By Sumit Paul, New Age Islam 7 March 2025 "Let me ask you a straight question. Do you believe in the Hereafter? If not, then you have been deluded by Satan and are playing the role of Satan’s votary to mislead others." An 'omniscient' reader in the forum Many Jewish thinkers have concluded that “Satan” is simply part of our own self. The “Yetzer Hara” or “evil inclination” is a key part of our lower self and not some external agent. It's our own self that leads us astray. The myth of Satan, Lucifer or a 'fallen angel' is predominantly integral to Judaism which percolated down to Christianity and Islam. In short, it's confined to three Semitic faiths, viz, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. One must understand these scriptural allegories and symbolism. Likewise Hell, Heaven, Hereafter, Thereafter and all that jazz are states of mind. To quote an Urdu poet, "Duniya Hi Mein Milte Hain Dozakh-O-Jannat/ Insaan Zara Sair Kare Ghar Se Nikal Kar" (Hell and heaven are very much in this world/ Stir out and look around). These are all religious metaphors and primitive emblems. All three Semitic faiths are strictly monotheistic. But the human mind is basically polytheistic. So, Semitic faiths concocted a figure and named it Satan. Psychologically as well as theologically, Satan is a 'dumping ground' for the naive followers of all three Semitic faiths. Gullible followers ascribe all their failures and misdeeds to poor Satan which, like god, doesn't exist. The rigid structure of Abrahamic faiths allows the myth of Satan to persist, perpetuate and pollute the minds of the credulous followers. This shows the collective immaturity of Abrahamic religions whereas in the Eastern consciousness, there's no concept of a Satan misleading and misguiding the followers of god. These deluded people must read Upanishads and study Vedanta. Your own self deceives you so often. Didn't Benjamin Franklin say in 'Poor Richard's Almanack,' "Who has deceived thee as often as thyself ?" That even 'educated' ones believe in this theological double Dutch, nay piffle, is really bizarre and worrisome. If you believe in the myth of Satan, isn't your position so helpless, tenuous and iffy because you're now sandwiched between god and Satan? Yak Na Shud, Do Shud ! If an individual's life is perpetually controlled and regulated by a god and lured by a Satan, where's his free will or volition? Where's his prudence? Isn't the Ashraful Makhlooqaat (the noblest of all creatures/the highest form of creation) a mere toy in the hands of god and Satan? Only those whose brains are religiously concussed, believe in all this baloney. Grow up and talk at least a semblance of sense. ----- A regular columnist for New Age Islam, Sumit Paul is a researcher in comparative religions, with special reference to Islam.
