Similar Protests, Different Outcomes

By Arshad Alam, New Age Islam

28 January 2021

While comparing the anti-CAA and the ongoing farmers’ protests, we can see certain similarities in terms of their content, aims and methods. But while the anti-CAA protests were initially ignored by the government and at places finally broken up by armed mobs, the farmers’ protest seemingly has all the ears of the government. The government has not just conducted multiple meetings with the farmers but has also made the offer of suspending the contentious farm laws for a year and a half. More recently, it even allowed them to enter the capital to register their protest. What explains the difference in government’s approach in handling these two protests and is this approach partly responsible for the different outcomes of these protests?

Both the anti-CAA and the farmers’ protests have their roots in disenchantment with government policies. While the anti-CAA protests were primarily directed at recalling the discriminatory citizenship laws; the farmers’ protests are about scrapping three laws which they claim will make them vulnerable to the manipulations of predatory capital. Secondly, in terms of demographic composition, women and elderly are part of both the movements. The anti-CAA protests witnessed high participation of women since the very beginning. In the farmers’ movement, the participation of women and the elderly have been noticed by the lordships of the Supreme Court, who in in their divine wisdom, asked them to return to their homes. Such empathy was altogether lacking when it came to addressing the concerns of women and the elderly participating in the anti-CAA movement. Thirdly, in terms of tactics, both the protests occupied and blocked roads coming into Delhi as well as inside the city. The farmers today are squatting at multiple sites near Delhi’s border which have led to the closure of one side of the carriage way. The anti-CAA protest of Shaheen Bagh similarly blocked the road coming into Delhi. There were similar sit-ins across the country and appeals were made to block highways to pressurise the government to listen to their demands. Those making such appeals were overnight made into criminals and are today behind bars but the ongoing blocking of highways by farmers has not led to such an alarm.

Over the past many years, speaking against the government has been automatically dubbed as anti-national. Amplified by plaint and ideologically biased media, the power of the government to declare anyone anti-national has become phenomenal. The whole anti-CAA protests were given a bad name by linking it to unproven foreign funds. The government and the media constantly hammered the point that Islamists, had taken over the movement, whose express purpose was to give vent to separatist tendencies. In the ongoing farmers’ movement, similar attempts were made to disparage the protesters by calling them Khalistanis. However, while in the former case, the accusations never ceased, in the latter, this kind of targeting was entirely suspended after some time. Even the premeditated government attacks on these two protests were different. In one case, it was relentless; in the other, the government showed much restraint after realising that such targeting could backfire.

One reason which is being given for the apparent success of the farmers’ movement is that it is inclusive in nature whereas the anti-CAA movement was exclusive. The term ‘farmer’, is it is being argued, in itself is an inclusive secular category which has the potential to attract different religious communities and weld them into a formidable solidarity. Since the ant-CAA movement was primarily driven by the concerns of one community (Muslims), it could never garner such mass support and hence could not succeed in bringing the government to the negotiating table. Nothing could be more facile than this argument.

No doubt, the appeal of the ongoing farmers’ movement is universalistic but to say that the anti-CAA protests were any less is not true. The latter, right from the very start was speaking in terms of constitutional rights and not specifically in terms of Muslim rights. It was precisely because of the deployment of such political grammar that the protest was able to attract a range of ideological positions. This is not to belittle the fact that the ant-CAA movement was started and nurtured primarily by Muslims; they were certainly the backbone of the movement. However, it is also true that it was able to attract a lot of solidarity from other sections of society, especially students. Despite its projected universalism, one cannot deny the fact that the farmers’ movement was initiated by the Sikh community and that later on other sections of society joined the movement. The hoisting of the Sikh flag on the petard of Red Fort only goes on to show the religious motivation of some of the Sikh participants. Not giving due credit to Sikhs as the master movers of the movement is certainly doing injustice to their valour, commitment and sacrifice.

And it is this difference in religious nucleus of these two protests which perhaps explains the different attitude of the government. The events of yesterday make it amply clear that when it comes to dealing with Muslims, the government adopts a very different yardstick. The praise being showered on Delhi police for their extraordinary patience is entirely misplaced. It was the same police force which was aiming for the chest of Muslim youth; it was the same police force which was criminally forcing them to sing Vande Mataram, not very long ago. But yesterday, despite the fact that the police were beaten, abused and at some places had to flee for their lives, they did not fire a single bullet or even attempted to forcefully disperse the protestors. Such ‘exemplary’ behaviour from Delhi police is not possible without express instruction from their political masters. The difference in the way police reacted in both the situations is thus not a matter of policing, but is rather a matter of their complete subservience to the political class. The contrast is very frightening indeed.

Why is it that it is easy for the government to ‘deal’ with Muslims but not with Sikhs? Partly the answer is political. For long the Hindu right’s stated position has been that the Sikhs are an inalienable part of the Hindu society. Being an Indic religion, Sikhism’s Punya Bhoomi (holy land) and Pitra Bhoomi (father land) are both in India. The same cannot be said about Muslims and consequently they have been looked upon with suspicion for having extra territorial loyalties. This division between Indic and non-Indic religions runs so deep that it has almost become common sense with even liberal social sciences adopting this framework to understand Indian society and culture. The present government, having deep roots within such a worldview, thus could not frame the Sikh led farmer protests as anti-national the way it could easily do with Muslim led anti-CAA protests. Moreover, over many decades, the Hindu right has been peddling a discourse that Sikhism arose as a movement to protect Hinduism from the zealotry of Islam. It would be too hard for them to turn around now and call Sikhs anti-national. Certainly, a little compromise is nothing in the interest of maintaining the larger cause of Hindu fraternity.

There is another important reason why the government was accommodative to the farmers’ demands. And this has to do with the relatively empowered position of Sikhs in the country. They are important part of the Indian economy, are well educated and therefore better represented in the police as well as in the military. Any violent action on them would have far reaching consequences which any government can ill afford. Moreover, over the years, and especially after the anti-Sikh pogrom of 1984, they have become an important diaspora in North America, thus having the potential to influence international opinion. In contrast, Muslims mainly provide unorganised labour for the Indian economy, and because of their relative lack of education are hardly represented in the various institutions of the state. Moreover, the current government is not dependent on their votes so Muslims do not even have electoral leverage. It is far easier to otherise Muslims as compared to other communities; even a violent attack on them will not have much repercussion on the larger Indian society.

The reason why the government treated the Sikh led farmers’ movement with the respect that it deserved has much to do with the position of Sikhism within the Hindu pantheon and the political economy of the community. Granted that the farmer protest had an inclusive character and spoke the language of universalism, but it does not sufficiently explain its apparent success. The outcome of any movement is not just contingent on the strategies that it adopts but also depends on how it is perceived by others and how the government responds to it. Given that the present government aligns its response on the religious identity of the protestors, there is very little chance for any Muslim led protest to be heard, far less succeed.

Quran Does Not Support Destruction Of Places Of Worship Or Violence Against Non-Muslims

By S. Arshad, New Age Islam

27 January 2021

During the initial period of Islam, Muslims of Makkah had faced resistance and opposition to their faith. As their opposition intensified with the growing popularity of Islam among Makkans, the people of Makka started harassing, torturing and persecuting the Muslims who were in minority and were weak.

During the Madinan period, Muslims grew in strength and formed their own government led by the prophet of Islam pbuh. The polytheists and Jews of Makkah and suburbs united against the Muslims and fought battles against them. Muslims fought a number of battles against the polytheists and Jews.

Even after the victory of Makkah, the confrontation between the Muslims and the polytheists-Jews continued. The nature of this confrontation was more political than religious. Since the spread of Islam ran parallel to the growth of the Islamic state, Muslims of the later ages got the impression that use of force for propagation of Islam is supported by the Quran and hadith. This is the belief which is held and practised by the extremist ulema and organisations of the modern age. But the teachings of the Quran and precedents in Hadith negate this belief.

The Quran and Hadith support the use of force as a last resort and in self defence and it is mostly in political situation when an enemy country threatens the security and sovereignty of an Islamic country. But when it comes to the propagation of the message of Islam, the Quran and Hadith preach non-violence and peace. Quran does not support violence in the name of propagation of Islam or killing the non-Muslims and destroying their places of worship or shrines. Attacks on churches, temples, synagogues or monastries or other religious sites are not supported by the Quran nor does the Quran enjoin on the Muslims to use force to convert non-Muslims to Islam. The Quran famously says:

"There is no compulsion in matters of faith"(Al Baqarah:256)

The Quran advises Muslims only to convey its message to the non-Muslims peacefully and then leave the matter to them. If they turn hostile, the Muslims are advised to turn away from them. The Quran says:

"Show forgiveness, enjoin equity and avoid the ignorant."(AlA'raf: 199)

"Had Allah willed they would not have been polytheists. We have not appointed you their keeper nor are you their maintainer."(Al An'am:107)

"Those mindful of Allah will not be accountable for those who ridicule it whatsoever ---- their duty is to advise, so perhaps the ridiculers will abstain."(Al An'am:69)

The above qouted verses underline the basic principle of the propagation of Deen but unfortunately the Muslims have formed a wrong idea of the propagation of Deen in the light of the political confrontation between the Muslims and non-Muslims of the initial period and that is the use of force in the propagation of Deen.

The Quran whenever advises Muslims to spread the message of Islam, it asks Muslims to practice perseverance, patience and tolerance and avoid confrontation.

The Quran is also against destroying the places of worship of other religious communities because in those places the name of Allah is chanted. And every community has its own way of worship of God. Therefore, the Quran says that when people resort to violence and try to demolish the places of worship, God repels them and protects those places of worship. The verse is as follows:

"For had there not been for Allah's repelling some people by others, certainly there would have been pulled down cloisters and churches and synagogues and mosques in which Allah's name is much remembered."(Al Hajj:40)

To God every place where His name is remembered and chanted is dear and so He protects it from those who want to destroy it.

There is a Hadith that strengthens the belief that Islam does not support violence in the name of propagation of Deen.

Hadhrat Abu Hurairah narrated that Fudhail bin Amro ( Headman of Douss tribe) came to the Prophet pbuh and said, "O Prophet of God pbuh! The people of Douss disobeyed Allah and refused to be Muslims. Please curse them." People thought that the prophet pbuh would now curse them. But he pbuh prayed, "O God! Guide the people of Douss on the right path and bring them to me."(Sahih Bukhari: Kitab ud Daawaat: 794)

This shows that the holy Prophet pbuh did not even curse the polytheists of the Douss tribe, leave aside fighting them in order to convert them to Islam.

The use of violence against the followers of other religions by extremist groups of Muslims and the destruction of their religious sites is, therefore, against the teachings of the Quran and Hadith.

Saudi Arabia Sponsored UN-Resolution Against Sectarian Hatred And For Protection Of Religious Sites: Turkey And Qatar Conspicuous By Absence

 New Age Islam Special Correspondent

23 January 2021

The United Nations recently adopted a resolution titled "Promoting a culture of peace and dialogue to safeguard religious sites". The resolution was presented by Saudi Arabia on behalf of a number of Muslim majority countries. The resolution aims to end sectarian hatred and violence and destruction of religious sites resulting from it. The resolution called for "strengthened international efforts to foster a global dialogue on the promotion of culture of tolerance and peace at all levels based on respect for human rights and for the diversity of religions and beliefs and such acts of violence against persons on the basis of their religion and belief and such acts directed against their places of worship as well as all attacks on and in religious places, sites and shrines that are in violation of international law."

The resolution also denounced any move to damage, demolish or convert any religious site.

It also invited the Secretary-General of the UN to hold a global conference on the issue.

The resolution has been adopted at a time when sectarian hatred is at its peak in Muslim societies and most of the time it results in violence and attacks on religious sites and shrines belonging to different sects and religions. Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Mozambique, Niger and Middle East countries are centres of sectarian and religious hatred and violence.

During the Syrian civil war, the ISIS and its affiliates attacked religious sites and shrines belonging to Christians and mausoleums and graves of prophets and Sufis were destroyed by them. In Pakistan, Mazars and churches and temples are attacked on a regular basis. In Nigeria, Mozambique and Niger, the ISIS- affiliated terrorist organisations like Al Shabab and Boko Haram regularly kill Christians and Sufi-minded Muslims and destroy churches and desecrate mosques belonging to Sufi sect, calling their belief as "degenerate Islam".

Therefore, presenting a resolution against sectarian and terrorist violence against minorities by Saudi Arabia and adopting it by the UN is an important step but it also raises some questions on the sincerity and motive of the signatory countries on the issue.

The terrorist organisations involved in such violence against religious sects and sites are Al Qaida, ISIS, Boko Haram, Taliban, Sipah-e-Sahaba etc and the countries that have signed on the draft resolution are Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Central African Republic, Djibouti, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Mauritania, Morocco, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Philippines, Sudan, UAE, Venezuela, Yemen and State of Palestine.

The terrorist organisations active in these Muslim majority countries preach and practice a theology based on a radical interpretation of the Quran propagated and circulated by the Ulema of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Egypt. Most of the imams of African and Asian countries are trained in Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Egypt and imbibe a conservative approach to Islam from them. Saudi Arabia also funds construction of mosques in African and Western countries which become centres of Wahhabi ideology. The Al Qaida, Boko Haram, Al Nusrah, Taliban and the ISIS subscribe to the Wahhabi ideology propagated and promoted by Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Qatar.

Reports and researches on the spread of radical Islamism in America and Europe reveal that the growth of Muslim Brotherhood of Egypt and the ISIS in these countries is due to the spread of the extremist Islamic ideology by the ulema affiliated to the Muslim Brotherhood.

One striking feature of this resolution is that Turkey and Qatar have not signed the resolution. The reason is not far to seek. These two countries have showed support to the ISIS during the Syrian civil war and various Congressional reports have showed that Qatar has been a source of fundraising for the ISIS, Taliban and Muslim Brotherhood and other terrorist organisations.

Turkey has provided shelter and support to the ISIS. Turkey has not signed the resolution also because the resolution condemns the act of damaging and converting religious sites. Turkey has recently converted two churches in mosques.

However, Saudi Arabia is also not a saint. It, together with Qatar, had provided funding and support to the ISIS during the Syrian civil war. The Saudi Minister Bandar bin Sultan had brazenly acknowledged before the Russian President Putin that the terrorist organisations active in Iraq and Syria were controlled by Saudi Arabia.

If Muslim countries, particularly the Saudi Arabia really want an end to terrorism and to the sectarian violence, they don't need a resolution adopted by the UN. They can do it by taking long term steps of removing radical interpretations of the Quran and hadith from their religious texts and from their education system. They should first root out terrorist organisations from their lands and declare them un-Islamic. They should also stop using these terrorist organisations as pressure groups and tools of "strategic depth" as was done by Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey in recent years. Saudi Arabia used the ISIS during the Syrian War; Pakistan used the Taliban in Afghanistan and Turkey used the ISIS in Azerbaijan and Kurdistan.

The resolution seems more of a diplomatic exercise of Saudi Arabia against Turkey and Qatar. The absence of these two countries from the resolution strengthens this belief. If Saudi Arabia and twenty other signatory countries really want to root out sectarianism and terrorism from their lands, they should together form a group and start ideological and military campaign against these terrorist organisations. The UN and other European countries will always be there to support them. But they should take the initiative first.

The Subservient Muslim World -A Laughingstock: Is There Any Hope For A Redemption? Yes!

By T.O. Shanavas, New Age Islam

25 January 2021

An electronically transmitted video from an Indian madrasas propelled me to compose my thoughts here. The spokesperson in this video pleads for the Islamic education while belittling the parents for expending resources for college education outside Madrasas. His definition of Islamic education includes only the 6 article of faith, 5 pillars of Islam, and its related topic.

Such a definition of Islamic knowledge is not limited to teachers of Madrasas.. Unfortunately, the same disposition exists even among highly educated American Muslims. These American Muslims, many with doctorate degrees in different fields of expertise, have a truth tell in the mosques and another in their external professional lives. The old Latin expressions, “contra evidential credo (I believe despite the evidence)” and “credo quia evidentia ( I believe because of evidence)” most accurately differentiate their dual lives.

Moreover, these scientifically educated Muslims play a pivotal role in making all mosques and Islamic centers into impervious fortresses against any fresh ideas including new approaches to the interpretations of the Qur’an. Under the watch of the educated Muslim class and totalitarian Muslim rulers globally, the religious body of ulama and fuqaha marginalized scientists and philosophers in society and led Muslims at large to a terrain of subordination beneath the feet of the scientifically advanced nations.

Despite the fact that there are so many Muslims in the world, in many places there is a lack of understanding about Muslim people and Islam Photo Courtesy ADL

------

The dialogue between God and Prophet Abraham in the verse 2:260 lays out an important article of faith that Muslims ignore, or the Islamic scholar decry and suppress. The verse reads: And when Abraham said, 'My Lord, show me how Thou wilt give life to the dead,' He said, 'Why, dost thou not believe?' 'Yes,' he said, 'but that my heart may be at rest.' Said He, 'Take four birds, and twist them to thee, then set a part of them on every hill, then summon them, and they will come to thee running. And do thou know that God is All-mighty, All-wise.'” This verse is revealed not to discredit or project Prophet Abraham as a weak and shaky believer, but as an important message to the Muslims. This verse grants Muslims the freedom to confront and/or cross-examine even the most knowledgeable and/or to demand evidence supporting an opinion. Here the prophet and the Kalil (friend) of God demands evidence to satisfy his rational mind. So, the verse demands critical thinking in all matters from Muslims.

Unfortunately, critical thinking Muslim children are told in mosques by Imams, and teachers that science is based on theories not on fact. Parents echo same language at home to  suppress inquisitiveness when children notice conflict between what is taught in mosques and schools. As these children grow up as adults they recreate and perpetuate a similar Muslim community as happens today, i.e., a Muslim community subservient to a shrewd scientifically advanced external world.

I hold the view that education in medicine, engineering, astronomy, and all basic sciences are also fundamental to Islamic education. Why?

1.   Quran 3:191: “Who remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and  give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], "Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire.”

The Quran (3:191) demands from Muslims to reflect on God’s creations and to make a dua:

“رَبَّنَا مَا خَلَقْتَ هَٰذَا بَاطِلًا سُبْحَانَكَ فَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ” (“Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire.”). God here warns Muslims of retribution  ( عَذَابَ النَّارِ  ) for ignoring His command.

2.  Quran 42:29: “And of His verses (  آيَاتِهِ ) is the creation of the heavens and earth and what He has dispersed throughout them of creatures. And He, for gathering them when He wills, is competent.”

Here in this revelation, God reveals that heavens and earth are verses ( آيَاتِهِ) for human to read, reflect, and benefit. In other words, the universe is a Divine Book with messages written in  material medium while the Quran is a Divine Book in human vernacular. So, a parallel reading of both Books is crucial to capture the true meaning of the revealed divine messages. The author of both Books is the one and the same, i.e., the Omniscient, and therefore the meaning of the messages cannot conflict. If we detect a conflict in the meanings between the Books, it is our faulty reading, not the fault of the Book, and so we are commanded to reread both Books carefully and repeatedly until the meaning of both Books complement each other as suggested in the verse 67:3.

“who created seven heavens one upon another. Thou seest not in the creation of the All-merciful any imperfection. Return thy gaze ( ۖ فَارْجِعِ الْبَصَر ); seest thou any flaw?”

All scientific knowledge is basically the unravelled mysteries of the created world. We humans, mostly non-Muslims, unravelled a little of the revealed knowledge, and codified into 3 disciplines—Physics, Chemistry, and Biology and its subclasses. For example,

Quran 29:20: “Say [Muhammad to your people]: "Travel through the earth and see how Allah did originate creation; so, will Allah produce a later creation: for Allah has power over all things.”

In the above verse, there are at least  3 messages for Muslims and humanity at large:

(a)      God gave us the potentialities and faculties to unravel and understand God’s process of creation. Otherwise, God would not have commanded us  “فَانْظُرُوا كَيْفَ  (see how I create.”

(b)      The verse commands,  سِيرُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ فَانْظُرُوا كَيْفَ (“Travel through the earth see how”). It signals that God has given His vicegerent (Khalifa) all the necessary tools in the earth to decode the Divine process of creation.

(c)      It is a God assigned chore for Muslims to explore and learn the process of creation because the verse asks Prophet(s) to قُلْ “Say” [Muhammad to your people] “Travel through the earth see how I create…” Unfortunately, contemporary Muslims with few exceptions ignore the assigned task.

While non-Muslim world ceaselessly probes the Divine process of creation refining their understanding of the physics, chemistry, and biology from the verses ( آيَاتِهِ) in the Book, the universe, we Muslims reject science claiming that scientific theories contradict our traditionally held meaning of the time-unbound Divine revelation.

Non-Muslim world resurrected a millennium old Muslim the theory of evolution of life and out of it they developed genetic engineering, cheaper food, created plants with better yield, medicines to cure the sick, and vaccine to prevent diseases. Out of the physics and chemistry of the Divine process of creation came the computers, drones, supersonic planes, bomb showering missile, atomic and other weapons.

Muslims claim to be the followers of Prophet Muhammad (s), “the mercy to mankind” (Qur’an 21:107), who instructed his true followers: “O people, spread peace, feed the hungry, and pray at night when people are sleeping, and you will enter Paradise in peace.” (Sunan Ibn Majah). Nevertheless, Muslims on daily basis mercilessly annihilate each other in Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Syria, Egypt, and other part of Muslim world using outdated weapons coming from non-Muslim world.  Muslims world groans and cries foul blaming others for their subordination under foreign powers.

Sorry Muslims, current state of Muslim life controlled by external powers is Muslims’ own creation or choice. We are in the current unenviable cubbyhole because of divine decree: “...Say, Are those who know equal to those who do not know...?" (Quran 39:19). Yes, most of Muslim population (36% illiterate) is least educated in the world, and they live in an echo chamber listening to Imams who are  illiterate in science or know science but ignore it to comply their words with outdated meaning of Divine Messages from earlier generations. Let me remind Muslim world, “...surely Allah does not change the condition of a people until they change their own condition...” (Qur’an 13:11).

If Muslims what to change their current subservient state, I suggest following suggestions:

1.       First and the foremost commitment needed from the Muslim World is establishment of peace within them :“The servants of the All-Merciful who walk humbly upon the earth—and when the ignorant taunt them, they reply, ‘Peace!’” (Qur’an 25:63); and “Spread peace…” (Sunan Ibn Majah)

2.       Return hostility with goodwill. “Not equal are the good deed and the evil deed. Repel with that which is fairer and behold, he between whom and thee there is enmity shall be as if he were a loyal friend.” (Qur’an 41:34)

3.       Erase current arrogant community mindset of Muslim supremacy.

4.       Accept the reality that no group of scholars is the absolute source of all knowledge. The figure here shows the growth of knowledge into subclasses and growing.

5.       Accept that it is possible for human cognitive distortions creeping into the meaning of divine messages if the interpreting religious scholars lack the cosmic knowledge from the Divine Book in material medium. To avoid such distortions God revealed in verse 42:38 “...who conduct their affairs with consultation among themselves..” (  وَأَمْرُهُمْ شُورَىٰ بَيْنَهُمْ”) asking us to deliberate all matters within the community at large and consult with those who are knowledgeable in their pertinent field (“...Say, Are those who know equal to those who do not know...?" (Quran 39:19). The prophet (s) accepted the existence of important knowledge outside his Arabian nation and urged his companions to travel away from home to acquire it (“Whoever travels a path in search of knowledge, Allah will make easy for him a path to Paradise…” Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2699).

6.       God’s knowledge of the objective reality (cosmos, nature, and society) is infinite and perfect, while human knowledge is finite and deficient. So, Muslims at large must accept the fact that the past scholarly interpretations of the Qur’an are from finite and deficient human beings. And it is contingent, subjective, and mutable. So, instead of hanging on it with blind faith, Muslims of every time-frame must take Islam forward approaching the Quran with a cognitive understanding of reality that is rooted in the most advanced discourse on nature, cosmos, and human society.

7.       Encourage critical thinking.

8.       Transform mosques and Islamic centres into centres of intellectual discourse where all ideas, propositions and theories are discussed and debated in civil manner.

9.       Transform madrasas into institutions where the religious and secular education are comingled and debated.

10.     Muslims must constantly remind themselves that God has given the rational faculty,  and the idling that divine gift would be a disgrace of and affront to God, the Almighty.

11.     Community must be reminded constantly that forgetfulness of the possession of rational faculty, and ritualism taking priority over critical enquiry arrest human worldly progress.

12.     Muslims must take fear out of their mind in hearing out the opposing point of view and ideas, and also in re-defining their world-picture.

13.     Reject dogmatization of salafi  traditionalists and their claim to be in possession of absolute knowledge about the Qur’an because such a claim presupposes that humans can be equal to God in His knowledge and so violates Allah’s oneness.

14.     Accept the Qur’an and the universe as the twin manifestations and messages from God as books—one written in human vernacular and other in material medium—to be read and interpreted not in isolation but in parallel to grasp true meaning.

15.     Muslim community must orient themselves that science basically is a tafsir (interpretation) of the Divine Book, the universe, and treat it with respect as we do to the Tafsir of the Qur’an.

16.     Do not misappropriate the knowledge from the two Divine Books to harm others and the natural world: “...do good as Allah has been good to you and seek not mischief in the land. Verily, Allah likes not the Mufsidun (those who commit great crimes and sins, oppressors, tyrants, mischief-makers, corrupts).” (The Qur’an 28:77)
