried with the report, showing a primate grinning next to a machine gun.
"To my eye at least, it is a baboon, which lives in Africa," Coe said.
"The more common monkey that lives in that part of the world is a rhesus monkey. They live in India and can also be found in China. But this photo is not of a rhesus monkey".
Coe said the noise of weapon fire would certainly scare most animals.
"While you could train a monkey to shoot a gun, I certainly wouldn't want to be anywhere in the neighbourhood after that. I rather doubt you could trust its aim," he said.

Taliban attacks kill 12 NATO soldiers in Afghanistan
Jul 15, 2010
KABUL: A string of bomb, rocket and gun attacks in southern Afghanistan killed 12 NATO troops in just two days, officials said Wednesday, throwing the spotlight on the spiralling cost of the war.
The brazen assaults included the killing of three British troops by a rogue Afghan soldier, an incident that has underscored concerns over efforts to build up the local army, a cornerstone of the US-led war strategy.
Of the 12 dead, four were British troops and eight American.
"We're in the toughest part of this fight," German army general Josef Blotz, a spokesman for NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), told reporters.
Four US soldiers were killed in a Taliban-style bombing and a fifth by small-arms fire in the volatile south on Wednesday, an ISAF spokeswoman said.
Late Tuesday, Taliban insurgents had set off a car bomb, then fired rockets and small arms into a police base in the southern province of Kandahar, killing three US soldiers and five Afghan civilians.
Afghan police backed by international forces fought back "and prevented insurgents from penetrating the compound perimeter," ISAF said.
Zalmai Ayoubi, a spokesman for the Kandahar government, told AFP the car bomb was set off by a suicide bomber, adding that several other insurgents attacked the base with rockets and machine-gun fire for more than 20 minutes.
In a statement monitored by the SITE intelligence service, the Taliban claimed that 43 NATO and Afghan soldiers were killed in a five-man suicide raid on a police compound in Kandahar Tuesday.
The Taliban, who have been known to exaggerate reports of battlefield success, made the claim in a communique quoting spokesman Muhammad Yusuf and posted on its website and jihadist forums.
Separately, the Afghan interior ministry said another nine civilians were killed in the neighbouring province of Helmand on Tuesday when the minivan they were travelling in hit a roadside bomb -- the Taliban's weapon of choice.
Insurgents had killed more than 160 Afghan civilians since June 1, Blotz said. At least 365 NATO soldiers have also died in the conflict so far this year, compared with 521 for all of 2009.
On Tuesday, a renegade soldier killed three members of a British Gurkha battalion on a base in Helmand, one of the most violent parts of the country.
A British major commanding the company was among the dead, killed as he slept in the base, London's Ministry of Defence said in a statement.
The Afghan soldier who carried out the attack is still on the run.
President Hamid Karzai and the Afghan army chief have vowed a full investigation into the shooting.
Britain, the main US ally in the war against the Taliban, said it would not alter its strategy in working with local forces, which is key in enabling them to take over security and allow for an eventual exit for US-led troops.
US General David Petraeus, who assumed command of NATO troops this month, said it was vital to ensure that the trust between Afghan and international forces "remains solid in order to defeat our common enemies".
Officials of NATO's Training Mission-Afghanistan -- costing more than 10 billion dollars, mostly from US coffers -- say they aimed to recruit and train 171,000 soldiers and 134,000 police officers.
Current figures are around 115,000 in the army and 104,000 in the police. Illiteracy, desertion and drug addiction are widespread problems.
There have been fears that as the war loses ground with the Western public, pressure to reach quotas will override quality.
Britain has around 10,000 soldiers in Afghanistan and Prime Minister David Cameron has signalled he would like to see combat troops withdraw within five years. A British marine was shot dead on Tuesday while on foot patrol.
The United States and NATO have 143,000 troops in Afghanistan, with the number due to rise to 150,000 in coming weeks as international forces step up their campaign against the Taliban.

Young Saudi men protest against ‘closed’ society
By RIMA AL-MUKHTAR
Jul 15, 2010
JEDDAH: Young Saudi men are complaining that there is nothing to do during the long vacations in the Kingdom.
The summer vacation has just started and will last for two months, including Ramadan. For those two months young men are likely to have nothing on their agenda that could be classed as fun.
“I used to look forward to summer vacations when I was little as I used to go out with my family and have lots of fun activities but I have outgrown them now,” said high school student Abdullah Madani.  “I no longer find playing at the arcades or even riding my bicycle in my backyard as fun now that I’m older. I want to be involved in something more masculine with my male friends.”
He added that any activities he does with his friends are often met with disapproval from people around him, even if they are harmless.
“We need a place to have fun, where we can spend hours not worrying about what families and fathers would think of us,” he added.
Malls in Saudi Arabia are perceived as for families only. Men usually cannot enter without the company of a woman, making it difficult for them to shop.
“I was once told by a religious policeman that shopping was perverted and I should be ashamed for asking them to be let in a mall,” said resident Jameel Saleh.
“He also told me to let my wife or mother do it for me because shopping is for women only and I should behave like a man.”
Security guards at shopping malls think it is unfair to bar men from going to shopping centers.
“I sometimes sneak in some men early in the morning so they can buy what they need from the shops because this is ridiculous,” said a security man at one of Jeddah’s shopping centers.
“Authorities say that men who go inside malls are troublemakers and that’s why they want to stop them from entering in the first place. But that’s the reason we are around, so we can stop trouble from happening. But these are the rules and I cannot do anything about them.”
According to another citizen, Omar Najjar, Saudi men need to have enough money to own their own beach house or private house so they can invite friends over, otherwise they are forced to roam the streets and do nothing.
“My friends and I hang out at coffee shops to play cards or play video games and even that costs a lot of money. By the end of summer I find myself paying around SR5,000 and I did not even have fun,” he said.
“Young men need something more, as our lives have turned into a daily routine that we spend inside the Kingdom. On vacations, it’s like we’re excited that school is over but then we realize that when we were in school we had something to keep us busy. During vacations we’re just bored.”
Parking lots are packed with men who hang out and chat, often annoying families.
“My friends and I tried a couple of times to just hang out by the beach and enjoy the view, getting a small carpet to sit on and play cards,” said high school student Mohammed Taher.
“But every time we go there a religious cop comes and asks us to leave, claiming that we are bothering the families around us. That’s why we then shifted to malls and public parking lots because there are not many families around. Even then they think we are annoying them.
“What do you expect us to do? Where do you want us to go? It’s like they are saying if guys are gathering together then they are up to no good.”
It appears sport is the only activity that Saudi men can enjoy without being bothered by families or policemen.
“All I do on my off days is go to the gym and play football with my friends. Other than that I have nothing to do. I just spend hours playing games and lifting weights so I can pass time and then go home to get some rest and do the exact same thing the next day,” said college student Ahmed Zaki.
“I tried jogging in a public place, but people started staring at me as if to say I had an ulterior motive for being there. I really did not want to flirt or bother the ladies who were walking around. I just wanted to enjoy the sun and jog outdoors for a change.”
Families need to invest in their children’s summer by encouraging them to take courses and attend seminars, according to Dr. Adnan Mufti, consultant psychiatrist and hospital director at the mental hospital in Jeddah.
“Not all young men are interested in investing themselves during the vacation, as they see it as free time and just want to have fun,” he said.
“Saudi society is judging young men according to a previous generation who were annoying people and young women on the street, but that has changed and today’s young men’s free time might lead to bigger problems.”

Faisal explains why he tried to bomb New York
Jul 15, 2010
A video broadcast on Arab satellite channel Al-Arabiya shows Pakistan-born terror suspect Faisal Shahzad explaining why he planned the car bomb attack in New York. The video was reportedly shot just a few days before the foiled attempt in New York's Times Square. The 40-minute martyrdom video was recorded by the Shazad himself.
"This attack on the United States will also be a revenge attack for all the mujahideen (fighters) and muhajereen (migrants) and those oppressed people or Muslims, for example, Baitullah Amir shaheed (martyr) as well as Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and all the Muslim Arabs who have been martyred I will take revenge on their behalf. Inshallah," Shahzad is seen saying in the video.
The video resembles those made by suicide bombers and shows Shahzad saying that he will carry out the bombing on behalf of Muslims and Arabs, who had died as martyrs. Shahzad also praised Pakistan Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud and Iraq-based al-Qaeda leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who was killed in 2006.

Eat more and pay less in Ramazan
15 Jul. 10
ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet on Wednesday approved a relief package of Rs 2.27 billion to reduce the prices of essential commodities during Ramazan at utility stores’ outlets to keep a check on artificial price-hike, a common practice witnessed during the holy month.
Chairing the meeting, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani said the Utility Stores Corporation should play a proactive role in providing essential food items to the poor at affordable prices during Ramazan, particularly flour, ghee, sugar, pulses, grams and rice.
The cabinet also constituted a committee comprising the ministers of commerce, food and agriculture, industries and production and finance to review the situation and ensure the package’s implementation and availability of essential items at affordable prices.
Gilani directed the cabinet committee to discuss appropriate utilisation of the surplus wheat stock with the Trading Corporation of Pakistan and others and maintain the demand-and-supply position of sugar in the country to avoid shortage of any essential item during Ramazan.

Pak’s selective anti-terror steps won’t do: Krishna
Priyanka Tikoo | Islamabad
India told Pakistan on Wednesday that ‘selective efforts’ should not be used to deal with terrorism and termed as “untenable’ any attempt to make a distinction between state and non-state actors involved in terror.
Ahead of his meeting with his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mahmood Qureshi, External Affairs Minister SM Krishna said the trial here of seven accused in the Mumbai attacks case, including LeT’s operations chief Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, was moving at a slow pace and India would like to see its expeditious and successful conclusion.
He told PTI in an interview that Pakistan’s contention of making a distinction between state and non-state actors regarding terrorism was ‘untenable’ as “it is common knowledge that terrorist groups and individuals have been provided sanctuaries and safe havens” in this country.

Christian chaplain and Jew Rabbi to attend Muslim convention
15 Jul. 10
New Age Islam News Bureau
Chicago: In the annual conference of the Islamic Society of North America, a Christian chaplain, a rabbi and a Muslim aalim proved that interfaith dialogue was more fruitful than religious discussion and gave birth to peaceful society based on common values. Speaking on the topic ‘Promotion of compassionate communities through interfaith participation’ , the religious leaders discussed how people belonging to different religions could resolve their differences that weaken communities. Director of the office for Interfaith and Community Alliance of Islamic Society of North America Dr Syed M Sayeed said that the American Muslims could become achievers only by becoming socially active and having dialogue with people of other religions on common grounds.  The idea of strengthening the Muslim community has been derived from pluralistic democracy. We derive strength from the people of other religions who have been carrying on this struggle for centuries. He said he was especially grateful to Allah who provided this unique opportunity to establish fraternity and unity with the people of Abrahamic religions. The General Secretary of the National Council of the Churches of America, Michael Chinamon spoke on the strategy to cultivate the spirit of compassion, sympathy and humility in human beings. He said that we could feel the joys and sorrows of each other through interfaith participation. He said that realising and sharing the joys and sorrows of people was the basis on which we could strengthen our communities. The series of interfaith dialogue and participation had been going on since the last decade thanks to which I now believe that all the human beings are the creation of one omnipotent God, he said.

War crimes trial should follow due judicial process: UK minister
Jul 14, 2010
The British minister of state for international development, Alan Duncan, has observed that the trial of 1971 war criminals should be conducted acting on rule of law and applying due judicial process, and not by political means.
‘It must be a judicial process and not be a political one,’ he told a pre-departure press conference at Lake Shore Hotel.
However, the British minister appreciated the move for holding trial even after 40 years as the issue runs high in Bangladesh.
About the opposition BNP’s current abstention from parliament, Alan Duncan who met the prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, and the leader of the opposition, Khaleda Zia, said he was a strong believer in parliamentary politics.
Politics should be conducted through parliament and not through aggressive activities on street, he said.

WASHINGTON, July 14: Shahram Amiri, the Iranian nuclear expert who took refuge at the Pakistan Embassy earlier this week, headed home on Wednesday after popping up in several videos making self-contradictory statements.

Pak censor board says no to 'Tere Bin Laden'
Jul 14, 2010
ISLAMABAD: Indian film 'Tere Bin Laden', which stars singer-turned-actor Ali Zafar, has not been cleared for release by the Pakistani censor board over fears of terrorist attacks.
'Tere Bin Laden', scheduled for a worldwide release on July 16, marks the acting debut of Pakistani pop star Zafar in the Indian film industry.
Pakistan's Film Censor Board decided not to clear the film because it has al-Qaida leader Osama Bin Laden as a central character.
The Board announced its decision yesterday after watching the film. Censor Board Vice Chairman Masood Elahi told the media there is no justification for releasing the film in Pakistan under the "present circumstances".
Sources said the film was not cleared by the Censor Board due to fears of terrorist attacks.

Bangladesh battles male attitudes behind sexual crimes
By Cat Barton
15 Jul, 2010
DHAKA: When Aleya Akhter turned down a proposal of marriage, her enraged suitor turned up at her family’s Dhaka apartment, grabbed the Bangladeshi teenager, poured petrol on her and lit a match.
Aleya, 18, sustained burns to 70 per cent of her body and died after six days in intensive care, becoming one of dozens of teenage girls to be killed or have committed suicide in Bangladesh this year because of sexual harassment.
“A huge fire ball engulfed her and she was screaming, running around and trying to put out the fire, but she couldn’t — everything except her face was burned,” said Aleya’s aunt Rajia Begum, 40, who witnessed the attack.
“The man started asking her to marry him in April, she was dead by May 26.
She was scared of him — we all were. We didn’t go to the police at first as he warned us not to,” she added.
“When she told him she wouldn’t marry him, he said ‘I’ll make sure you don’t marry anyone else’”.

Jamaat-e-Islami’s senior assistant secretary general Qamaruzzaman and assistant secretary general Abdul Kader Mollah, arrested on Tuesday, were remanded in police custody for five days for interrogation in a case filed in 2008 in connection with carrying out massacre at Pallabi in Dhaka during the independence war in 1971.
The police on Tuesday afternoon arrested Qamaruzzaman and Kader at the entrance of the Supreme Court building when they, along with their counsels, were coming out of the court in separate vehicles after filing petitions for bail in two other cases — one for obstructing the police in discharging duties and another for carrying out massacre at Keraniganj in Dhaka during the independence war.
Criminal Investigation Department inspector Nurul Islam Siddique, also investigation officer of the case, produced the Jamaat leaders in the court of metropolitan magistrate Rokshana Akter Happy and sought them to be remanded in custody for 10 days. The court allowed them to be remanded for five days.

Hamas MP told: Leave Jerusalem or stay in jail
By MOHAMMED MAR’I
Jul 14, 2010
RAMALLAH: The Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday ordered the Hamas lawmaker Mohammad Abu Tir to leave the disputed city by the start of next week or remain in detention.
The court decided that the Jerusalem-based lawmaker will be released from detention and expelled if he deposits 50,000 Israeli shekel (about $12,000). In addition, Abu Tir will remain in detention if he does not deposit this sum along with a self-bail of 100,000 shekel (about $25,800) and another 100,000 shekel from a third party.
He will be required to sign a document committing not to return to “Israeli territory.”
Osama Al-Sa’di, Abu Tir’s lawyer, said in a press statement that the Hamas lawmaker “unequivocally rejected the decision since it means agreeing to deportation.”
Al-Sa’di added that the defense team will petition the Jerusalem District Court against the decision which he described as “political rather than legal.”
Abu-Tir said during a hearing early this month that “I am willing to do anything to remain in Jerusalem.”

Widows, divorcees call for understanding by landlords
By DIANA AL-JASSEM
Jul 15, 2010
JEDDAH: Many landlords are hesitant to rent apartments to Saudi women who are widowed or divorced saying such women are unable to pay their rents on time.
The landlords also ask these women to bring their mahrams or legal guardians along with them when renting them apartments. As a result, many divorced and widowed women are often unable to rent houses. These women, who already live a difficult life without husbands to depend on, complain about the way they are being treated by society. They are also calling for affordable housing.
Huda, an Egyptian woman whose Saudi husband divorced her after 20 years of marriage, said she was left without any money after her husband left her. “When my rent was due, I told my landlord that I couldn’t pay. He then phoned my ex-husband but to little avail. In the end, I was forced to vacate the apartment,” she said.
“Where can I get SR26,000 a year when I have no job or steady income? The landlord paid for the electricity and water, asked me to leave and waived the outstanding rent. I was then forced to move in with a friend,” she added.

Faisal’s intention recorded before Times Square incident
15 Jul, 2010
NEW YORK, July 14: Faisal Shahzad, the Pakistani-American man arrested for plotting a car bombing in New York’s Times Square, appeared in a video on Al Arabiya television on Wednesday in which he said he had planned to attack the United States.
The video was shown on all American television networks during the day but its credibility was still in doubt.
“This attack on the United States will be a revenge for all the mujahideen (holy warriors) ... and oppressed Muslims, including ... Abu Musab al Zarqawi,” the late leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq, said Faisal Shahzad.
American intelligence agencies said the recording, whose authenticity could not immediately be confirmed, was made in English and had an Arabic voice-over.
“I will carry this attack on their behalf, and I hope that it will please Muslims,” Shahzad said in the first video linking him to the abortive May 1 bomb plot and Al Qaeda.

Al Qaeda plotter held in UK on US warrant
15 Jul, 2010
LONDON, July 14: A Pakistani man alleged to have plotted a major Al Qaeda attack in Britain and wanted by US authorities over the New York subway bomb plot was ordered held in custody on Wednesday.
Abid Naseer, 24, was arrested on July 7 on a US extradition warrant on charges of providing support to a foreign terrorist organisation, conspiring to support a terror group and “conspiracy to use destructive force”.
He appeared via a video link at London’s City of Westminster court and was ordered held until another hearing in the case on August 11.
Naseer was among 12 people arrested last year in anti-terrorism raids across northern England.
All were released without charge, but authorities insisted they had thwarted a major Al Qaeda bomb plot in the northern city of Manchester.

Militant leader arrested in Bangladesh
15 Jul, 2010
DHAKA, July 14: Bangladeshi authorities have arrested the leader of a banned Islamic militant group as part of a crackdown in the South Asian nation, police said on Wednesday.
Jamayetul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), which wants secular Bangladesh to adopt sharia law, the Islamic legal code, was banned in 2005 for a series of suicide bombings that left 24 people dead.
Since coming to power in December 2008 elections, the secular Awami League government has launched a drive to weed out militancy that has led to a string of arrests of top JMB leaders.
Tuesday’s arrest of Anwarul Alam, alias Bhagne Shahid, comes just two months after he took over as head of the group following the May arrest of Maolana Saidur Rahman, who was then chief of the group.

US hands over Saddam aide Aziz to Iraq govt
15 Jul. 10
THE US this week handed over nearly 30 former members of Saddam Hussein’s inner circle, including the longtime international face of the regime, Tariq Aziz, officials said on Wednesday.
The announcement comes a day before the US is to transfer the authority of Camp Cropper, the last American- run detention facility in Iraq, to the Iraqi government.
The transfer marks a major step toward restoring full sovereignty to Iraq as the US military prepares to withdraw its forces from the country by the end of next year.
But it also raised concerns about the fate of Aziz and the other detainees at the hands of a government whose venom for the previous regime has not lessened in the seven years since Saddam was overthrown.

Suicide bomber hits Kandahar police
Mirwais Khan | Kandahar
A car bomb and gunfight outside the headquarters of an elite police force killed three US troops and five Afghan civilians in the southern city of Kandahar, officials said on Wednesday.
An Afghan police officer also died in the late Tuesday night attack on the compound, which houses the elite Afghan National Civil Order Police, a provincial spokesman said. The Taliban claimed responsibility.
A suicide attacker slammed a car bomb into the entrance of the compound, then insurgents opened fire with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades, a NATO statement said. A combined force of international troops and police kept the attackers from entering the compound and eventually fought them off, but three American troops died along with five civilian workers, NATO said.

26/11: US negative on Headley`s revelation
PTI | Washington
US has refused to make any remarks on the revelations made by Pakistani-American terrorist David Coleman Headley to Indian investigators, on ISI's involvement in the Mumbai terror attack.
"I don't see how I can comment from here. Anything I would say would either compromise intelligence information or an ongoing legal investigation," State Department spokesman, P J Crowley told reporters during his daily press briefing.
A four member team of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in June had done a week-long interrogation and questioning of Headley who pleaded guilty to conspiring in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks that killed 166 persons.
The NIA team headed by investigator Loknath Behera was granted access to Headley, at the request of the Indian Government, when the Federal Bureau of Investigation found that the Pakistani-American LeT operative Headley was involved in planning the Mumbai terror attack.

India Pak set to take peace process forward
IANS | Islamabad
Their ties having hit a new low after the Mumbai terror attack, the foreign ministers of India and Pakistan are set Thursday to open talks aimed at bridging their visible trust deficit.
External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna, who arrived here Wednesday on a three-day visit, and his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mahmood Qureshi are to meet with their delegations in the foreign ministry office and later address the media.
It will be the most significant bilateral interaction since the prime ministers of both countries decided in Bhutan in April to normalise a relationship that was hit badly after Pakistani terrorists ravaged Mumbai in November 2008.
But despite the vocal commitment to shake hands and make a new beginning, serious differences persist between the two nuclear rivals of South Asia.

Terrorist held in Secunderabad
Marri Ramu
HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh police on Wednesday arrested terror operative Viqaruddin Ahmed, who was on the run for more than two years after masterminding the killing of a home guard and a constable in the city.
On information that he was moving around in disguise, the police nabbed him when he came to a roadside shop to buy vegetables at Padmaraonagar in Secunderabad.
The police were on the lookout for Viqaruddin ever since he went underground immediately after the Mecca Masjid blast here in May 2007. He narrowly avoided arrest on December 3, 2008, after firing at two policemen. He is also believed to be behind the fatal attacks on policemen at Falaknuma on May 18, 2009 and May 14, 2010.
The Counter Intelligence Cell also detained his brother, Sulaiman, and two others after raiding a single-room tenement they had taken on rent at Shabajiguda of Padmaraonagar.
Among the detained was a homeopathy doctor, Mohammed Haneef, of Musheerabad, who sheltered Viqaruddin. Based on Viqaruddin's confession, two youths were picked up from Miryalaguda in Nalgonda district, 140 km from here. They are being questioned.
Police records show that Viqaruddin, who lives in Malakpet, was initially associated with the Darsgah Jihad-O-Shahadat, a religious fundamentalist organisation operating from the Old City.

Time for Pak to act on 26/11 proof: Krishna
Rajeev Deshpande
Jul 15, 2010
ISLAMABAD: India set a business-like note for the meeting of Indian and Pakistani foreign ministers on Thursday by outlining terrorism as the "core issue" and saying "the time had come" for Pakistan to act on "overwhelming evidence" presented to it over the role of Pak-based terror outfits in the Mumbai 26/11 attacks.
Foreign minister S M Krishna made his initial comments on expecting a feedback over Lashkar terrorist David Coleman Headley's revelations within minutes of reaching here. But he chose to follow this up with another interaction with Indian media, stressing that India had provided "overwhelming" and "irrefutable" evidence to Pakistan on the involvement in the 26/11 attacks.
He also responded to a question on LeT chief Hafiz Saeed, saying the Lashkar amir had been "consistently making statements which provoke people of Pakistan against India. Such tirades against India will certainly not help smoothen relations."
He underlined that India's position on terrorism reflected its desire for a stable and prosperous Pakistan which would, in turn, allow India to pursue its peaceful and developmental agenda.

EU tells Iran ready to resume talks on nuclear dispute
Jul 14, 2010
BRUSSELS: EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton has told Iran she was ready to resume nuclear talks and suggested that the two sides pick a time and date to meet, according to a letter released on Wednesday.
"I am glad to hear that you would be prepared to restart dialogue," Ashton wrote in a letter to Iran's chief nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili, dated July 8.
Ashton, who represents six world powers in the negotiations, said "issues relating to the Iranian nuclear programme must be the focus of our talks, though other subjects ... could also be raised."
She suggested that the two sides "should discuss the time and venue for our meeting."
Ashton's spokesman said the European Union's high representative hopes the talks can restart "as soon as possible, potentially in the autumn."
The EU's chief diplomat had written to Jalili in mid-June to request a resumption of negotiations with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany after the UN imposed new sanctions on Iran.
The Iranian official wrote back that Tehran was ready to resume talks from September 1 should a number of conditions be met.
Jalili said the six - the United States, China, Russia, Britain, France and Germany - must answer whether the talks are aimed at "engagement and cooperation or continued confrontation and hostility towards Iranians."

No differences between David Petraeus and Hamid Karzai: Pentagon
Jul 15, 2010
WASHINGTON: The Pentagon has strongly denied reports that there are differences between General David Petraeus, USA's new commander in Afghanistan and Afghan President Hamid Karzai, on the war against terror in the country.
On his job for less than a fortnight now, Gen Petraeus has been meeting Karzai on a daily basis and discussing with the latter on various aspects of the war against terror and how to win the battle against the terrorists in the country, a Pentagon spokesman told reporters.
"I think he (Petraeus) has met with President Karzai every single day of his new command, and I think even before that. So they've been meeting daily. And clearly one of the issues that they've been discussing at great length over the course of those conversations has been this issue of local community policing," Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell said.
"Contrary to some of the reporting I've seen, which has suggested at least in some of the stories that this discussion has caused some sort of tension or rift between them, that is not the case. I think these have been very fruitful and productive and valuable conversations for all involved," he said.

US may label Pak's Haqqani network as terrorist outfit
Chidanand Rajghatta
Jul 15, 2010
Supporters of Sunni Tehreek rally against suicide bombings in Islamabad.
WASHINGTON: The United States is running out of patience over Pakistan's dubious effort in staunching terrorism including its tacit support to militant groups.
Under pressure from key lawmakers and top military commanders, the Obama administration is now considering putting the Haqqani group and the Taliban's Quetta Shura, both Islamabad's proxies, on the terror list.
Such a move would implicitly nail Pakistan as a state sponsor of terror, since Islamabad has been using both groups to advance its so-called strategic depth policy in the region as a hedge against India by having them attack Indian and western presence in Afghanistan. Also on the US radar is the Pakistani Taliban, consisting of various state sponsored jihadi outfits, which have now selectively turned against Islamabad.

Arab TV airs video of Times Square bombing suspect
Jul 14, 2010
CAIRO: The Al-Arabiya TV station says it has video of the failed Times Square car bomb suspect meeting with Pakistani Taliban leaders along the Afghan border.
Al-Arabiya broadcast excerpts showing Faisal Shahzad saying he planned a ``revenge attack'' against the U.S. that he hoped would touch the hearts of Muslims.
Shahzad appears in the clips sitting on the ground in a black turban and military fatigues, with a gun next to him. He reads from the Quran.
The station also says Shahzad appears in part of the 40-minute video that it did not broadcast with a prominent Pakistan Taliban leader in the tribal regions along the Afghan border.
In June, Shahzad pleaded guilty to carrying out the failed May 1 bombing in Times Square.

Libyan ship with aid for Gaza reaches Egypt port
Jul 15, 2010
EL-ARISH, EGYPT: A Libyan aid ship blocked by Israeli missile ships from steaming to Gaza reached an Egyptian port Wednesday, bringing an end to the latest challenge to Israel's naval embargo of the Palestinian territory.
The director of the Egyptian port of el-Arish, Gamal Abdel Maqsoud, said the Libyan boat radioed Wednesday evening asking permission to dock there. He said the ship, the Moldovan-flagged Amalthea, was 15 miles (24 kilometers) off the Egyptian coast.
The ship reached the waiting area Wednesday evening, but has yet to dock because the captain is seeking clearance from the shipment's organizers, Abdel Maqsoud said.
It appeared likely the cargo would be unloaded Thursday. Egypt's foreign minister, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, told reporters that Cairo has agreed to let the Amalthea through, and that as soon as the boat docks, its cargo will be unloaded and handed over to the Red Crescent to deliver to Gaza.

There should be no 'selective efforts' against terror: India
Jul 15, 2010
ISLAMABAD: India told Pakistan on Wednesday that "selective efforts" should not be used to deal with terrorism and termed as "untenable" any attempt to make a distinction between state and non-state actors involved in terror.
Ahead of his meeting with his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mahmood Qureshi, external affairs minister S M Krishna said the trial here of seven accused in the Mumbai attacks case, including LeT's operations chief Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, was moving at a slow pace and India would like to see its expeditious and successful conclusion.
He told PTI in an interview that Pakistan's contention of making a distinction between state and non-state actors regarding terrorism was "untenable" as "it is common knowledge that terrorist groups and individuals have been provided sanctuaries and safe havens" in this country.
"Pakistan must realise that India harbours no ill-will against it and the cancer of terrorism needs to be rooted out completely," Krishna said.
"There can be no selective efforts against this scourge. There is a clear and present danger from terrorist groups that needs to be appreciated and acted upon decisively," he underlined.
