By Sumit Paul, New Age Islam 30 September 2024 "No Mirror Ever Became Iron Again; No Bread Ever Became Wheat; No Ripened Grape Ever Became Sour Fruit. Mature Yourself and Be Secure from A Change for The Worse. Become The Light. " Jalaluddin Rumi Rumi was born on September 30 ------ The profound words of Rumi remind us of the immutable nature of transformation. Just as no mirror can ever reverse its metallurgy, bread cannot revert to its original wheat form, and a ripened grape can never turn back into sour fruit, we too must embrace the irreversible growth and maturation of our own selves. Rumi urges us to mature ourselves, to evolve into our fullest potential, and in doing so, find security in our unwavering commitment to personal growth. By becoming the light – embodying wisdom and enlightenment – we shield ourselves from any possibility of regressing into a state of darkness or stagnation. Rumi's quote inspires us to continually expand our minds, nurture our souls, and embrace life's continual process of transformation. There's a famous Dutch adage, "Eenmaal Ontwaakt, Altijd Ontwaakt" (Once awakened, forever awakened). A truly awakened mind stays forever awakened and doesn't revert into its (earlier) state of mediocrity. "Khilta Gulaab Ghuncha Nahin Banta" (A blooming rose doesn't descend back into a rose). It's one of the last quotes of Rumi. Professor Reynold A Nicholson sent it to his student Muhammad Iqbal with his Persian note that once you're on the path of betterment, take rest only when you become the best. Don't look back during the journey of self-enlightenment. Rumi humbly realized the sublimation of his human existence towards the fag-end of his life when he was 66-yr-old (born on September 30, 1207- passed away on December 17, 1273). A life reached its acme, will search for a further peak and a new apogee. "Pahunch Uss Maqaam Pe / Palatna Jahan Se Tauheen Lage" (Reach that stage and status from where reverting seems infra-dig). It's like, once you're used to the very best, even the best will cease to appeal to you. Humans need to evolve all the time because ascension is life, descension is death. Going beyond all pettiness is a sign of evolution. Squabbling over religions, books, gods, nations, hell, heaven, territories and all that jazz is descension and decadence. Rumi's exalted philosophy is a canopy of universal wisdom. ---- A regular columnist for New Age Islam, Sumit Paul is a researcher in comparative religions, with special reference to Islam.
