Russian President Vladimir Putin On Pornography

By Sumit Paul, New Age Islam 24 December 2024 Recently, Russian President Vladimir Putin called for the creation of alternatives to pornographic content, suggesting that something more "interesting and passionate" should be developed to capture people’s attention. In an interview with Russia Today, Putin acknowledged the widespread global popularity of adult content, emphasising that this is not just an issue in Russia but one that affects the entire world. "Porn sites are visited all across the world. It is not just an issue for us, but for everyone," Putin remarked. While recognising that banning such content could be one approach, the Russian President argued that it is more important to provide alternatives that are more compelling than adult content. Pornography is addictive. It's interesting to observe that pornography is a serious issue even in the West where people are sexually quite liberal. Oliver Markus Malloy aptly said, “The average man thinks about sex every tits seconds.” Humans are voyeuristic. Pornography is a vulgar visual gratification that panders to our voyeuristic instincts and darkest fantasies. It (pornography) causes release of adrenaline from an area in the brain called the locus coeruleus, and this makes the heart race in those who view, or even anticipate, viewing pornography. The sexual pleasure of pornography may be partially caused by release of dopamine from the ventral tegmental area, and this stimulates the nucleus accumbens, one of the key pleasure centres of the brain. Sex, eroticism and pornography are primal human instincts and interests which militate against society's puritanical attitude towards sex. French raconteur Maupassant rightly observed that pornography was a response to prudery. To be honest, predilection for pornography will continue because nothing fascinates humans more than sex in all its rawness. You can't deny the fact that sex is nature's most benevolent and pleasurable gift to mankind. There are no substitutes for sex and death. A blanket ban on pornography will not serve any purpose because suppressed desire is a poison. There's nothing wrong with indulging in mild eroticism so long as it remains a notch below a perversion. Pornography is condemnable when it degenerates into a perversion. Parents should see to it that pornographic stuff on the internet and mobile must remain inaccessible to their children. An impressionable mind may get significantly affected by the adult content so easily available on the net and mobile. Government must ban and punish sites that offer child porn and rape sex. These sites promote abnormal sexual behaviour. Sex per se is never bad. Its unhealthy and unaesthetic depiction is not good and is always worth-frowning upon. Watch it and forget it. Mind you, all those who watch adult stuff are not perverts. Don't cast aspersions on those who watch porn. Condemn those who over-indulge in it and become addicts. Lastly, pornography is a parallel industry in many western countries. ---- A regular columnist for New Age Islam, Sumit Paul is a researcher in comparative religions, with special reference to Islam.
