| CIA Forged Iraq Intelligence, New Book by Ron Suskind Says | |

The Huffington Post | August 5, 2008 08:14 AM Ron Suskind, author of "The Price of Loyalty" and "The One Percent Doctrine," is out with a new book that includes CIA forgery of pre-war intelligence, the Politico reports: A new book by the author Ron Suskind claims that the White House ordered the CIA to forge a back-dated, handwritten letter from the head of Iraqi intelligence to Saddam Hussein. Suskind writes in "The Way of the World," to be published Tuesday, that the alleged forgery - adamantly denied by the White House - was designed to portray a false link between Hussein's regime and al Qaeda as a justification for the Iraq war. The author also claims that the Bush administration had information from a top Iraqi intelligence official "that there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq - intelligence they received in plenty of time to stop an invasion." George Tenet, director of the CIA at the time, responds: There was no such order from the White House to me nor, to the best of my knowledge, was anyone from CIA ever involved in any such effort. It is well established that, at my direction, CIA resisted efforts on the part of some in the Administration to paint a picture of Iraqi-Al Qa'ida connections that went beyond the evidence. The notion that I would suddenly reverse our stance and have created and planted false evidence that was contrary to our own beliefs is ridiculous. There are undoubtedly many other errors in the book - but these are the first ones of which I've been made aware. One would think a serious journalist would have, at a minimum, asked the supposed participants if what he was prepared to write was consistent with the facts. Mr. Suskind never contacted me on anything regarding this book. I suppose he had a story that fell into the category of: "too good to check." Asked about Tenet's reaction on NBC's "Today," Suskind said it's "part of George's memory issue." Watch: The White House issued its own denial: deputy press secretary Tony Fratto said, "The notion that the White House directed anyone to forge a letter from Habbush to Saddam Hussein is absurd." Suskind responded that the White House "is all but obligated to deny this." All of what follows is new, never reported in any way: By Ron Suskind Posted August 5, 2008 | 01:09 PM (EST) The Iraq Intelligence Chief, Tahir Jalil Habbush -- a man still carrying a $1 million reward for capture, the Jack of Diamonds in Bush's famous deck of wanted men -- has been America's secret source on Iraq. Starting in January of 2003, with Blair and Bush watching, his secret reports began to flow to officials on both sides of the Atlantic, saying that there were no WMD and that Hussein was acting so odd because of fear that the Iranians would find out he was a toothless tiger. The U.S. deep-sixed the intelligence report in February, "resettled" Habbush to a safe house in Jordan during the invasion and then paid him $5 million in what could only be considered hush money. In the fall of 2003, after the world learned there were no WMD -- as Habbush had foretold -- the White House ordered the CIA to carry out a deception. The mission: create a handwritten letter, dated July, 2001, from Habbush to Saddam saying that Atta trained in Iraq before the attacks and the Saddam was buying yellow cake for Niger with help from a "small team from the al Qaeda organization." The mission was carried out, the letter was created, popped up in Baghdad, and roiled the global newcycles in December, 2003 (conning even venerable journalists like Tom Brokaw). The mission is a statutory violation of the charter of the CIA, and amendments added in 1991, prohibiting the CIA from conducting disinformation campaigns on U.S. soil. So, here we go again: the administration is in full attack mode, calling me names, George Tenet is claiming he doesn't remember any such thing -- just like he couldn't remember "slam dunk" -- and reporters are scratching their heads. Everything in my book is on the record, with many sources. And so, we watch and wait.... If they wanted experience, they should've nominated Biden or Dodd (OK, maybe Richardson). But they--we--didn't. We nominated the guy who took everybody's breath away, who was (admittedly) great on TV and great in speeches, but comparatively short on record, and now we're seeing why that may have been a bad idea--although he may win anyway, and I hope he does. It seems abundantly clear to me that nobody--including the Democratic nominee--intends to hold this criminal administration criminally responsible for anything. Democratic representatives and senators have evidence dripping off their shoes and falling on their heads and shoulders every day, but they say there's not enough to charge anybody, it wouldn't be in the country's interest, blah blah blah. These people keep saying they're not going to impeach or prosecute because "the American people want us to be working on the real problems we have going forward," or whatever. Really? Why does one preclude the other? And where do they get the idea that the average Joe out here wouldn't absolutely LOVE to see some of these criminals--including Bush himself--held responsible? Do they really think we want to see them all walk away and go on to big-money careers as authors and lecturers and heroes of the right? How much would it do to restore our reputation in the world for other nations to see us hold these criminals accountable? What all this really means is, if you're highly-placed enough, you can engage in criminal activity that leads to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people, and you'll escape without a scratch. Yes, there is still intelligent life in the USA. I was really beginning to wonder. Perhaps Mr. Suskind could start a web cite for those of us who feel passionately that the Bushies and neocons should not go unpunished for the unnecessary death and destruction they have caused. We need to work on our elected officials, including Obama should he become president, if Bush is leaves office without being held accountable. A low apporval rating and historical disdain for his presidency is not enough for the damage he and his abetters have done to the US and to Iraq. They have abused power and broken laws. What does it say about our system of government if they are not penalized as any ordinary citizen would be? Have you been awake at all for the last two years? There WAS no nuclear weapons program in Iraq, it had been dismantled after the first Gulf War. It isn't just Habbush who said it. Read the Senate Select Intelligence Committee report from this June on Iraq intelligence. Iraq couldn't have developed a nuclear weapon by now because their program had been dismantled; there was NO nuclear weapons capability in Iraq. What is about the word "No" you don't understand? Every sentence in your post is a complete non-sequitur from the previous one. The problem is...you don't think. Invading Iraq was an aggressive war, an attack on a country that did not threaten us, and the same would be true of any U.S. (or Israeli) attack on Iran. They are war crimes, by definition. People like you who just blithely accept that this country (or any country) has the right to wage aggressive war are what is WRONG with this country. Your lack of information, your lack of reasoning ability, and your lack of any sense of the founding principles of this republic are ruining this country. The letter was not forged on US soil because it was written by Habbush in his safe house in JORDAN *not* the USA. And if Habbush wrote it then it can't be a forgery can it? Nevermind that it was written years after the fact, it was probably just a handwritten copy of the original one that Saddam successfully hid (along with the WMD) before the US liberation began. A bit like how someone re-typed that Air National Guard AWOL report on GW Bush because the original one had been 'lost'. Honestly everyone, just chill out. Well, as usual, the intellectually lazy corporate media slugs can't be bothered to pursue this story. Why is it that we only have two outlets -- HuffPost and Countdown with Keith Olbermann -- who explore anything of substance, in an in-depth fashion? All the other stories have been perfunctory -- often leading with "White House denies claims made in book" -- with no follow up. Is this corporate-media right wing bias? Or just the shallow superficiality of reporters who have decided that they have to dumb down their coverage for consumption by the uneducated masses?
